Jay Harbaugh gives Clark 8 hand-written reasons to Go Blue
number 8 is certainly the best reason
http://michigan.247sports.com/Bolt/Michigan-Gives-Clark-8-Reasons-To-Co…
Paraphased:
1. we're really good at using TE's
2. can wear number 8 and 30,000+ more fans will see it every home game(not in the letter: Bellomy probably not coming back)
3. EDIT: list of many NFL cities nearby to scout you
4. we have a good QB
5. best public school in america
6. most wins ever
7. biggest Adidas contract = more swag
8. WE WILL WIN

Every time I write adidas I have check it and think "all day I dream about soccer." I'm a Michigan educated man. Life shouldn't be this hard! Nike is easy to remember!

So four-letter words are a breeze, but six-letter words are a bridge too far?
January 29th, 2015 at 8:16 PM ^
Well either Russ is changing #s or the writing is on the wall... pun intended.
Also worth noting in any headline / OP you need to make a distinction between Jay and Jim.
Broader question to people in general - outside of checks when is the last thing anyone under the age of 45-50 has written of this length minimum. It sounds silly but I realized the other day I barely write anymore with actual pen/pencil other than signing checks. It's all typing nowadays. I might write a sentence or two max on a piece of paper as a reminder but multiple paragraphs? I can't recall. Years I am sure.
Jay - old school.

That's a good question. I hand-wrote a letter to a group of senior players I coached a couple years ago.... after I typed the draft of it.

You sign checks? There are much better ways to pay for stuff. Most banks even have apps to send a bank check instead of writing it out.

I'm at a credit union man - old school.
Fight the establishment. Never forget 2008. :P

I don't really need to write checks anymore, but until a few years ago, I wrote one per month because of an argument with the bank that used to own my mortgage (that somehow changed too in the intervening time). I wanted to take advantage of the auto-pay feature on the site for my mortgage, but they wouldn't let me do it unless I had a checking or savings account with them, something which seemed asinine being that Bank Of The West's nearest branches are about an hour west of Chicago (at least when I last bothered to look), some five hours west of me. They would not budge on this minor detail either. At the time when this tiff occured, my credit union did not have an app for "circumventing" that issue quite yet.

I didn't know people still wrote checks

Am I the only person who has a landlord who is just one person, not a management company? I can't do automatic withdrawal, and I've run into trouble with my bank's bill pay in the past, so writing a check is the only way.

Can I write check?

The thing that still has me thinking he's going there though is his praise for them after his visit. He just sounds like he's already sold on sunshine and air pollution.
With that being said, I really hope he has a change of heart. I have full faith in what Jay is saying here, and I really like his enthusiasm.

I live in LA now and have been to Westwood tons of times. It's awesome. It really is. The thing about UCLA though is the weird separation from sports and the campus. The Rose Bowl is amazing but on Pasadena is like an HOUR away from Westwood. If i was a huge football fan and a student I would hate that aspect. I feel like it takes away from the support of the team in general. Not that LA sports fans are particularly good to begin with.

very misleading to put " (bellomy probably not coming back)" in your paraphase. the note mentions nothing about bellomy. this is how false rumors get started.
#8 at UCLA is retired for Troy Aikman. that was likely the point.

Found an explanation here:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2012/10/24/usc-ncaa-rulebook-chang…
The only rule, per the NCAA, is that two players with the same number cannot be on the field at the same time. This rule is put into place to avoid the sort of confusion that reigns when two players with the same number step onto the field in a key situation.

or just the fact that Chris Clark can't wear #8 at UCLA since it's a retired number.
January 29th, 2015 at 9:00 PM ^
January 29th, 2015 at 8:45 PM ^
I highly doubt that is what was meant.
I think he means that #8 is retired at UCLA and he isnt allowed to wear at all.
When he says "you can wear the #8 here", he literally means that he can do it..not that he is automatically going to be given the number. I dont think it would be a good look to yank a seniors number away and give it to a freshman. They might have told him he can have it once it is available though. That seems reasonable.

thought the parenthesis would prevent people from thinking it is in the letter but i'll fix to make sure

Where Jay says this is a special time at a very special place.
Chris Clark has the opportunity to be a part of something special; be in Harbaugh's first recruiting class, and be a part of the foundation that brings Michigan back to the top. This really is a pivotal moment in time, and Chris has the chance to be a part of that. GO BLUE, Chris!
