Members of Sigma Alpha Mu may face criminal charges for allegedly partying at the Otsego County resort last weekend, breaking windows and damaging furniture and light fixtures, and littering the rooms with food and beer and wine bottles. Barry Owens, Treetops resort general manager, estimated the damage at $50,000.
The group, which included 120 men and women, didn't even ski, said Owens.
They didn't even FUCKING SKI.
But it does look like they consumed wine. Classy folks.

I'd smile if I read about someone vandalizing Sigma Alpha Mu now

Anyone else shocked that the wall sconce survived, seemingly untouched?

Doesn't sound like they snuck out...
"Police say they had to escort the members of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity out after they wreaked havoc in the hotel rooms and hallways. "

Animals. They literally destroyed each tile in the drop ceiling. Like not cracked in half but disintegrated. Animals.

by the previous reports of "$50,000 of damage" ? Thought it might just be a few vases turned over? I guess if they were like, really nice vases... Or maybe a chandelier or two...

A report of $50,000 in damages in itself is not impressive without evidence. At least to attorneys. People will claim $50,000 in damages for a busted bumper and a bruised leg.
January 21st, 2015 at 11:28 PM ^
I guess maybe since the destroyed tiles were broken into little pieces and it looks messier, that this is an outrage?
Oh yeah, kids get drunk and they and their parents pay for property damage. This is important, because???

If something serious related to UM happens, we're going to talk about it. If said incident involves people being assholes, we're going to call them assholes (and that's the least they deserve). Get over it. If you don't want any part of it, no one if forcing you to click these threads.

if you had a ski vacation planned for your family and your wife and kids were cowering in their room scared shitless or if your vacation plans were ruined because your room was torn apart by these morons.
Making excuses for this is total bullshit.

Everybody steals, everybody murders, they trash my house, they trash your house....
January 22nd, 2015 at 4:25 AM ^
Your blithe indifference to potentially criminal behavior committed by UM students is consistent. Back on November 16, you wrote this about Frank Clark after his arrest:
"I don't care what he did or didn't do (honestly, I don't),..."
Yet at the same time you're morally disgusted with the alleged and unproven allegations about Les Miles, saying in early December here:
"Maybe because Miles is not a moral or academic leader. In fact, he seems deficient in those areas.... Because Miles doesn't have the moral leadership Michigan looks for in a coach?...It's pretty undisputed that he is a scumbag."
On December 10, you said in reference to the option of hiring Miles:
"But, I think people who care more about the University (I.e. Alums and such) might see it as tarnishing one of the things that makes Michigan special, integrity."
Les Miles has never been accused of committing tens of thousands of dollars of damage to private property, nor has be been accused of physical violence against a pregant woman. Regardless, you freely castigate him for alleged moral turpitude and a lack of integrity while expressing overt, condescending disdain for anybody who is disgusted over the criminal acts of UM students off-campus.
You're a hypocrite of the first order.

because somehow premium content was posted. While I agree with the request for deletion if this was true, I have a hard time reconciling concern for premium content while apparently thinking totally trashing someones property as part of having a good time is acceptable. That's really fucked up.
They didn't use their names. They went there using the frat name and thereby were representatives of that frat and the University of Michigan.
January 22nd, 2015 at 8:25 AM ^
If a kid at any school messes up, the administration or team will take care of it. Except in egregious circumstances, this has little to do with us and is mainly a sad thing for a young kid.
That is a lot different than evaluating a person to be a coach/teacher at Michigan. If we are speculating on putting someone in a position of power like that, they should have moral character.
Finally, premium content has little to do with either of those. Legally, they can copyright their stories "as written," but repeating a summary of what was learned there is not illegal or immoral. It just bilateral the board rules Brian set up to respect his fellow journalists. I respect That stance because Brian doesn't have to take it.

Ceiling tiles are stupid, probably jumping up and 2+idiots made a game up it while blacked out.
Cabinets broken were also stupid, not sure of the ceiling of that room. I went to a bunch of parties that looked similar to that room, the difference is we/they cleaned everything up and didn't throw knives at the ceiling or break cabinets or destroy ceiling tiles. That furniture looks tipped over with the leaf out of it, not broken but I may be wrong.
They're idiots and will have to pay possibly be charged with vandalism. Hopefully they get something on their record and learn a lesson(doubtful)
I think if they had just cleaned up total damage would probably be under 10k. I'm guessing that's the worst but majority of rooms will have to steam cleaned or carpets replaced etc.
It's dumb, makes both fraternities and U of M look bad. It isn't as bad as a game of knockout, or academic fraud or some other things which is why many are dismissing it as stupid college kids versus a huge deal. Nothing shocking here drunk college kids do stupid things not thinking of consequences.
