SEARCHBITS XXIII: HARBAUGHING ON ACE'S GAME HARBAUGH Comment Count

THE VERB REPLACED IS "STEP," YOU DEGENERATES

A BRIEF FOLLOW-UP ON "IT'S DONE." Ace debunked it yesterday; let me add my voice to the chorus of No Way. I am sure Marcellus Wiley does have serious people telling him it's a done deal. I have that. Many other people have that. There are many people saying it. That does not mean it's true. Done means pen to paper, press conference scheduled. That does not describe Harbaugh's situation.

I would triple that skepticism in re: Paul Finebaum's report of same. It's not done.

This is why it's a coaching fiasco—no matter the outcome. It's a circus and will always be a circus.

FWIW. Alejandro Zuniga compiled the full text of Wiley's assertion:

B5QHOA3CQAAjlw6[1]

BUT IT SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD YOU GUYS. I continue to get stuff too vague to Report but seemingly credible that indicates Michigan's AD is extremely confident this is getting done, with the current focus on handling buyout issues with San Francisco and an announcement by December 30th.

I fully believe many people in the AD and a big community of Harbaugh friends and acquaintances think it's all over but the shouting. I don't know if I believe they're 100%right, if you get my drift. Someone can always come in with a Godfather NFL offer. Going to be a long 8-10 days coming up.

SCHEFT SHIFT PART II. In the meantime I'd rather have randos coming out of the woodwork to say it's happening instead of it's not happening. It is also good when previously-adamant NFL guys are beginning to say it's possible. Ace mentioned Adam Schefter's apparent shift from "no way" in a lengthy Facebook post. First:

49ers HC Jim Harbaugh’s family and friends have been encouraging him to take the Michigan HC job, but he is torn because his heart is in the NFL, per sources close to the situation.

That's pretty good news, especially since I find the idea that Harbaugh's heart is in the NFL to be questionable at best. This is a guy who can't help quoting Bo about every press conference.

The rest of Schefter's post is a mixture of obvious bunk and interesting bits. Schefter asserts Michigan might not be able to wait, which is nuts. They are fully prepared to wait on Harbaugh until the 28th. They told their players they should expect a coach when they come back on January 4th. It is a a recruiting dead period (you can call but no face to face meetings) until then and if they have a good shot at Harbaugh—they do—they'd be insane to move on before he responds to an offer. Schefter also makes the bonkers assertion that "some have pointed out that recruiting would be a challenge," which may stand as the nuttiest thing said about this coaching search.

On the other hand, Schefter reports that:

  • Harbaugh's agent "has a good sense of realistic NFL options already," though this directly contradicts an assertion earlier in the post.
  • Harbaugh's wife is okay with a return to An Arbor.

So I don't know how seriously to take anything specific in there. The overall thrust is a guy going from utterly dismissive to serious, though, and that's a big move.

In smaller moves, Sam Webb incremented his current percentage($) from 60% to 65%, and Joe Pequeno, the reporter in Arizona who put the 49 million number on twitter, has it at 70%.

WHERE THE EXTREME SKEPTICISM MAY BE COMING FROM. NFL guys talk to agents, mostly. They've been adamant it isn't happening. Therefore: agent probably the reason NFL guys are so adamant. (That and NFL-level arrogance.) Agent likely has a vested interest in being adamant because he wasn't Harbaugh's agent when he was in college and might not be if he returns there. Dunn does not represent college coaches.

This isn't necessarily to say he's acting in bad faith, but he may be inclined to tilt towards something personally beneficial to him, and also to make NFL teams snap at the bait.

NO. Mike Florio reports that Harbaugh turned down a larger offer from Michigan than he got from the 49ers back in 2011—$5.2 million a year in fact. That is false. Negotiations with Harbaugh never got that far. That number was drawn up out of thin air by an agent: you can tell because the great and powerful NFL didn't pay him more than Michigan was offering when that's chump change to them.

A FOLLOWUP ON THE ROSS BIT. Yesterday I mentioned the Miami Herald reporting that the Dolphins were not suitors in the Harbaugh sweepstakes. I forgot to remind you that that's one of our main canaries here: if Ross gets involved with the Dolphins that's a sign the dream is dead. So far so good on that front.

PLAN B? Sam says that the ever-fluctuating Les Miles Realism Monitor is at low ebb($). IE: he doesn't seem like a realistic option. Up next would probably be swings at Stoops and Mora and then it's Mullen or a wild card with dubious qualifications.

????????

MATTISON RETURNS? We've heard DJ Durkin's name as a possible DC before, and now Sam mentions Greg Mattison as a possible… linebackers coach($)?

It sounds nutty, but Michigan did sign Mattison to a contract that lasts through 2016 last March. For Michigan the cost of not keeping Mattison is whatever the buyout is plus whoever the new coach is—close enough to Mattison's current deal that you may as well keep him. Meanwhile Mattison was planning on retiring in Ann Arbor before Hoke got axed and if Michigan's amenable he may still want to follow through on that plan. At this point in his career, I doubt he gives a crap about job titles, and Michigan could name him associate head coach or whatever. Would be good for continuity, recruiting, and Swag Mattison memes.

A BRIEF NOTE ON TIES. A clarifying note on the lead bit from yesterday: it doesn't mean anything—it was just a friend of the Harbaughs sending him some ties as a wink-wink joke. Somehow the receipt got loose and several people sent it to me, which I thought was funny. I thought it was clear this was just a "look at us we're crazy people" joke; if that was not clear it should be now.

One thing it's not: a "complete fabrication($)." That's what Tom Beaver called it, which is rich from a guy who spent the duration of TomVH's career at this blog implying that Tom was stealing his scoops from Beaver. Probably thinks he's stealing from him at ESPN now. Anyway, I have multiple independent pictures of the receipt, which I won't post because it has personal information on it and this is fundamentally trivial. But just ask yourself: when's the last time Beaver had anything checkable?

Beaver should stick to mangling the English language beyond recognizability and let the people with sources who exist outside their own head handle things.

ETC.: Wheatley on coaching in the pros versus college. Harbaugh's probably worth the money. Niners Nation poll on Harbaugh's future has Michigan as most likely option… and contract extension with 49ers #2. May not be scientific. Jamie Morris says his gut tells him Michigan will get Harbaugh.

My 83 year old Mother in Law who's visitng for the Holidays just fell and broke her hip this morning, meaning hip replacement surgery, weeks of hospitalization followed by months of rehab in a convalescent facility, followed by at least a few more weeks at our house until she's able to travel again...allow me to refresh your definition of "suckdiddlyuck"!!!!!!!!

Please Harbaugh, take me away from all this! :-(.........

I'm not going to bash Jeff Moss because I don't know what to think of him really, but what do you think of his report saying Harbaugh started a conversation with "Would you hate me if..."? Just sounds like crap to me.

I think Moss has been getting his info from Gregg Henson.

I can’t confirm it, but as you know, I’ve always been told he would be the next Michigan Head Coach. Face it, it is silly season and most don’t know what is really happening, including myself. My only goal is to attempt to disseminate the real from the nutty. At this point I don’t believe we will hear anything until the Monday after the Niner’s season is over, that’s what I’ve been told all along. One more week!

There's a buyout for Michigan to get Harbaugh or SF owes Harbaugh a buyout if they axe him?  I thought it was the latter, so what's to work out if he leaves?  Does he owe SF a buyout?

iamtjeff

Depends on who breaches the contract. If SF fires JH, they owe him. If JH leaves SF for UM (or anyone else), he owes SF. JH would smartly request UM to pay some portion of his breach amount. What's probably going on (assuming JH is coming to UM) is that JH/UM are working directly with SF to reach an equitable solution. Both parties know a break up is inevietable so the breach amount owed by JH/UM (if JH leaves and is not fired) may be reduced from what the contract says.

Is quite literally the least of our worries if Jim comes home. He will get very good talent AND make players better as they spend more time in the program. ( Yes, that second part is possible.). I will wait as long as it takes for Harbaugh. Don't want to Harbaugh too soon, a slow buildup leads to the best Harbaugh.

I can say with 100% certainty Tom Beaver is getting most of his coaching search information from a guy named Rockie on Board#5.  Rockie goes by stryperfan on the scout board.

Beaver tried to deny Rockie & Stryperfan are the same person but a few days later Stryperfan admitted to being Rockie.  Not sure why the beave lied about it?

Rockie/stryperfan is a bus driver who I believe has a connection with Andy Moeller .  The guy gives TB a lot of information but never gets credit for any of it.

It seems to me the real hold up here could be the difference between Harbaugh getting fired and Harbaugh having his contract bought out. It's an unusual situation in that the 49ers mgmt wants to fire him, but he is going to have excellent offers on the table. So it seems that neither one would want to make the first move because then they lose a lot of money (maybe not Harbaugh but either the 49ers or Michigan). Is this plausible?

diffcult to figure out from a sourcing or behavior standpoint. First of all, Harbaugh might be eccentric but he is totally professional. And he understands how the contract game works because he's been subject to pro and college football contracting for a long time.

All of the leaks in this story have come from Harbaugh's agent and company reps and from the Michigan side from people inside the search through second hand information passed along by friends or Harbaugh contacts or search firm contacts. Gregg Henson has been right on in most of his blogging, so that indicates that his sourcing is inside the AD, and his reporting is based on timelines disclosed within the football program and its network. If you really wanted to, you could narrow down his sources just by his previous reporting on other Michigan matters.

The NFL reporters and bloggers have gotten their information from the 49ers at first about Harbaugh's disintergrating relationship within the lockerroom and then from headsups delivered by former player spokesmen. Because they never believed that Harbaugh would actually go back to the college ranks from the pros, the insider types continually pushed this idea, which was buttressed by Harbaugh's agent's media cat and mouse game.

There was never a reason to push a Michigan agenda until there was a contract offer that could be used to leverage any negotiating position that benefitted Harbaugh from his agent's POV.

I just find it incredibly coincidental that Harbaugh's representation includes a Michigan grad as its chief client recruiter and contract negotiator. That is how an agent could deny being a leaker but have others perform that  role for him, so that certain information could be made public as needed to advance his client's position.

The other leaks from Harbaugh have come from his contacts with family and former Michigan teammates and friends. Those would mostly be about the emotional aspect of this. Jim only gets advice from those close to him, so it makes no sense that NFL insiders would have pertinent information about his decision-making or his personal view of things.

What is also clear is this: You learn by doing. In other words, the smoke on the battlefield obscures much of the landscape and issues that occur during battle. But once that smoke clears, you can see the terrain much better. And that is what Brian is discovering in the course of this search. As we get nearer to a decision, the hills and valleys become easier to spot.

Once you understand how the process works, you understand how information flows and which information comes from which sourcing area. One thing I find dubious about Brian's changing position is the stuff about Harbaugh never being professionally torn about staying in the NFL or returning to college. I think this has been a huge choice for him regardless of how his agent has acted in his stead. Once he made that choice, however, and got family support to move to AA, then everything else is about following the legal course that best suits his exit in SF. That is the endgame we are witnessing now.

non-stop on top of this blog for probably a decade.   and add sound too.  an all-time classic.

thank you for the update.  and i reiterate my earlier post about the alleged quote from harbaugh that started with, 'would you hate me if i...'   no man, especially a man's man like harbaugh, would have the phrase come out of his mouth.  you have to have indoor plumbing to let those words come out of your mouth.

I hate admit it but I've been following Gregg Henson's blog for about six weeks. Everything he's been saying has been correct. He called the Brandon and Hoke firings well before they happened. Call me dumb but what's a guy going to do!

I really apperciate the responsible reporting on this blog.  Sam's responsible too, but I appreciate the thorough parsing of what's credible, what's possible and what possibly could be the sources and motivatoins of some of the rumors & reporting.  One of the best things that has been included in these and other posts are reminders that are darn near a compilation of what others have said previously, where they're wrong, and where they've contradicted themselves.

I've been a little schizo duing the search, allowing myself flights of fancy ("It's happening") while keeping at least a long, sometimes slacked tether to the ground.

It seems to me that some of the "reporting" is simply guys talking to someone who is nominally close to the situation (agents, guys in front offices, guys in the NFL office), allowing them to speculate/pull stuff out of their asses, and then reporting that "A knowledgable source told me ..."  It would be fine if the report was, hey so and so thinks .... or if it was, "who knows, but no one has ever voluntarily left the NFL before when they had options." Not so fine if the report makes it sound something firmer than that, however.  I wonder what category these guys fall into:

1.  Cynical, self-aware jerks who know the game, but damn it, they have quotas.

2.  Mediocre, lazy slobs who are unmotivated to go any further than filing their word count.  On hearing stuff they think is true anyway, well it's probably as true as most stuff that gets reported.  And if they hear the same speculation from two different people, heck it's gotta be true, even if it's obvious to the outside world that they're all just talking to one another.

3.  Utter morons who'll believe anything said in a deep enough baritone.

I stopped off in Ann Arbor today, and I swear to God, you cannot swing a dead cat around town without someone telling you "I talked to (person X) just now, and it's happening," or "(Former player Y) is insisting this is happening," or "I know it's happening."

The echo chamber is downright deafening in a way that only happened around Les Miles in 2008. Long story short, I'm terrified.

The NFL guys are talking to 49ers reps and David Dunn, both of which want Harbaugh in the NFL next year.  They are hoping to build a compelling case for an NFL team to throw lots of money and picks in the hopes that JH stays in the NFL next year.  They will be wrong, but only because their sources are playing them.
