It puts some indirect pressure on harbaugh, and if he doesn't come, we have someone else lined up.

This is good news for anyone who has Les as their #2 or 3.

should be any Michigan fan with an ounce of sense

Honestly I want Harbaugh but any of the coaches being talked about would be equally as good or better coaches, except Greg Schiano. Cutcliff is at a great school has great credentials and would be great hire same with Les, Mora and so on. We should be proud to be fans of a team that can and will pull a great coach.

i think we can all agree that this coaching search is 100% better than the previous two. let's just be patient and close the deal!

Wow. You guys are actually insulting the poster for saying that the media can force Harbaugh's hand, in a thread about Miles potentially coaching at Michigan?

Any chance that Hackett is reaching out to Les Miles to see if Les is interested in personally introducing Harbaugh at the press conference?

There is a huge difference between "reaching out" and "offered".

Les is a great coach!
December 9th, 2014 at 8:23 PM ^
I heard Michigan has offered Les the job, but it's a non-commitable offer.
December 9th, 2014 at 9:39 PM ^
It's a Greyshirt offer.
If Harbaugh says no we'll pay Les next year.
December 9th, 2014 at 8:28 PM ^
This is good. He is one of four guys who can immediately compete against Dantonio, Meyer and SEC coaches. I'd take him in a heart beat.
December 9th, 2014 at 8:29 PM ^
Les is a great option behind Harbaugh. Has gone 1-1 in MNC games, wins 70% of his SEC games (in the SEC West, toughest division in the country) and wins 78% overall.
I can't imagine he'd be here longer than 5-7 years but I think he'd provide much needed stability and then he can retire while his successor is groomed.
December 9th, 2014 at 8:47 PM ^
I liked your first paragraph. But your second seems to have a scale issue. You realize this program has been unstable for about 7 years now? How would another coaching transition in 5 to 7 years offer stability? After the past 7 years, Michigan needs a guy who has the potential of being here for 15-20 years. He may not be here that long, but he needs to at least have the potential to offer longer-term stability.

December 9th, 2014 at 9:25 PM ^
First, you might want to look up the word 'potential.' Second, you might want to actually read a post before commenting on it. Third, its rare for someone to be at the same job for 15 to 20 years, after making it to the highest level? Really? Look up CEO statistics. Most of people at the highest level have been there 15 to 20 years. Look no further than Hackett. Do you know why you hear about a CEO moving from one company another company? Because its not the norm.

Les is a cool dude & a long time Mich guy. I like the idea out of respect, if not for anything ...& to keep him as #2 option.

San Webb is highly thought of, and respected, and in the past, he has broken a great deal of recruiting news, but, considering the situation now; with Sam having seen his longtime ties to the football program (Fred Jackson) severed, and let us not kid ourselves, Sam has made a good living for quite a few years off of this connection, and from it, he has been given the inside scoop on alot of things, but now, seeing his connection severed, and his business in peril, he has been acting rather strangely, from fighting with, and being hard on the Beaver, freaking out over fans cancelling his website, to acting like Brandon in an e-mail dispute with a subscriber, could it be possible that Sam is just throwing a bunch of shit against the wall, and hoping something will stick to try and save his business ?
This is merely a hypothesis, don't freak out, the contacts may even be true, but this is meaningless, Harbaugh will not decide until the 49ers season is over, or until he is fired. You will hear rumors over the next three weeks, and people will make up crap to advance their own agendas, but unless Harbaugh says himself publicly that he doesn't want the job, he is the number one candidate.

Where is the post for Michigan officially reaches out to harbaugh? It has been 1 rumor after another nothing official yet.
It's Christmas time, we will wait till January 4th, 2015 or sooner for Jim. No Rush!
December 9th, 2014 at 10:25 PM ^
you have no idea what you're talking about. Anywhere there is a program alum Sam has a contact.
December 9th, 2014 at 8:38 PM ^
swim lanes. For it to be swim lanes (plural) you need to be reaching out to more than one candidate.
If we weren't reaching out to more than one coach I'd be worried.

here in Ann Arbor.
He can groom his successor(s) in these 10 years, and we won't have the excitement of "CC" again!

It is wise for UM to gather top candidates not only as a back up plan but also to pressure Harbaugh to make a choice sooner rather than later. UM can tell him truthfully that a delay will cause them to lose out on several of these coaches due to contract extensions as well as mess up their recruiting class.
That time pressure often facilitates negotiations, and it may be needed for many other reasons. Even if Harbaugh is quite interested in UM, he might want to delay so that he has more negotiating leverage. This is a complex negotiation which could involve a decision by SF to let him go, seek monetary compensation from him or UM or (with the NFL) even draft picks.
FWIW, there are also supposedly restrictions on his current ability to be contacted by NFL teams, and it may be hard for him to get his questions answered now. He would need to decide whether he wants to go to a lousy NFL team that is losing draft picks to get him. He would need to gauge whether to refuse to go to a team if picks are lost and at what point this would drive him to choose UM. He might need to weigh such factors also with the very real possibility that a team, like Oakland, will move from the Bay Area. Also, a HC opening must arise in NFL teams (maybe even in Oakland, since the owner maintains that the interim coach is a candidate for HC on this horrible but improving team). In any case, the longer Harbaugh delays making a decision, the better he can resolve uncertainties, the more teams there are that could come into play and the more time he has to play one against the other--including UM. To allow him to delay as much as he wants would probably hurt rather than aid UM's chance to get him.

2007 - - According to a book and reports I recently read. Jim Harbaugh was not really contacted and although there was a short meeting with Les Miles back then, the search abruptly went another direction with a hire of Rich Rod. (Lloyd Carr) recommended this hire or suggested or demanded not quite sure on the wording with this.
2011 - - Rich Rod was fired on January 5, 2011 and although rumored that offers were made etc. and being turned down by Harbaugh's- plural - and again maybe this did or did not happen this way, but Jim Harbaugh signed with 49ers on Jan. 7 2011 this deal didn't happen overnight, they had abviously been talking and negotiating prior to this date. All I could find about John is he turned it down, no verification that he was ever offered.
Regardless from my research and reading and it is all still out there with all of the dates, meeting's, press conferencees, etc.
SIMPLY PUT!
A D (Dave Brandon) ----FUMBLED ALLOOTTTT!
2014 - - Can we get it right. We needed to give Brady Hoke a Classy Exit and have a cooling off period...were in this period right now. A little time to Remember the Great Guy that he is and put a little time between him and the next Coach.
Jim Harbaugh:
We know he has not denied anything. Which is better than a NO. We know he is at least thinking about it...
It is a hard decision: Maize N Blue is tugging at the Heart Strings and than the other option is another NFL team somewhere, not sure which one and/or for how long. Michigan is secure for as long as he wants (7-8 years) at least or close to it before he heads back to the NFL or maybe he stays with Michigan once we get him here.
Once again in Ann Arbor all of the stars are aligning for Jim Harbaugh to be the next Coach and possibly an athletic director that won't drop the ball and from what I can tell it is nearly 100% of the Fans are on board with Harbaugh. No buts, no maybes, just Harbaugh.
I hate to say this but The Team, The Team, The Team needed Niners to lose and not make the playoffs and they just lost to the Raiders, I call this Fate. Woodson intercepts the Final Ball to Seal that deal. Fate or maybe just Charles Woodson.
Psychic Medium: Bo, Michigan Needs Help! One Word: HARBAUGH

And his agent, as the piece states, Miles' agent was reached out to, not Miles. We all know that Hackett hired a headhunting firm to line up candidates for the Head Coaching job, It simply looks like the firm contacted Miles' agent to see if there is any interest. This is something that any competent search commitee would be doing anyway IMHO -non story.
