OT: Most Popular D1 Nickname???
The Softball team played the Utah Valley Wolverines this weekend. There are only 2 D1 schools named Wolverines. Their colors are green and gold.
Can everyone name the most popular D1 nicknames? The #1 spot has 5 schools and #2 and #3 have 4 schools each.
No cheating. No google. Just memory.
isn't the War Eagles?

I'm pretty sure no one knows the answer to this, as I don't believe there is a correct answer. There's a few stories out there that speak of an actual eagle flying over the field at a game that spawned the battle cry, as well as a couple stories that are rooted in Indian lore. I remember reading up on it a few years ago, and actually found the background fairly intersting, considering I never thought I'd give a shit about anything Auburn.
I dated a girl who attended Auburn and she explained it was in reference to a Civil War battle in which a soldier and eagle were the only survivors. The soldier later attended Auburn and took the lucky eagle with. It escaped and circled the field during a game ultimately won by AU, hence "war damn eagle." I think she also said something about the bird dropping dead as a stone during a game. I'm not sure if it was the same game though. Personally, I prefer the two wolverine mascots attempting to destroy everything (including each other) during Michigan's foray into live mascotdom.
... or the Arizona Wildcats having the slogan "Bear Down". It makes no sense to me, regardless of their explanation.
Alabama A&M, Bryant, Drake, Louisiana Tech, Samford, South Carolina State, Citadel, NC-Asheville
Off the top you have BC, EMU, Southern Miss, GA Southern...
only one Screaming Eagles
#MinnesotaState
Guessing that #1 is Eagles, and the other is Tigers
I know of one other Wolverine school. Grove City College in Pennsylvania.
The only reason I know that is because they're in the CWPA along with Michigan for Water Polo.
Here's their football helmets-
Must spend the entire spring and summer in the weight room!
Willie spends his summers getting high and playing video games.
That was drawn in 1949.
What the hell? Did a child design this?
is guaranteed to give me recurring nightmares.
At least until I'm sufficiently reassured that Addidas and Brandon won't try to pull something...
Bears, and Lions?
It's definitely the Banana Slugs.
Hoosiers?
Or wildcats...Probably wildcats.
run a 38 belly option on 2 on 2:
Crazy Italians.
one of the fllowing: bulldogs, tigers or wildcats
I teach at Mississippi State these days. In 2010 our first four opponents were Memphis, Auburn, LSU, and Georgia. Yes, nothing but Tigers and Bulldogs. It was a little repetitive.
Wildcats, Bulldogs, Tigers, Spartans(?), Eagles(?)
I always loved the nicknames that were based off of the state nickname: sooners, longhorns, jayhawks, volunteers, hawkeyes, gophers, badgers, hoosiers, wolverines etc. Nicknames like Spartans, Tigers, Bulldogs, and Wildcats don't instill the same passion.
I liked it when we were the Hurons. The Eagles sound like something that came out of marketing session so as not to offend anyone. However, if I were a real eagle and I saw the way they play football, I'd be offended. Hopefully Coach Creighton will change that.
