Nick Saban Misery Appreciation Thread II
Last year I posted the first of my Nick Saban Misery Appreciation threads after they lost to Oklahoma. This one is a little sweeter, and as much as I hate Ohio State winning any game, I just have a real appreciation for Alabama and the SEC taking a blow to their egos. How can you not appreciate this look:

As do I. As much as I hate OSU, I honestly can't believe how great it felt when Bama lost, and to know the fans weren't going to brag about it for the next 10 years.

Any redneck Alabama fans on youtube yet?
I guess that's the only positive I can take away from this.

I don't like tOSU winning either, but short of a meteor blasting into the stadium and taking both teams out, someone had to win and someone had to lose. SEC tears are nice.
From here on out, GO DUCKS.

They're all back in their trailers drinking homemade and punching each other in the eye.

The SEC has had an eight year media slurpfest. Alabama has gotten the Alabama Exemption, in which they are automatically ranked the highest of any team with their record, since the 2009 SEC Championship Game.
This year, the illusion of SEC supremacy has been shattered. Sure, it was Ohio State, but Michigan will benefit from this down the road. Someday, within the next few years, it could come down to Michigan vs an SEC team with the same amount of losses for a playoff berth. Now, MIchigan might actually have a chance of being chosen.
I am rooting for Oregon to win the National Championship. I don't want Ohio State to win it, mainly because they are such assholes about cheering against Michigan when they have a chance for any championship.
Part of me wants Oregon to hammer them, but it might harm the national perception of the Big Ten. So the other part of me wants to see Oregon win on the last play of the game after Ohio State thinks they have the game won. I would love to see Ohio State get screwed like Miami did against Ohio State with the flag that was thrown after the clock had expired and people were already pouring onto the field.
Poetic justice, and all that...

I was thinking about thisone for a while, whether or not to want osu to win last night and ONLY because of their opponent did I root for them. Howevah, that's where it will stop. Good for the B1G and bad for the SEC following the result of last night's game, but now I'm fine with Oregon winning next week. Honestly, I think they're a bit better anyway.
I think that last night's game, msu's win and Wisconsin's win, all will benefit the conference's recruiting, somewhere along the line of "We're beating the best, come and play with the best" sort of way.
January 2nd, 2015 at 10:14 AM ^
just fine with Oregon hammering OSU. I don't think it would harm the perception. I believe the B1G is 5-2 in bowl games and losing in the NCG to the Heisman trophy winner would not be that shameful, IMO. So, let's go Ducks!
January 2nd, 2015 at 12:02 PM ^
I agree, even with a loss like that to an Oregon team, not sure the B1G gets a bad perception. I honestly think you'll see many stories about Ohio State, even with the loss to Oregon should it happen, and how the win against Bama did a lot in starting to shift the "tide" if you will. As much as it pains me to say it, it's probably good that it's OSU, because the media tends to have a love fest for them and Urban. In the end, B1G will gain from it.
Fyi, just checked and B1G is 5-4 in bowl games with Iowa to play Tennessee today, and then the NCG of course, but still a solid record when looking at the wins and losses in terms of quality.
January 2nd, 2015 at 9:59 PM ^
but even at 5-4 they won the "marquee" games. Wiscy, MSU and OSU
January 2nd, 2015 at 2:03 PM ^
I've thought about it, and concluded that I'd rather this be a game where Oregon blows the doors off and I can go do something else midway through the third quarter. OSU (and MSU and Wisconsin and so on) has already proved that the national media's derision of the B1G is misplaced and/or outdated.
Now I want a full game of this:

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
If OSU is playing against a team coached by Satan, with Hitler as starting QB, you cheer for the Devil.
Fuck Ohio.

He was totally out-coached by Meyer. He relies too much on having talent that's heads and shoulders above everyone else. When that does not happen, he looks ordinary. There was nothing special in his schemes and playcalling, on offense or defense. He looked his best when his punter was on the field.
I really think he's been handcuffed somewhat by the increased attention on oversigning. He's starting to lose the massive talent advantage he had over everybody else every game.
January 2nd, 2015 at 2:55 AM ^
Bingo. Saban is a brilliant evaluator of talent and great at getting the right guys on the field, but I get the impression that as a tactician, 'Bama fans think of him like we often thought of Lloyd back in the day -- too conservative and too reliant on just having superior talent.
January 2nd, 2015 at 2:59 AM ^
I go to rivals.com and the guys I want the most have 5 stars next to their name.
January 2nd, 2015 at 3:58 AM ^
lol thats true.
i guess you would say he is a great recruiter and he develops that talent well.
as for schematics, i think he is being a little underrated here. he is a defensive guy. his offense is conservative, but his defense is very aggressive.
January 2nd, 2015 at 7:05 AM ^
Saban takes 5* guys with offers from every school and also puts them into the NFL. But how much better did they get at Bama? I don't know the answer.
He's a genius salesman. That's why he was bad in the NFL.

Dantonio has done far more at MSU than Saban ever did while he was there. Saban never even won a bowl game with MSU.

Ohio will hate us the most, and their misery will be the greatest, when Michigan is preventing their victory. The only thing they hate more than losing is losing to Michigan. The loss will hurt the most when they're #1 and we kick them out of the playoffs. They need to get a brief taste of sweetness so the next decade of misery can feel its worst.

On the recruiting trail. Go B1G, reap the rewards of the pain inflicted this past bowl season. Now is the time for UM to burst out of the fog and get those kids who are solid SEC "gets" and put a UM bug in their ear whether they have committed or not.....GO BLUE!

...Urban's college winning % is #4 all-time for coaches that have been active a minimum of ten years.
Like it or not, the guy is going to be a formidable adversary for Harbaugh and crew.
I think we are a lot more likely to see "the 10-Year War, Part 2" than a redux of the Cooper era.
January 2nd, 2015 at 10:22 AM ^
Maybe the 49ers will be interested in Urban. They hired Harbaugh from Stanford.

Urban Meyer is no John Cooper.

Bama QB is freakin horrible ...wtf
January 2nd, 2015 at 9:56 AM ^
Lazy D tacking by Bama also.
Why did Bama go away from running that big fast back on power sweep left too?? Wtf
January 2nd, 2015 at 11:50 AM ^
especially the SEC West and OLD Skkool SEC teams.
Other than Georgia, the SEC teams that have won their bowls were the expansion teams (A&M, South Carolina, Mizzou, Arkansas).
January 2nd, 2015 at 11:58 AM ^
Your point seems to be dead on... I am not saying that Bama players can't succeed in the NFL.. But with the amount of players getting there, I would think they would be much more success stories... Just do not see it....
So I think you are right that he could evaluate talent but I don't see him really developing them that well.. Honestly, I would like to see Saban do a Dantonio (he did coach in the past at MSU and I don't recollect a lot of talent NFL stars from Spartans.. I could be wrong) and see if he could develop.. I just don't necessarily see him being a developer...
Added, Saban is a defense coach and the defense has been getting worse each and every year....
I think JH will make the most of the talent he has (I really see a big bump this coming year with wins)...

I don't feel good basking in the SEC West's shortcomings and thusly Ohio State's success, especially since we were home for the bowl season. I'd rather just let this year play out and put my faith in Harbs to bring us up to their level.
