Is it more beneficial to part ways now or after the season?

No team will trade for him and give up draft picks when they know he will not be in SF next season. Harbaugh is in the last year of his contract I believe.
December 14th, 2014 at 8:39 PM ^
Harbaugh has one year left after this one. That's why it's been such a big deal all year long. If he could go anywhere he wanted after this season, his relationship with the 49ers wouldn't matter. But because the 9ers can control to what, if any, NFL team he goes to next year if they choose not to fire him, and for what compensation in return, it's a big deal. And it's why Michigan has a real chance, because he can't be stopped from going to AA -- that's completely up to him.

Who could downvote that? Jim Harbaugh + FlightAware reference + fuzzy winter hat = the greatest gif in the history of gifs.

Needs more Harbaugh.

No no... hands on, Mr. Ross. Imagine this <spreads hands towards the sky>... THE STEPHEN ROSS ENDOWED COACH OF MICHIGAN FOOTBALL, Jim Harbaugh. It's got a certain ring to it, no?

Mr. Ross had better well endow the next coach.

If he lets on that he's interested in the NFL the 49er's will hold on until the better end in order to receive compensation via trade.
Best case scenario: Harbaugh (and hopefully Hackett) work directly with 49er's to expedite his hiring at Michigan.

Agree. If he wants to leave the NFL, then the 49ers front office has no reason to wait to make that move. However, if they still believe there is any chance they get value for him, this will drag on.

SF can save money on the buyout they'd owe him if they fired him by letting Michigan sign him. That's assuming he's not staying in the NFL.
