OT: Best Jellies and Jams Thread
Good morning. I like jellies and jams. Do you? Let's talk together about our love for various jellies and jams. Here's my ranking:
- Strawberry jam
- Peach jam
- Raspberry jam

What about the rest of you jelly and jam loving degenerates?
Also, I did this because Rob F dared me to...

Please tell me where you find Strawberry Jalapeno before this thread is deleted.

Coleman's Farm Market, 5415 W Michigan Ave, Ypsi
Just east of the intersection of Carpenter and Michigan.
Strawberry-Jalepeno and much, much more

Rob F, before you nuke this thread and send me to Bolivia for my crimes, please consider a couple things:
- Would this thread have happened without your instigating comment?
- Is it not a great thing to have this thread anyway?
- What is your jelly/jam power ranking??

Jam up and jelly tight, 'Moleskyn'!
I hereby preserve(s) your status on the MGoBoard as an esteemed fan of the Detroit Tigers and U of M sports, and would never send you to Bolivia (the land of dry toast) for this minor infraction that I instigated.
My favorites include but are not limited to : Orange Marmalade, Peach Preserves, and the mighty Thimbleberry Jam (one of the 7 Wonders of the U.P.).

You're a damn good mod, Rob F.

This board is a lot more fun after a win (aside from some disgruntled forward pass aficionados).

Tommy Roe (song 1969-70?)
September 14th, 2021 at 9:31 AM ^
You got the reference correct, 'Eng1980'!
September 14th, 2021 at 10:08 AM ^
Even more OT.
In the early 1970s, on one of our first dates, my wife to be actually asked me what my favorite song was. (I had just embarrassingly admitted to liking MacArthur Park.) Having no credible response, I retorted "Jam up and Jelly Tight." Broke her up...I knew I was in love. Bless Tommy Roe.

OMG, that's hilarious! "You won't say you will, but there's a chance that you might."

This thread is making me dizzy!
I mean - my head is actually spinning.
September 14th, 2021 at 11:04 AM ^
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
September 14th, 2021 at 9:45 AM ^
Maybe it's just me, but I could never get into orange marmalade. I don't hate it, but I'd probably go straight honey before I go with orange marmalade. The orange peel is just too bitter and I don't enjoy the texture.
September 14th, 2021 at 10:26 AM ^
It's an acquired taste, like scotch.
September 14th, 2021 at 1:37 PM ^
It's a good thing. Mgobloggers are able to walk and chew gum.
I've been making my own jams, jellies and syrups for about a decade. I pissed off my wife when I made a few suggestions that she didn't like and I was told if I didn't like her method, do it myself. I foolishly accepted the challenge. The biggest problem I face is finding really tasty fruit. Not all fruit is the same.
My favorites in order, and we often do blends of more than one fruit and add spices:
1. Blueberry
2. Strawberry
3. Blackberry
4. Raspberry

Controversial pick: garlic and onion jam. Put it on burgers and it’s *chefs kiss*
Also like a bourbon bacon jam.
But perhaps these are technically relishes instead of jams?
September 14th, 2021 at 7:42 AM ^
Had some green tomato jam on a burger last week and it was delicious
September 14th, 2021 at 8:04 AM ^
Here in support of bacon jam.
Also a fan of currant jam both for the flavor as well as the potential dad jokes about preferring it to past or future jam.
September 14th, 2021 at 7:41 AM ^
Home made: jalapeno jelly, strawberry, blackberry and huckleberry preserves
Store bought: Dundee's orange marmalade
Song: Ram Jam - Black Betty

Sadly, neither now. I don't like to put my insulin resistance to the test or mess around with artificial sweeteners.
September 14th, 2021 at 8:31 AM ^
I'm betting you keep a couple pieces of your favorite candy in a pocket just in case, right? No sense in not being prepared if things start to slow down... If so, replace that with a jam of your choice. Win!!
(Seriously - my dad was diabetic and often needed the sugar; also, I've had two co-workers go down due to lack of sugar. Poured a coke down both to perk them back up before EMS arrived. Shit is serious...)
September 16th, 2021 at 12:31 AM ^
Try allulose. A naturally occurring rare sugar albeit man made for mass production.
Works great in homemade jams and marmalades.
September 14th, 2021 at 7:45 AM ^
Red raspberry is my favorite. Growing up we'd pick black raspberries at the golf course to make jam.
Since we are on topic I'd like to give a shout out to the Jam Pot in Eagle Harbor, MI.
September 14th, 2021 at 7:51 AM ^
Agreed-red raspberry is sublime. Back home in Indiana we grew our own...here in Kansas this is nearly impossible.
September 14th, 2021 at 10:33 AM ^
And how about homemade raspberry pie!
September 14th, 2021 at 12:24 PM ^
Jam Pot is legit.
I also was happy to be able to get Michigan made jams from Stover's in Berrien Springs mailed to be for $5 a jar (the same as the fundraisers my kids used to do) all the way to Kentucky. (Local jams here are a little suss.) EDIT: they've raised the price to $6 a jar... but they do have Blackberry and Raspberry jams that include seeds!
September 14th, 2021 at 12:31 PM ^
Was there this summer. You can buy thimbleberry jam for $24/small jar. Crazy.
September 14th, 2021 at 7:46 AM ^
Make your own!!! Right now we have strawberry, blackberry and peach. Concord grapes will be here in a couple weeks.
September 14th, 2021 at 7:46 AM ^
Strawberry is the best and grape should not even get ranked.
Your list is also missing blueberry jam and marmalades. Not sure what's going on with that.
Cloudberry jam is my vote for best specialty jam. (Might be carried by an IKEA near you, but otherwise you're probably not getting it stateside.)
September 14th, 2021 at 7:49 AM ^
The red lingonberry jam from ikea is actually really good
September 14th, 2021 at 7:47 AM ^
Raspberry-jalapeño jam rules the land of toast. Also good on sliced pork tenderloin. My wife makes the onion jam cited above, and it rocks on savory foods.
September 14th, 2021 at 7:50 AM ^
There’s a vendor at the farmer’s market that makes Habanero Raspberry, that’s my favorite
September 14th, 2021 at 8:43 AM ^
Plum-jalapeno is another good variety on some tenderloin
September 14th, 2021 at 10:16 AM ^
Or replacing the grape jelly in the grape jelly-chili sauced crock pot meatballs
September 14th, 2021 at 7:50 AM ^
1. Cherry jam
2. Black cherry jam
3. Strawberry jam
September 14th, 2021 at 7:51 AM ^
No one else likes apricot?
September 14th, 2021 at 8:09 AM ^
Apricot is good. If you mix it with Peach and some vinegar and spices, you can duplicate McDonald's Sweet and Sour. Pretty good stuff.
September 14th, 2021 at 9:31 AM ^
I think those little packets of duck sauce from Chinese restaurants are basically that also
September 14th, 2021 at 9:57 AM ^
Yes and no. If it's really good, sure. But I find some apricots to be way too sweet. It hits the roof of my mouth and gives me a sugar buzz / headache.
September 14th, 2021 at 10:43 AM ^
Love apricot on rye toast with a little butter underneath.
September 14th, 2021 at 4:21 PM ^
One part apricot jam, one part sriracha, one part yellow mustard. Use on pork, chicken tenders, vegetables, whatever. You're welcome.
September 14th, 2021 at 7:53 AM ^
This thread did take long after the Mod threat.
thanks Rob F.
1. Blackberry
2. Raspberry
3. Concord Grape
4. Orange Marmalade

I am a huge fan of whatever is at the bottom of the Publix yogurt blueberry fruit on the bottom. I am pretty sure it is a blueberry-like substance and it is worth having to eat your way down there. TWSS I know.
September 14th, 2021 at 8:17 AM ^
The key with those fruit on the bottom yogurts is to give a good, churning stir before you eat. Bring that fruit from the bottom and mix it in so you can enjoy it with every bite. Anyone who leaves the fruit at the bottom until the end is a terrorist.
September 14th, 2021 at 8:33 AM ^
Right?!!? I mean, the fruit is there to give the yogurt some actual decent taste!
September 14th, 2021 at 9:43 AM ^
If that's the case, then I guess you can call me a closet terrorist.
I eat about half or more of the yogurt off the top, it has already absorbed some of the fruit flavor and serves as the appetizer to the bottom half of the yogurt, which I then mix with the fruit for a taste explosion ?? ?
DY-NO-MITE!!
