Harbaugh definitely knows how to leverage a situation. And hopefully he'll be successful in getting a notable QB soon in the '24 class. That tango with NFL in back to back years definitely didn't help with certain parts of recruiting and the Weiss situation, one can only guess, isn't helping either.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:00 PM ^
What leverage lol? Davis is getting visited by Osu, Clemson, and UNC this week?
January 18th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
To prompt Davis to make a decision on Michigan.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:21 PM ^
Nothing is binding for another 11 months anyways, whats the difference
January 18th, 2023 at 4:56 PM ^
Even then it ain't...
January 18th, 2023 at 5:37 PM ^
Transfer portal says nothing is binding
January 18th, 2023 at 5:37 PM ^
I think is kind of a moral gentleman’s agreement that if you are the 5* QB we are going to commit ourselves to and you commit to us then barring extenuating circumstances your commitment is firm. We are going to build our class around you.
So yes nothing is binding I think their is code there.

Money deals show a different attitude maybe?
January 18th, 2023 at 7:22 PM ^
i think rich rod had that 5 star commit pretty early too, in pryor. didn't work out well.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:27 PM ^
Pretty sure he never committed to UM
January 18th, 2023 at 10:34 PM ^
1. this was in spring 2008, which as far as QB recruiting goes is essentially the year 1746
2. pryor absolutely did not commit to michigan ???? he considered michigan, suddenly, after RR came but that's it; he'd been leaning towards OSU forever and michigan managed to make some quick progress in the couple of months between the hire and signing day (plus some, since he waited a little later to sign)
3. maybe you're thinking about the next year, when he had 4-stars kevin newsome and shavodrick beaver committed at QB and both decommitted; newsome went to PSU and never did much, and beaver went to tulsa. michigan got forcier and denard instead.
i really don't understand what possible argument you could be making here. yes, QBs do sometimes decommit, but elite QBs tend to commit early and stay committed. maybe it changes with NIL - Moore, Raiola, and the kid from Florida are all possible examples, although the first two seemingly have different reasons - but it historically hasn't been the case, and made-up examples from 2008 doesn't show us anything either way.
January 18th, 2023 at 6:06 PM ^
I’m surprised this fact isn’t stated on this board more frequently. Nothing matters until after the December signing period at the earliest. And “commitments” are now seemingly more moot than ever as the portal and NIL are completely rearranging the landscape. College football recruiting used to be a volatile cesspool. Now I’m not sure how to accurately categorize it.
A University of Florida QB commit who just signed an LOI less than a month ago allegedly wants out of it because he says the $13M in NIL he was guaranteed is now not happening?!?? Supposedly, he originally “committed” to Miami due to their NIL offer and then switched his verbal because Florida out bid them. Is a Dutch Auction about to supersede signing day?
January 18th, 2023 at 12:59 PM ^
I thought he was a lock to go to Nebraska because his father is on staff.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:01 PM ^
Wiltfong CB'd him to Georgia some time ago. He also put out an article/video today saying Davis may be visiting UNC this weekend though I admittedly didn't watch.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:09 PM ^
I believe its his Uncle not his father
January 18th, 2023 at 1:23 PM ^
You are correct. His uncle coaches for Nebraska and his father is a Nebraska alum and long term T-Rex impersonator for the Detroit Lions.
January 18th, 2023 at 4:35 PM ^
Yeah, but he wrestled Matt Millen and body slammed him as a newly drafted rookie so there is that. I have seen the video.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:02 PM ^
Get 'im Jim!!
January 18th, 2023 at 1:02 PM ^
Day, Hartline, and co are going to visit Jadyn Davis today…
Need to lock one of these guys up
January 18th, 2023 at 1:10 PM ^
Gee. i wonder what theyll be talking about.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:16 PM ^
Whether Day will be coaching OSU after he loses the game in AA this November?
January 18th, 2023 at 4:03 PM ^
Cmon. if it wasnt for a specific set of 19 plays that did not go exactly how osu wanted, they would have CLEARLY lost by only a little.
January 18th, 2023 at 11:01 PM ^
12 plays. 7 in 2021 and 5 in 2022.
January 18th, 2023 at 5:06 PM ^
It would be beautiful if Davis committed right after talking to OSU, like when those visitors in Columbus committed to Michigan shortly after The Game.
January 18th, 2023 at 5:45 PM ^
At this point a commitment at any time would be glorious
January 18th, 2023 at 1:30 PM ^
THE Foundation's baby girl?
January 18th, 2023 at 6:44 PM ^
Day will be showing JD's dad how to properly use Just For Men.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:30 PM ^
Things seem to be trending the wrong way with Davis.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:32 AM ^
I prefer Raiola at this point, with Davis now visiting UNC.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:03 PM ^
JH certainly knows how to leverage a situation, we've been witnessing that. It's definitely not boring around these parts!
January 18th, 2023 at 1:06 PM ^
Sam Webb was/is close w/ the Davis family. Interviewed his father several times already. Him saying Harbaugh’s yr by yr flirtation was negatively affecting recruiting, I assume that was coming from the horses mouth.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:23 PM ^
I’m sorry but I would expect Harbaugh to sign a long term contract now with teeth on a buyout. That should make him more stable to Michigan than most coaches. Especially Day after he gets thrashed by Michigan three years in a row.
If I am Raiola I am jumping into this recruitment when you look at the program and the depth chart. Michigan is pretty sweet opportunity for a guy that wants to be a leader.
Edit. This probably says it’s time to shit or get off the pot Jadyn.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:37 PM ^
I think there are other issues that plague Michigan than just an "opportunity." We have seen this for a long time. We had hoped having seen the success we have seen in the last two years would reap huge dividends in the recruiting side but the evidence is proving that success on the field is not translating into any type of recruiting success at all.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:05 PM ^
We had one “off” year because of Harbaugh’s serious look at the NFL. This one seems much different. There is certainly room for speculation.
I am predicting a long term buyout contact and a highly ranked 2024 class. That means we had a one year blip and I still think there is some really strong program talent from last years class.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:09 AM ^
It’s not just one off year. The NFL stuff badly hurt 2 classes and may now affect a 3rd. Not great Bob.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:12 PM ^
Recruiting isn't just about HS commitment anymore, establishing a relationship may help if that recruit hits the portal in a couple years.
January 18th, 2023 at 10:13 PM ^
This is a great point, and maybe evidenced by our many quality transfers now (and prior to the portal).
January 19th, 2023 at 5:27 AM ^
And I believe the portal fits Harbaugh and his NFL mindset in the college game. No more wondering if that skinny high schooler can develop into a college athlete. Plus if your a good college player looking to get paid in the league, it’s a win win for both parties.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:18 PM ^
I imagine most QBs would prefer an offense that passes the ball more often than Michigan’s. For that reason, I doubt they have much chance at a QB who’s the #1 overall recruit in his class. That they’re talking to him anyway makes it seem like things aren’t going well with Davis.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:03 PM ^
Elite qb don’t want to play in this offense anymore - gone are the days of henne and mallet. Jj ended up with us in large part due to ND AND OSU taking qbs in his cycle very early.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:27 PM ^
me thinks an elite QB just committed to UM only two years ago.
January 19th, 2023 at 5:30 AM ^
After the TCU debacle it’s obvious what we can and need to do moving forward. We have the horses to sling it around, just chose not to. Harbaugh needs to go nfl and use the pass to set up the run. 2nd half, by all means, pound them into an oblivion.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:36 PM ^
Sam also said that the Davis Family and McCarthy family are close. If that's true...Davis wouldn't be wavering since JJ is all in at UM.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:45 PM ^
You mean it being obvious he still wants back in the NFL is viewed poorly by a guy who wouldn't be playing until 2024? So shocking.
I'd be pretty surprised if we get Davis at this point. Pretty annoying and a completely unforced error
January 18th, 2023 at 2:14 PM ^
If you're going to blame Harbaugh for Davis not committing because of the NFL flirtation (when he had already been delaying a decision since October/November), then you also need to give Harbaugh credit for Corum, Zinter, CJ, Keegan, Sainristil, Barrett all coming back. He used that flirtation to get changes in NIL that likely influenced them coming back.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
Agreed. Some folks need to look at the big picture here. The NFL flirtation could have been another good reason to get this NIL program into high gear.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:05 PM ^
You are telling me you believe Michigan got an NIL program up and running in less than three weeks specifically because Harbaugh started flirting with the NFL?
January 18th, 2023 at 3:49 PM ^
We don’t need a whole new program, we need a couple agreements from the AD and large boosters.
I watched Harbaugh sit court-side at the Lipscomb game next to a billionaire. Do I think that was because he wanted to watch a meaningless basketball game while there was CFP to be prepped for? No…
