Michigan to re-retire 5 legend numbers (including Howard's #21) on Saturday

They will have a display area on the concourse inside the stadium.

I'm guessing this means we're going to see 2 come out of circulation sometime in the relatively near future.

What is the #2 tradition? And don't say "the best DB wears it" because Vincent Smith just wore it 3 years ago.
There is no tradition with that number. Countess switched to it for one year.

There is no such tradition anymore.
Ahmir Mitchell confirmed on twitter that he's gonna be wearing #2 at Michigan.
I LOVE that idea. Chris Calloway and Walter Smith type deal.

In case the other qb has dyslexia, then you were right the first time.

Or 2017, whatever comes first.
I also understand the importance of the #1, but I'm sorry...AC should be honored. This is why I don't like taking the number out of circulation.
Honor the PLAYER - not the number. It wasn't the number that made the player.
Patches were a bad idea...but honor the PLAYER.
AC...maybe even Braylon, they deserve to be honored.

Totally agree on comments about Anthony Carter (shocker, right?).
Desmond had a better single season - man, that was a crazy season. He couldn't NOT score touchdowns! Carter dominated over a four-year career.
This was a time when Michigan didn't throw the ball much. And if they did, you knew who to whom it was going.
Stats via wikipedia:
Records[edit]
When he graduated, Carter held nearly every Michigan career receiving and return record. He was the schools's all time leader in:
- touchdowns: 40 (now ranks fifth; record held by Anthony Thomas with 55)
- receptions: 161 (now ranks fifth; record held by Braylon Edwards with 252)
- receiving yards: 3,076 (now ranks second; record held by Braylon Edwards with 3,541)
- touchdown receptions: 37 (now ranks second; record held by Braylon Edwards with 39)
- punt returns: 79 (now ranks second; record held by Steve Breaston with 127)
- punt return yardage: 907 (now ranks second; record held by Steve Breaston with 1,599)
- kickoff returns: 63 (now ranks second; record held by Steve Breaston with 81)
- kickoff return yardage: 1,606 (now ranks second; record held by Steve Breaston with 1,993)
His average of 17.4 yards-per-play was an NCAA record.
Awards[edit]
- University of Michigan MVP: 1980, 1982
- Big Ten Conference MVP: 1982
- All-Big Ten: 1980, 1981, 1982
- All-American: 1980, 1981, 1982
- Heisman Trophy voting: 1980—10th; 1981—7th; 1982—4th

Cool tidbit on the Wistert brothers from one of the official Twitters today. No three brothers (apart from them) have ever been named first team All-Americans in any sport at any NCAA division. Pretty incredible feat.

Harmon played halfback, not quarterback. His quarterback and captain was the extremely colorful Forest Evashevski. Definitely recommend clicking if you haven't heard some of the stories.
Devin looked badass in 98, though, even if the teams were less than badass.
November 22nd, 2015 at 6:22 PM ^
The story about the victory cigar was hilarious - 30 seconds still left on the clock and Evashevski lights up in celebration of a win over Ohio State in 1939. IF only you could get away with something like that today and not be read the riot act by just about everyone in sight of you.
November 22nd, 2015 at 6:26 PM ^
That's Burke-level swag and Hart-level trolling, but my favorite is Crisler saying the team needed to play like eleven lions on offense and eleven tigers on defense and Evashevski claiming he wouldn't play unless he could play like a leapord.

I've said this for years...
Build statues for the player...keep all of the numbers in circulation. Plaques for an All-American wall or players who deserve to be honored, but not quite at the "retired number" level.
Makes too much sense, it's something that fans can visit every year. If you put them outside the stadium in some kind of monument park, fans can visit them any time.
