Meta: This board needs ignore user/thread to function properly
Michigan being the subject of national and ridiculous ridicule brings all the wrong attention to this board and attracts trolls and bad faith actors. They can speak whatever inflammatory bullshit they want, but high value contributors will come around less and their input will be harder to decipher if we don't enact a means for users to block out the noise to get to the signal. It'll be a downward spiral of high quality user-generated content, which is about 28% of what makes this site great.
That's all.

if we don't enact a means for users to block out the noise to get to the signal
Huh?
October 28th, 2023 at 1:28 PM ^
Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a measure used in science and engineering that compares the level of a desired signal to the level of background noise. It is defined as the ratio of signal power to the noise power, often expressed in decibels.

As an otolaryngologist - I approve of this message.

The board needs a lot of things.
-Active threads should go to the top (even if they're - gasp - more than 3 hours old)
-Posters should get notifications when someone replies to them
-Posts with scores of -10 or worse should be folded over/grayed out
Many, many message boards have these functions. Why this community has to be trapped forever in 2008, I don't understand.
(Before someone says "It's a free site, be happy, blah blah blah" - I'd happily contribute to a KickStarter to upgrade this.)
October 28th, 2023 at 12:37 PM ^
The first is a feature, not a bug. New threads are more important to us because if you push active threads it tends to push things that piss people off to the top. The threads that don't get as much activity are usually the ones you will have a better experience with, or are more relevant. If you see a thread with over 100 replies, chances are you don't need to go near it.
Notification alerts are a sticky subject. Most of the time you do not want this. Also they're a good way to slow down the site.
-Good idea.
UPDATE
I forgot to add, if you click on your name and then click on the "Activity" tab you can see the threads you're in and whether there are new comments. If you click that you should automatically be taken to the latest reply to you if there is one.

But I WANT to argue endlessly.
October 28th, 2023 at 2:13 PM ^
NO, you don’t.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
fuck you, Sparty lover
October 28th, 2023 at 5:12 PM ^
No, YOU don't!
October 28th, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
Crappy posts with over 100 replies are great opportunities to do snark!

Snark is what got me here. OK, ok I might actually be too interested in UM football (below Conor level).
October 28th, 2023 at 12:50 PM ^
I don't want notification alerts, but it would be nice to be able to click on my own comment(s) to see if there are replies. As of now I can do that only if the comment is still on the first page (unless I'm doing something wrong)
October 28th, 2023 at 12:54 PM ^
You aren't doing anything wrong. That's the way it works.
October 28th, 2023 at 4:39 PM ^
it would be nice to be able to click on my own comment(s) to see if there are replies.
You can click on your user name, view your comments, click on the comment (open in new tab) and see if there are replies.
October 28th, 2023 at 1:27 PM ^
Unless I’m an idiot - which is entirely possible and likely - I have no idea who is replying to who most of the time.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:12 PM ^
I'm replying to you, Bluesince89.
It's harder on the phone than a computer.
If it's important to know you can collapse the comments to help see who is replying to whom.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:13 PM ^
-Active threads should go to the top
I will never understand why people consider this a good thing.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:29 PM ^
I see that I'm bucking city hall here Seth, and maybe others have different experiences, but I frequent several different websites and on every one of them thread order is based on the latest response.
Are there any stats that suggest the Mgoblog way is the preferred choice on other websites?
At least consider increasing the number of threads visible on the front page.
October 28th, 2023 at 4:02 PM ^
I'm not Seth... but it seems he's saying they made a conscious decision to go for quality over quantity. It has definitely worked, as there are far less ongoing arguments in threads now vs the previous version of the site.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:31 PM ^
I would note that TruStage is being particularly obnoxious this Saturday.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:34 PM ^
This thread currently is at -14.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
Was that "good idea" in regards to the folded/gray out for too many negs?
I would definitely support a feature that minimizes comments with too many negs.
October 28th, 2023 at 5:36 PM ^
What about a direct message feature?
October 28th, 2023 at 12:45 PM ^
These are your preferences and what you would like to have, not needs.
October 28th, 2023 at 1:38 PM ^
I blame all of the site's bugs on this vile person.
October 28th, 2023 at 1:48 PM ^
+ ad infinitum points to you!
October 28th, 2023 at 1:55 PM ^
A possibly appealing woman whom I've begun to dislike immensely. As the for the company, whatever it is they do, I'm tempted to sign up and then QUIT! That'll show 'em.
October 28th, 2023 at 1:49 PM ^
Posts with scores of -10 or worse should be folded over/grayed out
This seems like a good thing.
October 28th, 2023 at 1:58 PM ^
This board was born in 2008, from the ashes of Haloscan, and bahgawd it'll live in 2008 forever.

There is a button you can use to collapse a thread.
October 28th, 2023 at 12:51 PM ^
BTW Seth I appreciate the work this week.
October 28th, 2023 at 1:53 PM ^
Ditto. It had to be an exhaustive week from hell and it aint over yet.
October 28th, 2023 at 12:37 PM ^
Yeah like it’s going to happen now after 15 years of user suggestions
October 28th, 2023 at 12:42 PM ^
A lot of irony in this post.
October 28th, 2023 at 12:45 PM ^
Lol at the thought of improving the functionality of this site
October 28th, 2023 at 12:47 PM ^
Just an edit function for OPs, if you ask me. Fifteen-sixteen years without one is. . . slack AF.
October 28th, 2023 at 12:53 PM ^
Editing OPs was possible before the 2018 (2019?) upgrade. I think it's been said that allowing that now was a nonstarter due to security. Must be that allowing that access to the table creates a vulnerability for threat actors.
October 28th, 2023 at 2:22 PM ^
If that's the case, I apologize.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:14 PM ^
On the one hand, it is annoying. On the other hand, I do fear that after comments to an OP, if an OP changes, the comments won't make sense anymore. It happens in the comments sometimes. Maybe that's an irrational fear.
October 28th, 2023 at 12:52 PM ^
Yes, the ability to not see anything from certain posters would be much appreciated. As would a reply notification.
October 28th, 2023 at 12:55 PM ^
What did you type? I can't see it. :-)
October 28th, 2023 at 1:30 PM ^
Me neither. You think he's talking about us? Throw poop at him?
October 28th, 2023 at 2:22 PM ^
Nah, if he is we deserve it.
October 28th, 2023 at 3:06 PM ^
Yikes! Simians and marsupials. Doomed, am I. 😁
October 28th, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
Someone once made a Troll Cave extension. Not sure if that still exists.
Edit: Ha, should have read one comment below.
October 28th, 2023 at 12:54 PM ^
I'm generally happy but I came here to tout the MGoBlog Enhancer Chrome Extension complete with "Troll Cave" to hide unwanted users, though I've never used that feature. Alas, it is gone now from the Chrome Store. However, there is a current MGoBlog Extension for Chrome you can check out at this link:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mgoextension/ofgjchbbkncnajaf…
It is described like this:
A reasonable retheme of mgoblog.com
This retheme strips away the clutter of MGoBlog 3.0. During the install, you will see a notice that the extension reads data sent to and from mgoblog.com. This is necessary to block the site's default styles and javascript. No private data is read. Specific changes:
- No more banner or story tiles at the top of the page. The first thing you see is the latest post.
- Board threads listed before diaries in the sidebar.
- Few diary titles in the sidebar.
- Comment threads are more condensed and less cluttered. Board threads default to 100 comments per page.
Haven't used the latter, can't vouch for it. Just thought I'd share

Thanks! Are you aware of anything that might work with Firefox?
October 28th, 2023 at 1:25 PM ^
Unfortunately I'd just be Googling like you would! I just went with Chrome years ago and stuck with it but hopefully there's something on Firefox too.
October 28th, 2023 at 2:00 PM ^
The Mgoblog Enhancer also works with Firefox. I've had it for years. Sucks that it's not available anymore. I'll miss it when I finally get a new phone.
