Hypothetical 2015 Coaching Candidates

Submitted by Yeezus on

I must admit I watched that game on Saturday night and wasn't even really that mad.  The state of the football program the last 7 years has made me numb to the pain.  Hoke seems like a wonderful guy and is an excellent recruiter - but it should be clear to everyone by now he's in over his head as our coach.

If this season stays in the dumpster (or as a mound of eternal flaming tires) - what coaches would hypothetically be out there to give us hope heading into 2015?

Harbaugh 1 and Harbaugh 2 will always be thrown around - but beyond them, is there anyone with ties to Michigan that would represent a "solid" choice the fanbase could unite behind?  I'm struggling to come up with other names - and that's a damn shame since Bo should have left a tree of many disciples that could take this program well into the mid-21st century.  But it seems as if most of those flames have died out post-Moeller and Carr.

That has nothing to do with it. LDS' attachement to BYU is what Notre Dame fans mistakenly percieve all Catholic's attachment to ND to be.

I would eat a bag of jalapeno peppers with nothing to drink in between if Mendenhall ever voluntarily leaves BYU for another coaching job.

(all those negative points I carrry come from dissing Hoke, starting with the Nebraska game he blew by not having Gardner ready to back up injury plagued Denard.)

Lets look at the "Hoke is a great recruiter" myth.   He is in his 4th season.  Where are the junior/sophomore/ freshman studs he has supposedly brought in?   do you see a defensive player with the impact of Joey Bosa or Adolphus Washington?   look at the mess on our offensive line, loaded with "top recruits".  the only "star"  performerHoke has brought in is Funchess........until we see what Peppers has or has not got.

Where would Hoke be if he did not bring in Mattison?

Has anyone noticed that even with a year off and inheriting a 1-11 team, RichRod has put together an Arizona team that is now better than Michigan?

Hoke's three years show us getting worse each year.   This team has no fire. The ND debacle was another program all time low.

If Michigan somehow gets pitted against them in the bowl season, I will be nervous that entire game. Rich Rod might have succeeded here if his DC from WVU would have followed... now he has left WVU to reunite with RR in Arizona... that 3-3-5 that doomed us, could also beat us right now I'm afraid of.

by firing Brandon and poaching Mark Hollis.  Maybe Michigan would then go back to Nike and WJR.

I know he wasn't responsible for that maneuver, and he has made subtle hints about his displeasure with Adidas, but I could see Brandon inking a deal with Puma, Under Armor or even Pony if they ponied up the cash (pun intended).

Everything sucks right now.

I don't know how much he's involved with recruiting, but if he is the guy finding all of these gems out of the 2-3star pile for State, then Narduzzi is easily the best candidate among the viable ones.   The Harbaughs are not going to enter the world of no life - 365 day recruiting if they can avoid it.  Neither will any of the cushy ESPN guys like Cowher or Gruden.

Narduzzi is the perfect hire, very much like plucking Bo from Woody.  The only downer on the NarDozer is how the Oregon Ducks humbled his work Saturday.

You all do realize Harbaugh will recieve NFL offers in the neighborhood of 12-15 million a year. You'd have to guarantee him 60+ million over 5 years just to get him to listen.  The University has deep pockets but not like Jerry Jones.

I really think we are screwed as fanbase for a while folks.  I've been a Michigan fan since 1979, when my step-dad introduced me to Michigan football, and my passion for Michigan runs deep.  But I'm reaching a breaking point, at least as far as football.  Let's be honest here.  Take off all rose-colored glasses and pretenses.  Since Bo retired, Michigan has won exactly eight Big Ten titles, only 4 of which are outright.  So in the last 25 years, that's one championship every three years or so.  And none since 2004.  Yes, we had that magical 1997 year, and I think for many that clouds our judgment and makes us think Michigan was more elite that it really was, even in 1990s.  The 90s were filled with great OSU teams that we managed to often derail, but outside 1997 no real "great" Michigan teams.

So that's it.  25 years of mostly good to mediocre teams, with the last 8 now taking us from mediocrity to outright poor play. We are where we are.  I for one have a tough choice to make.  I love Michigan football like a child of mine, but it's terribly rough for me to watch them suck.  I'm reaching the final grieving stage for the passing of the Michigan that once was  - acceptance - but I'm not there yet.  I watch these games and I'm filled with anger.  All the talk, all the promises, and 2014 Michigan looks identical to 2013 Michigan.  And the people in charge look clueless to fix it.  And you have to wonder, is it really, solely coaching, or is there some type of cancer eating underneath all of this?  Greg Mattison did not suddenly become a terrible DC, nor - if we are honest here - did Greg Robinson the moment he set foot on Michigan's campus.  Yet watching Michigan's defense on Saturday was nearly identical to watching it in 2013.  The problems that exist on both sides of the ball remain the same with only minimal improvement.  I'm not sure what the causes are, but I suspect the infighting in the Michigan fanbase, the inability to decide what we want Michigan to be, is the root cause of the current malaise.  And it's not going to get better soon I don't think.  Granted we have (and will have) talent.  But when there's some unwritten rule that Michigan is supposed to win a CERTAIN way and no one can even define for sure what that way is, we are in trouble.  Is it the Lloyd Car way, the pro-style offense with the drop back passer and the balanced rushing attack?  Is that what Michigan football is?  Is it Bo's option attack, which to a certain degree RichRod brought back even though it was labeld contratry to what Michigan football really 'is all about'?

It's really discouraging to me how RichRod was treated from the moment he got to Michigan.  Here he was an offensive football savant and from the moment he was hired we were always reminded he was not a "Michigan Man", which of course no one can define because it means something different to everyone who says it.  He got little support and while he made his own mistakes for sure, I imagine things might have turned out differently if he had received full fan, alumni, and administration support up front (like maybe paying Casteel the less than $300k he wanted...which is peanuts compared to what we are paying Mattision).  So then we turned to a backup Michigan man because we couldn't get the guy we really wanted (Harbaugh) and the other guy who maybe could have made it work (Les Miles) inspires a lot of hatred around here.  So we got Brady Hoke, a .500 career coach, mainly because he's a good guy and coached here before.  And shockingly, it isn't going to work out.  To me this ND game was Hoke's Richrod PSU moment.  The game when I and many others realized he just couldn't get it done.  All optimism - at least for me - is gone.  Maybe as Bronxblue says we should just let Brady get us back to mediorce+ (if he can do that) and THEN hire someone better.  Who knows.  I for one don't think I'll be watching this season.  I can't take the pain anymore.

But *when* we go looking for a coach again, we must jettison this "Michigan Man" BS.  John Beilein had no previous ties to Michigan but I think he's worked out splendidly.  But based on the "ties to Michigan" criteria, he should never have been hired in the first place.  Let's just all agree what we want someone of good character who is a good coach and get rid of this idea that the new coach has to somehow "get" Michigan and tell us how "great" we are, even when the evidence shows we are not anymore.  We need someone to *make* us great, not sycophantically kiss our collective asses as Brady always does with his “this is Michigan” emptiness.  Sadly, I think this is impossible for our current fractured fan base and the AD will have to find someone else with these mysterious "ties" to Michigan and we'll be screwed yet again.  So we all must decide, can we take the pain?

End rant.

to the point where I was actually dreading the 2010 season.

2011 was a mirage.  2012, '13 and '14 scream a discouraging trend.

I'm beyond acceptance - I'm feeling like Michigan's best days are behind her.

Dan Dierdorf was quoted as saying that Michigan is years away from getting back to the level they used to play at.

I can't even get mad after a loss like Saturday evening.

I *wish* I were there.  Most of the summer, I didn't follow any football-related stuff, but then as the season approached I listened to the hype again.  Brian's preview made me optimistic, especially on defense.  But I think at the core the D still can't pressure the QB.  And how can we expect them to really improve when the OLines they go against in practice are mediocre at best?  This team won't get over the hump until the Oline is good again.  And who knows when that will be.

Dierdorf is spot on.  This team has so many flaws that were exposed on Saturday, and the same flaws as last year.  The Oline is marginally improved but should improve during the year given scheme and the age of the players.  And that's the key to me.  But a *really* good line is probably at least two years away, two years of watching painful games.

I stepped away once before for a couple of years during the Moeller era when it became clear the team was completely disorganized and wasn't improving; it was degrading.  My sanity returned when I stopped watching.  I feel like we're in the same position again.  I really don't think firing Hoke will accomplish anything at this stage.  Let;s just let the OLine mature and see how that affects the team.  Any new coach would have the same issues with the Oline.  I don't think Brady is the right guy at all, but are we prepared for a new coach and new systems *again* that the players must learn?  Will this really be progress?  Man accepting mediocrity is hard.

The problem with giving up on Michigan is it is very hard to do so when we continue to have top 10 recruiting classes.  There will always just be an expectation level.  If anything, that's what separates Hoke from RR.  RR recruited very poorly.  Hoke has brought studs to the table, and the talent is obviously there.  The problem is the coaching.  Kelly came into the game after having spent a good 40 days of his life scheming around Nuss's offense back when ND played Bama for the NC game, so he probably had many ideas going in (Nuss was the OC at Bama then I believe?).  Mattison once again generated zero pass rush and had his secondary unprepared to take away slant passes.  Watch the VT game and see how their defense dogged Barrett and you'll see how it's supposed to be done.

And for the life of me I don't know how Funk is still employed.

Problem is, as long as we keep recruiting this well, it's impossible to write off this program.  We'll still end up with 8 wins this year now that NW is a tire fire.  The key games will just be Minny and Penn State, who we get at home.  All is not lost, but Hoke must once again look to make coordinator changes come year end.

Doubt he goes anywhere.

Art Briles and Jim Harbaugh are the dream candidates.

After that, Craig Bohl from Wyoming (via NDSU) might be a home run.

After that, I'm voting for Nussmeier. He's a rising star, regardless of last week, and is an offensive innovator.

There is a lot of season left, and I hope it turns around, but does anyone think if we lose to MSU and OSU that Hoke is actually still here? With that said:

1) Jim Harbaugh

2) John Harbaugh

3) Les Miles

4) Kevin Summlin

5) Art Briles

6) someone with NFL roots (ex. Jim Mora to UCLA)

I don't think it gets past #3.  Don't think Jim will happen.  I think John is a toss up.  I think Les comes though.  I hope somehow Tyrone Wheatley joins the staff too.  Feel like he would be a beast recruiter and potential down the road HC.

I almost want to flip John Harbaugh and Les Miles, or at worst 2A and 2B... I guess I'm just eager for some change... With that said, I'd take anyone of the top 3. I just can't imagine a world where Michigan goes to a Sumlin-like offense where we can win games 59-56...too much like that 2010 Illinois game. Art Briles is a Texas (state) guy. I just can't see him leaving that state at all.

I like your list. Here are a couple of other's I'd throw out into the mix.

Raheem Morris (ex-Buccanners HC)

Paul Chryst (Pitt HC)

Kyle Whittingham (Utah HC)

Todd Haley (ex-Chiefs HC)

Josh McDaniels (ex-Broncos HC)

Rob Chudzinski (ex-Browns HC)

Harold Goodwin (ex- U of M Player, OC of Cardinals)

Kirby Smart (Alabama DC)

Wow, you give up 28 points in a half to Oregon and all of a sudden you're dropped from all the prospective head coaching lists.

Built a phenomenal OL at Central Michigan(!) and has a great OL coach. Also coached QBs and transformed Kirk Cousins into the Big Ten's best QB at the time. He also runs a pro-style offense and runs it very well. I watched CMU's last two games against Chat and Purdue and they were impressive. It wouldn't surprise me if Enos won the MAC this year.

Only downside is that he's an MSU grad and that might (read: would) rub people the wrong way possibly. But honestly, after all the "Michigan Man" b.s. over the years, does it really matter? He's competent.

I literally laughed out loud when I read this. The CMU fan base has been screaming for Enos to lose his job for 3 years now. Yes, they beat two terrible teams to start the year, but he is in NO WAY major conference coach material. He would be an absolute joke of a hire.

I don't think JH would come here but people need to realize that coaching college football, even with recruiting, alums, etc, is still probably less time consuming as what pro coaches do during the season.

How about Joe Gibbs? For a guy with three super bowl rings, I think we could get him pretty cheap.

Or Jay Paterno. Top coordinator who oversaw a lot of success for a Big Ten program and I don't believe anyone has jumped on him yet. HOW IS THIS GUY UNEMPLOYED?

I hope you're kidding about Jay Paterno. There's several reasons no one has picked up the phone and called him to enquire about his services Completely disregarding the fact that he'd be an incredibly polarizing figure with still believing his Dad is a saint, the Penn State locker room seemed to have some real issues with him. I remember reading from Fourth and Long that Michael Mauti despised the guy and seemed to play favorites with his QBs.

I wouldn't want the guy roaming our sidelines. Not worth the headache.

Anyone other than Hoke I'm sick of the uhhhhs and welllll and just sounding like he doesn't know what's going on. He doesn't have any sense of urgency on the sidelines and the damn clapping. Send him back to SDSU. He was mediocre before he got here and he's still mediocre here. My vote Harbaugh... Pick one.

shortly thereafter.

That Oregon game was a mirage - they barely beat UTSA last Thursday.

The RR hire never felt right from the get-go.  The buy-out fiasco with WVU, midweek Purdue mutiny, just general overall suckiness once conference play began.

I'm just glad that clown show is gone.

1. As ugly as last saturday was, it's too early for this talk.  But...

2. If we have to have this conversation, can we at least drop the idea that the next guy has to have some connection to the program?  We need a guy who will fit with the culture better than Rodriguez.  It's about character, not contacts.  (And if Brandon can't get his head around that, then it really is time for a new AD.)

3. Can we also get past the idea that a new coach cannot succeed without "his players"?  Good coaches either teach their system quickly or adapt to the players they have.  Bo beat OSU his first year with Bump Elliott's players.  Brady Hoke actually had his best year with Rich Rod's players.  Not saying it's time to let go of Hoke (see 1) but if Hoke cannot get this team in decent shape by the end of the year we shouldn't keep him around just to avoid a transition.
