Goalposts are a new color this year - anyone know why?
I noticed that the goalposts are a bright greenish yellow this year, as opposed to the white uppers and black (or was it dark blue?) curved base in years past.
I walk past the practice field en route to the Stadium and I noticed that the outdoor field's goalposts are that same bright greenish yellow. I've looked at a few old pictures and it seems like MSU's have been this color for several years.

a. Coach Harbaugh's control-freakish request per his preference.
b. Some sort of new NCAA or FBS standardization.
These are both guesses.
Fascinating stuff, though, really.

I assumed it was because they painted them.

"Harbaugh's control-freakish request". Wow, you say that as sort of a bad thing, we already had 4 years of this....
...and how did that work out for us. I will take the control freak, as you put it any day of the week. We have one of the best coaches in football, but some people are never satisfied.

NCAA says they must be white or yellow. The neon yellow might be to help the kicker see it againts a sea of Maize
September 21st, 2015 at 11:12 AM ^
The limitation is why I think the yellow on the goalpsts is meant to be highly visible against a filled stadium and really for no other reason.
As a general note to the board, if anyone is curious, here's the rule in case you've never seen it -
Each goal shall consist of two white or yellow uprights extending at least 30 feet above the ground with a connecting white or yellow horizontal crossbar, the top of which is 10 feet above the ground. The inside of the uprights and crossbar shall be in the same vertical plane as the inside edge of the end line. Each goal is out of bounds (see Appendix D).

I believe the change was made at Baxter's discretion. If someone wants to go back and get the quotes from when it happened I'm open to being wrong, though.

FWIW OSU's are still white upper with red (I suppose I should say scarlet) at the base. Probably some kind of state law against anything yellow or yellow-ish. With the exception of the flowers in the rotunda. I can't imagine why they let those stay blue and yellow.

Well, I believe they wanted to make sure the aliens could see them from their spaceships. They got angry because it was hard to see whether or not the field goals were good so they abducted Harbaugh and told him to make them brighter and stop playing rap music in the stadium which damaged the sensitive hearing organs of the aliens. The make up of the rods and cones in their eyes actually don't allow them to see white very well hence the new bright neon yellow goal posts. In exchange they said they would use their special ray blaster to alter the trajectory of footballs when our opponents are on offense. Harbaugh agreed and now we have what you saw Saturday. This is all what Doug Karsch told me. I believe him because I also suspect he is an Alien.

Hmmm, I bet the yellow watch is some sort of alien communication device. It's all making sense now.

Good point! I'm sure that is no coincidence.

I might. Only if the aliens contact me.

I stole, then mailed a lifetime suppy of ALZ 112 to Mean Joe on 09/08/2013. One week later he was posting incisive comments on MGOBLOG.
I also feed ALZ 112 to great white sharks and moose. Think about that.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Neon is literally red-orange.
September 21st, 2015 at 12:07 PM ^
Neon is a colorless, odorless, inert monatomic gas under standard conditions, with about two-thirds the density of air and TECHNICALLY it's every color except the red color that it reflects back at your eyes that you see.
You've literally just been koalified.

Breakaway goalposts serve two main purposes ....
1. They can be disassembled quickly ahead of fans storming the field
2. They can be more easily disassembled for other events at MICHIGAN STADIUM not requiring goal posts.
3. This topic was already raised and at least 50% of the board hadn't noticed the change and many insisted that the goalposts had always been yellow...
LOL. Monday.

The field has been rushed twice since then. Once for Hoke's win against OSU in The Game and once for the 900th program win against MSU.
September 21st, 2015 at 1:47 PM ^
Yeah, I was at the win over OSU when this happened. The next time M beats OSU or MSU you best believe that students will rush that field.
September 21st, 2015 at 11:25 AM ^
Yeah, at 40yrs old I was on the field after win #900 after being in the 5th row of the Alumni Assoc section in the south endzone. My wife and buddy's wife each got a look on their faces when the Students started piling over the wall and next thing, they're gone too ....we had no choice but to follow.
My wife ended up getting a picture with the then Drum Major (she LOVES! the band) and the security basically let the fans celebrate until asking everyone to clear the field. All it did was interrupt some postgame featuring both bands and was a very mild "storming the field" otherwise.
We've tried to play Where's Waldo a few times ...pretty sure about where we are! LOL
September 21st, 2015 at 11:15 AM ^
Fans swarmed the field after 2011 OSU (I was one of them). It was pretty slow though - not sure I would call it "rushing" the field.
September 21st, 2015 at 11:00 AM ^
Harbaugh was angry one day at practice, touched the goal posts, and scared them into shifting colors.
Yes, Harbaugh can scare inanimate metal objects...

In all things there is balance. Light and dark. Good and evil. Yin and Yang.
Maize and Highlighter Yellow.
As the uniforms became a maize-ier yellow, the highlighter yellow had to go somewhere to ensure balance. Fact.

At big colleges/NFL is a kind of flourescent yellow designed to reflect light. It's a color that contrasts well with backgrounds that are multicolored for the kicker and green for the crowd. It also works well under a variety of lighting conditions including indoors, raining, sunset, etc. It also helps that not that many teams have yellow as a primary color so you don't have to worry about fans' jerseys.
It has nothing to do with Michigan yellow/maize.

Going back to an earlier thread on the topic, one post was:
I took the stadium tour this week ($15 a person and awesome!). The goal posts match the NFL color, and it was at Baxter's request according to the tour guide.
