Devin Gardner and Jake Ryan named team captains
*finally*.
Also from the Bust-
Michigan president Mark Schlissel also here, Jim Hackett about to introduce him, calling it rare for a president to be here.
— Kyle Bogenschutz (@KyleBogie) December 8, 2014
Schlissel also thanks Brady Hoke. Days Hoke reached out to him for support and warmth during tough times this semester.

Devin Gardner's final comment at Bust, a tip of the hat to Bo "I stayed, and I will live the rest of my life as a champion."

— MVictors (@MVictors) December 9, 2014
Jake Ryan praised Greg Mattison for all he taught him --- Mattison looked extremely emotional, as he has all evening at Bust.

Michigan voted on captains after OSU game. Hoke: I felt there was too much entitlement from the year before.

Good choices. Would it have made a difference if they had been named before the season?

Both of these guys deserved the honor, but really feel this should have been done at the start of the season as what meaning does it have now to the team.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
The meaning is probably still huge for them. Their team voted that they were the guys that led this team all season, and they earned the honor of being the captains. Who cares if you get to carry the title of captain all year? They still led as captains, and they are being recognized for it. I like the idea of the players having to earn it. Hoke said he did it because there was entitlement. Not sure why anybody has an issue with this, honestly.

...and before people complain about it not happening before the season. Realize that Frank Clark would've likely been a preseason captain.
It didn't work, wasn't the best method, but in the end...it got the correct answer.
Season's over. Coach is fired. Let's move on.

Captains have traditionally been voted on by their teammates, not chosen by the coaches.
December 8th, 2014 at 10:03 PM ^
Yes, but in that case Clark would have had his captaincy stripped from the record upon his dismissal, as happened to James Whitley in 2000.
But anyway, I think Ryan would been voted over him.

It wasn't the margin, it was the trend. Plus, the continued failure to pay attention to details like having 11 players on the field.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:28 PM ^
a classic Brady Hoke achievement. naming captains after you have lost your job.
can I get my neg points revoked for being correct about Hoke? My hundred million neg points came from my stating, after the Bellomy debacle at Nebraska, that Hoke was in over his head.

Sometimes, it's not what you say ,but how you say it...

You weren't mod-negged because someone thought you were wrong.
You were Bolivia'd for being a cock. Kind of undercuts your argument.

maybe the poster has learned and moved on. Second chances and all, right? How long are Bolivian exiles intended to last?

Jake Ryan is only the 13th player in Michigan history to be named team captain more than once.
The 8th in the last 90 years.

I always liked Hagerup. When everybody was still in their fuck this team, fuck this coach, fuck this staff, fuck this athletic director stuff during the season he wrote an amazing letter to his teammates that I really liked.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
Thanks.
Also, this is the last time I'll plug this but PLEASE bookmark and vote every day for Devin Gardner. The Senior Class award captures who they are off the field, so no need to quibble about what he did or didn't accomplish as quarterback.
http://www.seniorclassaward.com/vote/football_2014/
Voting closes on the 15th at midnight Central time. Please help Devin capture the fan vote. He is right, he was all about being the champion and will forever be. He has gained ground in this poll against several of the challengers but still has a ways to go to catch up to JaCorey Shepherd of Kansas, Ameer Abdullah of Nebraska and Chris Conley of Georgia. Vote on your home computer, work computer, and any other device you can get to until the 15th.

And I think you can plug this as many times as you feel like plugging it until someone important tells you to stop.

This team will miss Jake Ryan. He obviously was one of the leaders in the locker room.
I could see Jack Miller being one of the leaders next year. He always seemed to be the one who spoke to the media on behalf of his team after games this year. After some of the bad losses, he was the only player to speak. Plus, he has persevered through some issues on the field and turned into a decent lineman.

I mean, you have Schlissel and Hackett there with a bunch of the employees they just let go. Glad they could have one last get together as a gang with the players, but it seems uncomfortable

I am very glad to hear how our football players got to enjoy their end of year celebration. They deserve a lot of respect for their hard work and perseverence. Even though their efforts did not achieve the level of success we hoped for. The lessons they learned in sports will be with them forever.
Looking forward, we are probably one great coach away from being among the champions again. You can play it straight, enjoy friendships, and still be a winner. Why be in the game unless you are trying your best to win?
December 8th, 2014 at 10:30 PM ^
I clicked this thread fully intending to leave a snarky anti-Hoke "who cares at this point" comment. The tweets about the players made me realized that such a comment would have been wrong and, well, just plain mean. The players obvioulsy care and, at this point, that is all that really matters. It was a nice way for Devin and Jake to go out. Good for them.

Regardless of the circumstances this year and without any aspersions to those involved I would hope that Captains are named in a more traditional manner going forward.
December 8th, 2014 at 10:45 PM ^
Out of curriosity, Who is the one who negs WD every post regardless of content? I havent seen a WD post since the email incident where he didnt have x pos and at least 1 neg.

Yeah, seems rather juvenile. At the end of the day i dont care, Ive just been wondering who actually takes the time to do it.

voting down a post you don't have the time or inclination to respond to, I get. Sometimes you look at a post, think about responding and just say, fuck it.
Serial downvoting is an act of unbelievable petulance. The beating of your tiny fist is a sad, sad thing.

on this board who do not appreciate WD's contributions. Agree or disagree with him, but I think he's one of our top contributors lately. I don't get the hate. It's not like he is dickish or controversial.

"a guy whose only crime is he likes Michigan apparel." Some people are just dicks - but WD isn't one of them.
