12/2/2015: The day MGoBoard jumped the shark

Submitted by FormAFarkingWall on

This board, once a bastion of wit and intelligence, has officially jumped the shark. There are still a slew of good, thoughtful posters but sadly their contributions get buried amongst the trash spewed by what has become the majority.

D.J. Durkin left for a promotion. Head coaching opportunities in P5 conferences do not come along every day, and he seized upon a valuable opportunity. He likely interviewed last week. If he hadn't, I'm guessing Maryland goes in a different direction. His opportunity required immediate action and I cannot fault him for that. If you have ever interviewed for a job you know two things. 1. You dont control the schedule. 2. You likely lied to your current employer as to why you were out, but still gave it your full effort when you went back to work.

He may take Partridge and/or others with him, offering them promotions from their current roles at Michigan. Offering promotions to staff he is familiar with is not slimy, it is standard practice for new head coaches.

Trashing a coach that led a strong defense with class is unbecoming, mlive-like, and very much the antithesis of what has made MGoBoard great. Make MGoBoard great again.

What other direction would Maryland have gone in?  Richt?  Yeah right.  Mullen?  Yeah right.  Maryland was interviewing candidates this week, he could've waited.  Interviewing for another job when you have your biggest test yet to come is weaksauce.

Actually, yes you do have control over when you meet with a prospective employer...PARTICULARLY WHEN THEY KNOW YOU ARE PREPPING FOR THE BIGGEST RIVALRY GAME OF THE SEASON..

Do you think Bo Schembechler or Woody Hayes...or Lloyd Carr's Defensive Coordinator would have ever interviewed with other schools during the OSU week?

If it is confirmed that Durkin did that, and Harbaugh OK'd it....well good for them...but it was a mistake any way you look at it.

Other schools need permission to contact an opposing coach about an opening, ESPECIALLY before the season is over.   All he had to do was say "Thank you for the consideration.  My squad is competing for the Big Ten Championship.  I would be happy to interview with you in 1 week."

Its not like he wouldnt ever have another job offer.  At that level of employment, he does have a say on when its going to be discussed.

Just because you differ in opinion with others, does not me that they are wrong and it does not mean that MgBlog jumped anything.   Peace.

The big thread that preceded the Durkin news was, 'In retrospect, do you still wish OSU had beaten MSU.' This place becomes a dry husk of its in-season self once the last game is played. Be thankful for the Durkin threads.

So anyone who doesn't agree with your opinion on Durkin has "jumped the shark" and is not a "good, thoughtful poster"?  Sure, there are people who have gone a bit overboard.  But I don't think it's unreasonable to feel slighted here.  He only stayed one year, and that's mildly annoying.  He interviewed during OSU week, which most of us find unacceptable.  He is now a competitor for both our staff, our recruits, and in actual on-field football games.

It's actually really simple. I don't like Dantonio. I don't like Meyer. I don't like Franklin. DJ Durkin is now the opponent, so I don't like him either.

For all we know, Harbaugh and Durkin may have had an understanding that Durkin would only be here for a year.  He just sort of fell into Harbaugh's lap.

The Jedd Fisch hire also appeared to be an 11th hour marrige of convenience kind of thing in between NFL jobs.  He may be gone soon too.

Translation:

"I don't agree with the opinions of a small minority of this board, so I hate you all!"

I, for one, am just tickled we have you here creating a thread about it.

No... as a matter of fact it is not, but I suppose that you can misinterpret what I write however you want. I said nothing about "only hiring unemployed guys." What I said was that just because something is common doesn't make it any less despicable. I, for one, believe that it is rather despicable to attempt to poach people from a place at which you've been for a single year. If there was some sort of previous relationship between Durkin and any of these other coaches, coordinators, etc... of which I am unaware then that would change the calculus of the situation. In my humble opinion, Durkin should use his own human network rather than attempting to poach some else's. He's been coaching long enough that he should have one by this point... It has nothing to do with being employed or unemployed.

Again, it's a hornets' nest around here when stuff like this happens; best to keep your head down, get your drive-by neggings, and just wait for everyone to move on to something else.  I do like reading the condescending "he didn't have honor" crap people throw around because a dude got offered a better job and took it.  I promise you that everyone here has or will at some point in his/her life interview/look for a job while working somewhere else.  And yet, nobody loses too much sleep about it, except when UM is on the "wrong" side of it.

A guy who has been here for almost a whole year knows when this blog should just pack it up and all posters should go to M-Live. Where the banter and in depth analysis is just unbelievable compared to this blog. Jumped the shark? WTF?

Be careful though because Fonzy loves this blog and says its cool.

After Michigan got its ass kicked and was beat down on national televison against Ohio State, there was a message board about Durkin's obvious failings. The blog quickly took that down -- only happy talk here! JOURNALISM!

The shark was jumped long before today.

The previous round of coaching change threads, which started about six weeks before Hoke was actually dismissed and ended mere hours before we found out that it was in fact happening, was definitely worse and that had perhaps the single most complete collection of crap / joke threads that came right along with it. We even began to explore the NAIA in our despair.

The funny thing is that even that is not the worst overall, in my opinion.

Dude. No. Stop. It has become clear that our defensive coordinator, rather than turning his full attention toward winning the biggest game of his team's season, decided instead to interview for a Maryland job that likely wasn't going anywhere anytime soon given this coaching search market. And as a result, we got as badly out schemed on defense as I've seen since Greg Robinson coached this defense. The team was utterly unprepared for Ohio state and looked like they hadn't watched a damn bit of film on them. That is unacceptable and is a disrespect to the job. He clearly was only treating this job as a quick stepping stone and I hope we stomp his ass on the field going forward.

There's practically no heat on this dude if our D didn't leave a big, steaming, loose turd on the field on the biggest game of the year and the Saturday after he was busy interviewing. If we win that game, everyone's like, "Thanks, it was great having you."

But when you walk out the door after clogging the host's toilet with a deuce you've been holding back for a week, well they aren't going to speak kindly about you...or invite you back.

Bye. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out of Ann Arbor.

Maybe coaching is different, but for most any job, no one turns in their best performance while they are interviewing and lining up their next gig.  I have no respect for Durkin after this, and notwithstanding all the analysis, place blame on a lot of the OSU failures in his lap.

He isn't someone earning a low salary and struggling to get by, it's not like Maryland became the Heaven sent reason he could afford to feed his family so of course you can't blame him for going for a promotion??  How can so many people here accept this?  Michigan IS the promotion!  Harbaugh accepted less salary to pay his staff more.  In return, Durkin showed he doesn't know what the word "loyalty" means.  Buh-bye and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

that this dude interviewed during the week of the biggest game of the year AND then we got our asses kicked.  Couldn't have waited til this week to meet with said also-ran football program?  I bet they would have waited til Monday.

Was that a deliberate reference to Trump at the end there?

I'll admit I haven't read the other posts yet but Bo's Lasting LEssons has a big part on focusing and working hard at the job you got.  SOunds like Durkin maybe had his mind elsewhere...

buy into this was just a "strange alignment of planets" guy, but I have not seen a unit of Michigan look so totally bewildered and disorganized as this defense looked last Saturday.   People like to talk about bad tackling, and it was.  But tackling, like realty starts with "location, location, location."  Watching the game on DVR is even more painful that it was in real life in this respect.  The gang looked confused and disorganized like I have not seen since Rich Rod.  The fact that this happens coincidentally with a DC interviewing for new job does not necessarily mean anything, but it sure does not look good.
