Nominations may only be submitted by the current athletics director, head coach or sports information director (SID) of a potential candidate’s collegiate institution. Nominations may also be submitted by the president/executive director of a dues-paying chapter of the National Football Foundation.
He was eligible in 1998, someone please let the athletic department know there are a few others who should probably be inducted. The school is the one that can nominate a player.
Perry, Edwards, Baas, and S. Hutchinson should be in. Then you have Irons, Shazor, and M. Jackson who would all have a strong argument.
Regardless, congrats to Mark, well-deserved honor.

Out of the names you listed, Hutchinson should absolutely positively be in. I am actually shocked he isn't.

Problem is that Hutchinson isn't related to Aidan. Being one of the best offensive guards in the history of the sport doesn't quite get you in.

But he should be in regardless of which family. Florida all-century HS team, great college player, All-America, National Champion, 1st rounder, and Pro Hall of Fame

Great news!!!

Met Mark a couple times many many years ago through my realtor (she was his Mother-in-law and always had kind things to say about him, even after she became his ex mother-in-law). Even a couple years earlier than that, I and my youngsters went to see a benefit basketball game of college and pro athletes vs the local FOP police hoops team---Messner played well but more importantly related well to the youngsters in attendance and even chatted afterwards with my kids and others, asking them about what sports they liked and participated in, then even posing with my kids for a couple photos.
A very long overdue honor for Mark and well-deserved by a quality guy!

Great for him, but weird they are reaching back to the 80s to grant the golden ring. Have they been thinking about it all this time?

One of my favorite Wolverines growing up. Congrats Mark you are a legend.

I watched him play while I was here in grad school. He was unblockable at times. Not big by today's standards, but his quickness and smarts more than made up for it. Many congratulations to Mark!

Don Brown would have loved him.
6’2” 255 lb. DT with quickness, speed and relentless pursuit.

So many great names, Harris, Hammerstein, Rivers, Cochran, Gant, Hicks, Mallory, Moeller. What a defense.
Messner was listed at 235 lbs on the sport-cast feed. Amazing.

It warms my heart to see those green and grey QBs going down !!

Congrats!

I'm surprised he wasn't in already. But I feel that's the case with every year's college football HOF class.
Also in Messner's class: LaVar Arrington, Champ Bailey, Rashaan Salaam. They all played in the 90s and were legit college stars then, I would have guessed they would have been elected well before now. Salaam unfortunately won't be at the ceremony to enjoy the honor.

Enrolled at Michigan in 84 with Messner. His redshirt freshman year in 85 was amazing. I remember bringing my dad to the Maryland game that year. I don't remember Messner's stats that game but he seemed unstoppable and that's the first I noticed him. 11 sacks as a defensive tackle and first team Big Ten his first year starting.

A great day for Jim Harbaugh. A former teammate (Messner) and a former player (Andrew Luck) both inducted.

M(ark Messner) Go Blue!

Go ☘️ and Go Blue!

Unbelievable that he wasn't in before. One of only three players to be first team All-Big Ten four times. And he was a first team All-American twice. Congratulations on an absolutely deserving honor.

Mark Messners #60 home jersey was the first jersey if any sport I ever owned.

One of my favorite football players period.

My four years at UM coincided with the four years he played. He was a holy terror.
I had a friend on the team who was the long snapper and a backup OL. One spring just before the spring game I bumped into him and he was smiling from ear to ear. I asked him what was up and he said "We just picked the teams for the spring game and Messner is on my side. YESSS!!"
He said Messner was as relentless, high-motor, competitive, and just downright mean in practice as he was in any game

He started as a RS FR my senior year. Along with Mike Hammerstein, those two were every bit as good and disruptive as Aidan and David this year - hard to stop TWO fierce pass rushers, though Mike and Mark were interior linemen vs. ends.
Remember him getting after OSU QB for a great sack late in our win vs. OSU in 1985. Also, he was dominant in the 1988 Indy game when Indy was very good. Same burst of speed through the line as we saw from Aidan.
He badly hurt his knee in 1989/90 playoff while on the Rams vs. 49ers. Never played again sadly.
