Hail And Unite rebranding and on the PR offensive
The Hail and Unite team has started a PR Twitter account and going on the the PR offensive. They have rebranded it as a pump-up/hype song not intended to replace "The Victors," and they plan to reintroduce the song proposal to CSG next week.
I don't want to be too hard or bash these guys, but they really need to let this idea die. And if they do feel so strongly about it, they should just come up with it on their own in collaboration with other students, and if the song is good enough, it will catch on organically. Going to CSG for funding for an official project and paying someone who doesn't care at all about Michigan is the wrong way to go about this.

that's what I meant, them and everyone else can just pretend this lunacy never happened

The University does have a school of music. If they really have to have another song, why not have it written within the University's music program? I'm pretty sure there's plenty of talent there.
February 14th, 2015 at 3:54 AM ^
But that won't get them famous and allow them to rub elbows with the big players in "the Industry".

An acceptance of Varsity and the reintroduction of it with a heavier play is what should be taken out of this episode...Varsity. Bring that more to the forefront...

During third down, instead of having that generic pop song that every other school has, we’re going to have our own song that we created, that we were a part of,” he said in an interview with The Michigan Daily on Wednesday evening.
The band already plays a song on 3rd down.
Solution: get rid of piped in music, play that song every 3rd down.
Then, play Michigan's other fight song more than once per pregame. You know, the one that has existed since 1912. This way, we avoid any stupid "pump up" Freakbass-like crap.

... I said it in another thread, but there is nothing more dangerous than a person with dogged determination to pursue terrible ideas.
Their statement reads like a C+ paper for an 8th grade argumentative writing class.
Love this quote:
"Hail and Unite is a student-led movement aiming to energize Michigan fans globally"
Well, you've succeeded in energizing everybody against you.

Was Dave Brandon Obi-Wan?
Did striking him down allow him to rise up as a bunch of students with even more terrible ideas or something?

Seriosuly, I can't believe people got so upset at Brian for burning this kid's terrible idea when all along he had a picture of himself looking like the biggest tool to ever walk the planet posted to a public Twitter account. God knows how many other public snafus he has made and is going to make in the future regardless of what Brian says or does.

Organizers also hope to create a music video and a documentary showcasing the process of creating the song.
I'm really interested to hear Bando's take on this utter spray-fart of an idea. He usually has pretty good zingers when crapping on ideas but out by the now-defunct DB athletic department.

The only way this would be remotely interesting is if David Cone is rapping.

It's not about it being labeled a "fight song," it's a god damn ridiculous idea no matter what you file it under.
And if he didn't want the backlash he shouldn't have made a public proposal to obtain STUDENT FUNDING for this shitshow.
Keep this shit at AEPi.

Yes, the song is probably a terrible idea and will fail. But back throughout the 1900s, it was commonplace for a class to create a song every once in awhile. Victors, Varsity, and my personal favorite Michigan Men were all songs created by students at some point. Here is a good link from the Men's Glee Club showing past songs. The last one was created in 1993.
February 12th, 2015 at 8:58 PM ^
The Victors didn't even catch on and truly become THE song here until about 1918 when Michigan re-joined the B1G. Despite it being penned in 1898, Hot Time was still Michigan's school song until 1909.
I've been going through old copies of the Michigan Alumnus online and see references to Hot Time. Always loved that song before I knew it belonged to Michigan first in terms of being a song played by the marching band.
You are right about students creating songs back then. A lot of them were flops, too. I downloaded an E book of the book Bando was talking about yesterday called Michigan's Favorite Songs, 3rd edition and read some of the lyrics to some of them.
Yeah, not so good.
February 12th, 2015 at 9:00 PM ^
Of Wisconsin or other teams, but after hearing that I'm so glad we have The Victors and not Hot Time.

Yes, but did we hire pop stars to write those other songs?

Those morons are going full steam ahead with the Tweets... thanking the Daily, Freep, WaPo, anyone who will give those morons 15 minutes.
Not a single tweet to them can be found on their page.
If PR blitz is DB rule #2, Dave Brandon rule #3 is control the media.

I don't want to hear "In the Big House" by Pop Evil. I don't want to hear "In Da Big Hizz-ay" by Random Rapper. I don't want to hear "Big House bay-bee" by Generic Pop Singer.
I want to hear "Touchdown, Michigan!" from the announcer's booth and the Victors played by the band.
Michigan football doesn't need "Wow factor." It needs winning teams.
I swear Dave Brandon called these guys and told them "hey I've got a great idea for you" as his revenge for getting the boot.

This idea is dumb but so is categorically dismissing an entire genre of music.

February 13th, 2015 at 8:39 AM ^
Elevator muzak isn't made with art in mind so I don't know if you can even call it music, and bagpipes are an instrument, not a genre of music.

I don't see why they think we need to add anything. We already have so much great tradition that is so unique to the Big House and no other venue, like Seven Nation Army and Sweet Caroline, I just don't see why we would need to add anything else.
