Lorenz Comments on MGo radio post OSU

Submitted by alum96 on

After a very insightful segment last week, Lorenz from 247 rejoined Ace and Brian for a lengthy segment post OSU.  Comments below as best as I can transcribe.

Note if a player's name is not listed below he was not discussed. (i.e. Walker)

http://www.wtka.com/2012/09/06/podcasts/

DL Jordan Elliott (!!) - all 4 of them

  • See him as sticking with UM if for nothing else than to prove doubters wrong.
  • UM coaches can see him as an outside or inside player (DE/DT) - same for Camp & Gary due to athleticism for all 3.

DL Keyshon Camp

  • Ace said he was surprised Camp left campus without committing since he paid his own way for an unofficial.
  • Lorenz said he was put off by weather and "re-affirmed" committment to USC.  Lorenz does not see him going to UM now.  USC confirming coach appealed to Camp.
  • A disappointment on Michigan's end - when recruiting Texas, Florida, California kids this is going to happen.

CB Lavert Hill

  • Going to keep dragging it along and go on all 5 official visits and wait til UA AA Game Jan 9 to announce.
  • Doesn't know what schools he will go visit.  But doesn't take away from UM's chances.  UM feels supremely confident.

WR Donnie Corley

  • Pursuit of Corley is rooted in connection with Hill. i.e. hope they can get a "package deal".  Corley "may" not commit Dec 8.

ALL Mecole Hardman

  • Brian says Hardman said generic nice things; didn't see movement on Hardman.
  • Lorenz thinks he stays down south.  Maybe TN.  GA seemed to be the fav b4 firing.
  • Loves Jeremy Pruitt.

TE Isaac Nauta

  • GA firing coach works out for UM of course.  Nauta had great relationsip with staff.  Proximity is big for Georgia.  GA barely uses TE.
  • UM coaches confidence as never been higher post firing.
  • Nauta may go to GA after new coaches announced to visit.
  • Lorenz thinks fit is too good - if Nauta goes to GA it sure doesn't have to do with "TE things" and fit.
  • Nauta wants EE.
  • Lorenz wouldn't call UM favorites.

WR Pie Young

  • Thought he would commit this weekend.  Other finalists FSU & Bama and those schools have other players higher on board so he is not a take for them at this point.  Only UM would take him right now (edit: of those 3 schools).
  • he might be waiting to see who Miami hires.
  • Still would be surprised if he is not part of class.

WR Velus Jones

  • Probably UM or Oklahoma if he leaves USC.  Had a great official to OK prior week.

WR Dylan Crawford

  • Went radio silent post Oregon visit.  He is a quiet kid as it is.  May decide at Army UA game.

WR Eddie McDoom

  • Will take official Dec 11.

Some trepidation they dont get any of these guys as they are trying to get some high end recruits (Corley / Crawford) and could miss on those and then lower targets could be elsewhere.

LB Dontavious Jackson

  • UM did very well with Jackson.  He is a huge priority for UM.  Obvious need on field vs OSU helped. (silver lining of getting a$$ kicked I guess)
  • UM made it crystal clear with current LB situation he is a guy who could come in and compete immediately to play.
  • LSU FSU Texas other challengers.
  • UM at very least should be in til the end

CB Chis Brown

  • Same as last week - Texas v UM as top 2.  Dad loves Wolverines.

DL Rashad Weaver

  • Brian: Scheduled visit to Temple - is this prelude to decommitment? Lorenz - maybe.

OG Terrance Davis

  • UM remains in great shape.  No known competitors who are serious.  Maryland Lorenz guesses is one (Durkin!)
  • Last week Lorenz said Davis *or* Delance not both in class. That has changed now.  Would take Davis now if he says yes.
  • Mom and grandma came with him.
  • Will he wait to commit at UA game? Maybe.

Some of the recruiting gurus were saying that Davis looks like a guy who could play right away. If that's the case, I'd hope we'd be open to taking both him and Delance given the lackluster play at G this year.

That generally seems to be Harbaugh's technique and MO based on what happened at Stanford.  You get very little contact rather than "good bye".  That's what has me worried about Enis remaining in this class as he said he only heard from UM once in a month.

But I mean if they would take Pie Young today and still reserve a spot for say Crawford people need to go at offensive skill positions who are already committed.  (I know Enis is a guy who could in theory play both sides).

Honestly, HS coaches complain about that stuff but in the end, almost all of them would do the same thing if the tables were turned. I don't like this part of Harbaugh, and it was known when he started, but it's how college football is.

Winning football games just isn't more important than the institutions integrity.

Be honest with recruits.

If you decide they are a "maybe" - then you TELL them they are... you don't just ignore the kid.

If you decide you don't want a kid - then you TELL him that you don't just ignore him and hope he "gets the hint" he isn't wanted and looks elsewhere.

I'm not saying you never change your mind on a offered kid, and I'm not saying you never offer a kid as a contingency dependent on another player - I'm just saying you be upfront about what you are doing.

Someone needs to tell me why the fuck top TEs don't pick Michigan instead of taking flyers on random places like UCLA and UGA? Places that DON'T USE TEs....

Apparently Jake Butt being a first rounder, Zach Ertz and Colby Fleener being in the NFL isn't enough proof for TEs to come to Michigan.

The coaches probably just tell these guys they will change their whole system for them. Plus, some guys like to stay close to home or in the case of Clark, aren't exactly excellent decision-makers.

I bet if Michigan produced the #1 TE recruit, Harbaugh would have him locked up by his junior year of high school.

OR he's gonna end up being asked to greyshirt, or given the cold shoulder until he announces he's now a proud preferred walk-on, or he blows up and we send him a birthday cake... one of those 3 outcomes will happen for C. Dunaway.

He's a legacy whose brother is a walk-on. Whichever of those ways it goes he'll be Blue!

There were numerous questions in the recruiting roundup yesterday about David Reese and why they won't allow him to EE - I believe it's because early enrollment happens BEFORE the Bowl game and Firm Handshake ceremony. Until some 5th years are not invited back or other players voluntarily transfer, we cannot accept unlimited EE. It puts us over the hard cap of 85 schollies.

The 3 EE limit is strictly for how many can be back-dated to the '15 class to allow the class to reach maximum number that hits that 85 cap.

I have a hard time believing that Michigan is the ONLY school that would take a commitment from Pie Young.

If D.J. Durkin gets a head coaching job and Georgia fires Jeremy Pruitt, then Michigan should hire Jeremy Pruitt and get Mecole Hardman along with him.

It wasnt "any school" - it was of Bama, FSU, and UM which are Pie's 3 schools now.  Very reasonable to believe Bama and FSU have higher targets in mind first.

Lorenz says every ecruit loves Pruitt.

Apparently Pruitt was with Hardman's mom at church Sunday. :)

Now Jim needs to go his mom's workplace.

Also google says just in: Report: Georgia DC Jeremy Pruitt a potential candidate for South Carolina job

Re the Delance/Davis thing, I was under the impression from Lorenz's last MGoRadio segement that UM was basically not allowing Davis to commit because UM felt they needed to prioritize a tackle type prospect which Delance is while Davis is pure gaurd.  From this segement, I got the impression that it still may be one or the other, but would now take Davis if that ment no Delance anyway.  Maybe I heard wrong.

One of my frustrations any there's a post on recruiting (regardless of site, sport, etc.) is when the author assumes everyone know what position and year these kids are.  While I follow recruiting relatively closely, the number of names out there is hard to keep up with and thus it would be extremely helpful to list their position and year after their name.

Jordon Elliot (2016 DT)

This is even worse with basketball at times, but it would still be helpful.  Just my 2-cents.  Otherwise I really appreciate this post as I haven't had time to listen and my focus is now squarely on recruiting.
