OT- Tigers v Twins, final regular season series.
It's the last regular season series of the year, let's see if we can keep the momentum after yesterday's binocular fiasco.
Detroit
- Max Scherzer
- 17-5, 2014.1 IP with a 3.19 ERA
- FIP: 2.86
- K/9: 10.20
-
BB/9: 2.48
Minnesota
- Trevor May
- 3-5, 39.2 IP and a horrific 8.39 ERA
- FIP: 4.64 (much better showing here of actual talent than above number)
- K/9: 8.39
- BB/9: 4.76
On paper this looks like a tremendous advantage pitching wise for Detroit, but as they've shown in the past the Twins seem to hit our starters better than all others. The Magic number right now is at 3 with a chance with some luck to be down to a single game by the end of the night. Eat em up Tigers, eat em up!

We won and KC lost. I'm so confused.
September 25th, 2014 at 6:14 PM ^
Chris Sale has some problems upstairs.

Never forget:

I have mlb.tv and re-watched the game with the Sox broadcast team (you know -- Hawk Harrelson).
They had a completely different take, saying Sale was pointing at the "scoreboard" (of which there is 'none' in center field, btw).
Even after Kinsler's little show at 2nd, base, they still were in denial. I think the same video feed is used for both broadcasts. Interesting look, if you are interested.

LET'S GO TIGERS
CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP

This would be what, back-to-back-to-back-to-back AL Central Division titles? Even for a fairly high payroll team, the consistency -- at least in terms of getting to the playoffs -- is impressive.
September 25th, 2014 at 6:20 PM ^
It should be noted though, our division has been pretty weak for a while now.
September 25th, 2014 at 6:22 PM ^
The more people say this the less true it actually is. 3 teams fighting for playoff spots, only the AL West and NL Central are truly better divisions.
September 25th, 2014 at 6:24 PM ^
Central's definitely been picking up this last year or so, but over the last half decade it's been fairly weak outside of the Tigers.
September 25th, 2014 at 6:23 PM ^
Yes, ever since the Twins and White Sox fell from their mid-aughts success, the division has been pretty brutal. At least the Royals seem to have a bright future now.
September 25th, 2014 at 6:50 PM ^
can become a free agent, so that future might rest on him.
September 25th, 2014 at 7:11 PM ^
I want the Tigers to sign Sheilds this offseason. He can be our Scherzer replacement.
September 25th, 2014 at 7:47 PM ^
doing that though. They need a big bat to replace Victor and probably an outfielder for Torii. I think they'd feel comfortable with Price, Verlander, Sanchez, Porcello + random rookie next year.
September 25th, 2014 at 8:13 PM ^
This is baseball, though. We can have it all. Especially if it looks like Carrera is the guy who replaces Torii in the everyday line up.
September 25th, 2014 at 8:28 PM ^
any reason to pencil him in as a regular. In fact, it wouldn't at all surprise me to see him out of the Tiger organization by spring unless Erie or Toledo don't have enough warm bodies to start their seasons.
September 25th, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
Carrera is not an everyday option. He doesn't hit nearly enough. There's a reason he's 28 and still can't crack a major league roster for a full season, let alone play everyday.
If Steven Moya can cut down on the strikeouts, he could be a viable option in a year or two. There is also Tyler Collins. Both of them are in line ahead of Carrera.
EDIT: Or you could just read what rob wrote, right above this.
September 25th, 2014 at 9:56 PM ^
i would go with moya over carrera. that said, i would like moya to spend a couple months in AAA first next year. i could see hunter staying on for one more year.
i could also see the tigers try to sign victor, but if not, sign a slugging lefty !B/DH. and a possible platoon with a righty HR hitter.
September 25th, 2014 at 8:21 PM ^
I really don't think the Tigers let V-Mart get away, crazy things can happen but it'd be a huge blow if they did lose him.
September 25th, 2014 at 6:46 PM ^
for the Twins 17-1 finish to 2010 it would be 5 in a row.
September 25th, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
Damn did you really need to go there? I had that tucked away.
September 25th, 2014 at 7:20 PM ^
That was 2009.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:18 PM ^
and that gawd-awful HHH Dome they played in for far too long.
They killed us in the late 80s also.
September 25th, 2014 at 7:18 PM ^
It just doesn't feel the same without Brandon Inge here, you know? Like something's missing.
September 25th, 2014 at 9:58 PM ^
more strikeouts
September 25th, 2014 at 7:21 PM ^
Binoculars my ass, Victor has been locked in all year.
September 25th, 2014 at 7:29 PM ^
the Tigers just got two runs while I jumped over here to see what was going on. Thought I just blinked.
EDIT: Guess I was blinking through my binoculars. VMart just homered.
September 25th, 2014 at 7:30 PM ^
We HAVE to have Binocular Night at Comerica Park the first time CWS is in town next year.
September 25th, 2014 at 7:36 PM ^
As long as we do it on a night Sale is starting. Would be awesome.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:20 PM ^
we may have found Sale's kryptonyte.
We should have a bunch of folks in center field make different "signs" every time a Tiger batter is at the plate.
Sale would freaking lose it.
September 25th, 2014 at 8:19 PM ^
Miggy.
3-0, bottom 4.
September 25th, 2014 at 8:31 PM ^
got back on the awesome track tonight. He needed it after the 4K day he had (even tho he did have a SacFly RBI) in yesterday's game.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:21 PM ^
He is really gearing up for the post-season this year, I can feel it.
Miggy really looks good lately. And I watch every game on television, so I'm an expert.

The twins mount a 2 out rally out of nowhere....
September 25th, 2014 at 8:36 PM ^
Obviously I'd rather it be 3-0 right now, but it will be interesting to see Sanchez pitch in a tight game... assuming Max can get out of it here with a lead.
September 25th, 2014 at 8:56 PM ^
September 25th, 2014 at 9:31 PM ^
Davis with an RBI double. 4-2 Tigers. And then Davis is caught trying to steal 3rd.
September 25th, 2014 at 9:37 PM ^
Last week we got Angel Hernandez umpiring a series. Now we got Fat Joe West working this? In the middle of the pennant race? Wow.
September 25th, 2014 at 9:53 PM ^
there's only 33,077 at the park tonight. I would be there if I weren't going to the Adirondacks.
September 25th, 2014 at 9:59 PM ^
here we go...
September 25th, 2014 at 10:04 PM ^
finally an easy inning for him; bottom of the order not withstanding.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:05 PM ^
Pretty clean 9th.
Magic number 2. Detroit clinches a tie with a KC loss tonight. They are 3-3 in the 6th right now.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:05 PM ^
1,2,3 9th for Nathan. Time to turn the attention to the KC/Chi WS game.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:11 PM ^
jizzed all over the Twins tonight. Miggy and JV getting hot at the right time -- I like this team going into the post season.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:19 PM ^
Tigers magic number.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:19 PM ^
Never rooted for the Yankess before, but this is Jeter's last game, I live in NYC, and he's a Michigan Man. And they're out of it so why not let them win?
So the Yankees have been ahead, all the commentator small talk in the late innings has been whether they'll keep Jeter in for the last inning or let him get his big bows first, since he's already showed a bit of emotion (according to the coms), and then they bring in the reliever. Two runs tying the game. So Jeter has to wait.
This of course happened right after Nathan closed up nicely.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:22 PM ^
on MLB. The final home game for "The Captain."
Can't blame you, brother.
September 25th, 2014 at 10:22 PM ^
I'd love to know who conjured up THAT ending.
