So long, Angelo's.
The classic breakfast joint up on the Hill is being bought out by the University. Who was that musician that wrote that song, "We're going to Angelo's." Was that Dick Siegel?
While we're bemoaning the loss of businesses in that corner of the university world, please remember to pour one out for Steve's Lunch, a better and less pretentious breakfast joint in the 70's. Nothing topped their mushroom, sprouts, and cheese omelette with hash browns.
[Edit] Always ordered with coffee and a side of rye toast...
Steve's Lunch and their bibimbops -- the stuff of legends.
Now you're talking.
84-91 here. VC, Bagel Factory, Steve's Lunch bring back good memories.
Hate to see Angelo's go. Great toast. I have a copycat of their raisin bread that I make on occasion.
I graduated in 87. Steve's Lunch and Drake's were my regulars. Drake's with their cans of Campbell's soup, very pedestrian sandwiches, and super uncomfortable wood booths.
Cannot overstate how great Steve's was.
As for understated how many people remember Lil Chef restaurant?
I think it was between Taco Bobs and Pizza Bobs
I made pizzas and waited tables at Uno's
Throw in Thano's Lamplighter (favorite hang out of the basketball team), The Whiffletree, and Bimbos too. Good eating. Forgot about Drakes ( there will never be a cool place like that again).
I didn't know how old the place was:
Eggs over-easy, hash browns and you.
I'm sorry to hear about Angelo's; I always liked that place.
The crab cakes benedict were my favorite but everything on the menu is good. Thanks for all the great breakfasts and brunches, Angelo's.
This one hurts.
Oh my... My sister took me there on "Sibling's weekend" when she was an undergrad. I went there when I was an undergrad. I took my kid's, their roommates, and their roommates parents there during their freshman move-in day.
My children - one lived on the Hill, the other at Bursley - their freshman year - would grab a bite to eat there regularly.
My wife, the kids, and I still visit occasionally, but - honestly, tend to go to Avalon, or places "downtown" for breakfast. Angelo's has incredible history and tradition - which I value greatly. The two spots for breakfast, IMO, are the A's in Ann Arbor - Angelo's and Avalon.
I'll miss it - but, appear to be fortunate, since it sounds like the formal sale won't happen until next Spring.
One of the truly great breakfast places in town. Never had a bad meal there once, and as someone in this thread, already suggested, it was the place you made your parents take you when they were in town.
Can’t blame the university for this. The owner is retiring and no one wants to take over. What can you do? Hope the owner gets to cash out and live a good, cushy retirement. They’ve earned it.
Plus the land there is very valuable and the University will gobble up any property they can get their hooks into. Parking was always kind of tight there though, for those of us who had to drive to it.
It was really good food, but maybe not quite as good as some memories suggest.
I happened to be in town and super early for my flight, so I stopped in for breakfast a few weeks ago. It was good, but not as good as I remember. 730 on a Sunday and I was one of two people in the place. Blimpy and Angelo's were staples in the late 90s when I was in a hurry to grow up and move away.
One summer I ended up having a month gap between apartment rentals, so a friend of mine told me about a friend of theirs that had a room to sublet. It was located right next door to Angelo’s. I was woken up every morning by the smell of their bread baking.
I lived in that house next to Angleos one year in the late 90's. Being able to roll out of bed and right up to the bar at Angelo's was the best.
Damn, this is sad af. I initially thought the school just bought Angelo's because they didn't have a choice, but sounds like Angelo's was going to close anyway
Well that sucks. That was the first "college" place I ever went to when I visited my older sister. I was visiting over the summer while she was living on Geddes and we walked over there the morning after I experienced my first college party at the ripe age of 15.
Time to go to Frank's.
That is a shame. Great food, sometimes brutal waits. Got in a couple of off-hours times with the MGoMom, which was awesome.
Yeah, it was iconic Ann Arbor...but the Northside Grill was better
I don’t know about that, and respectfully disagree.
We took our kids there when they were little and my daughter locked the car key in the car. I'll never forget the look of dejection on her face as she walked back inside the restaurant. She sat back down at the table, eyes downward and said, "I can see the key, sitting in the back, and the car is locked and I'm so sorry!!" and then she started bawling. She was around 8. RIP Angelo's, an Ann Arbor institution. Best breakfast around.
Not gonna lie, I wasn’t a huge fan of Angelo’s. But I’m still a little sad to see a long standing name gone.
I can't blame the family for selling - close to retirement and a good price.
But BIG YELLOW TAXI!!!
I bet the apartment above had some wonderful smells on the weekend.
One of the few places you could get homemade corned beef hash. So good...
That makes me sad
This is sad, Angelo's was one of my preferred spots when I was going to school and later on working at the hospital. Sounds like the family was ready to hang up the towel, nonetheless they will be missed!
To continue my day of unpopular opinions. I never liked Angelos. I would take my parents to fleetwood diner instead.
we hit the fleetwood when we're in town... i like the quirkiness of the place and the food is good.
I once picked up breakfast for Brian, his former wife and Ace at Angelo's the morning of UTL2 - Bevield Guilt.
Took my son there for lunch when he was 6 and visiting his little bro at Mott during one of his recoveries from heart surgery.
Always reminded of it when Dick Siegel’s song is played at the close of 94.7s Sunday Morning Over Easy. That was playing at our wedding reception while our parents and God-parents were being introduced.
hope the owner enjoys a well deserved retirement.
Ann Arbor is not the same cozy college town that it was when I was there in the early to mid 90’s. It’s now a pretty big college town, which is mostly a good thing. But I miss the old haunts like Village Corner, Moe’s, Ulrich’s, etc. Pretzel Bell was gone by the time I got to A2. I spent most of my time at the Brown Jug, Backroom, or the Rendezvous Cafe.
Angelo’s was good the half-dozen or so times that I was willing to wait but it mainly it was conveniently located near the Hill and had a cult-like following because traditional diners were few and far between with the exception of the Fleetwood, which I preferred.
I kept a bunch of menus from my days in Ann Arbor and I still have the laminated menu from Fleetwood Diner. Hippie Hash.
Not a bad idea. Good for you!
Even without the owner retirement angle, it seemed inevitable the the ever-expanding UM medical complex would eventually swallow the location. Still, sad to see it go. Haven't been there since I graduated almost 30 years ago.
Angelo's has good breakfast, but I'm glad they're selling because everyone that goes to games with me wants to go there on game day. It sucks waiting 2 hours for breakfast on the day of a game.
I always ordered the Eggs Benedict.
Hell damn fart, this bums me out to no end. My wife and I ALWAYS hit up Angelos when we're back in town. It was a favorite during my bachelor years as well. Damn. Damn.
Only went a few times because I never wanted to wait that long. Breakfast was solid but ironically I liked the burger than the breakfast if I'm being honest. As a cultural mainstay it will be missed but judged purely for the breakfast... Northside Grill is better.
*ducks*
Really sad. Was part of my football weekend routine. Loved going, except the wait.
Ugh. Another of the great ol' Ann Arbor haunts dies.
While I appreciate that change is going to happen, one of the things that makes Ann Arbor and the University great IMO is the small businesses who provided their services/product and got to have their regular clients & became part of the fabric of the society. =
Furthermore, "town culture" does not happen at a Chipotle or Buffalo Wild Wings.
Oh I miss you too China Gate!
Go Blue!
Damn! Glad i got the fried French toast when in town a couple weeks ago.
I also wasn’t a huge fan. Seemed overrated based on how much hype it would get. It tasted like a slightly better Coney Island for me.
but I agree. Sad to see a staple gone.
Sad to see it go because it's an institution. But the mythology of Angelo's was always greater than the reality: the food was just...fine. And the owner is getting a small fortune for it.
Despite the sad news, it should be noted that this is the perfect thread title.
