Good news about our defense?

Quote by Ronnie Bell about the scrimmage this week makes our defense sound promising. I know it's camp talk but....  This is from Angelique via Twiiter:
Receiver Ronnie Bell said the defense had the advantage in Wednesday scrimmage at Michigan Stadium: "We got our butts kicked yesterday. The defense was flying around, I love it. I’m on the offensive side of the ball and I’m excited just watching them."

I honestly don't think the defense will be a sore spot this season.  I believe it will be much improved over the last year couple of years, but not up to the 2016-2017 standard (which, I mean, were insane, so c'mon...).  I think 2018 might be a good comp for this years defense - really good, but not where it could take over and control a worthy opponent.  It will need the offense's help to win games, which is all you can reasonably ask from a defense against a good, modern offense.

The question, as it has been since 2017, is whether the offense will morph into a viable, modern offense that can actually get out of its own way.  From 2017-2020 that answer was a resounding 'NO'.  So I'm hoping to see a change in coaching philosophy on the offensive side this year.  I believe, tentatively...

What was it that Ronnie Raygun said?  Oh yeah - "trust, but verify".

Doesn’t it help the defense more to continue to  play defense against our offense day in and day out? They have to pretty much download our plays at some point. I’d be more worried if the offense was running their standard stuff this far into camp and dominating our defense. Maybe I’m simplifying it too much?

I just want our offense to outscore the other team's offense. The days of winning games 21-10 are over. If we want any chance at an excellent season, we need to average 35+ PPG.

Reports out of practice are Rorschach tests for personality. Determined optimists will interpret positive reports about one unit as proof that unit is going to be good, while determined pessimists will interpret the same report as proof the opposite unit sucks. Those at neither extreme will wait until we start playing opponents before forming conclusions.

The funny thing is that I'm a confirmed pessimist by nature—to me, the glass is always half empty—but the extent and depth of the doom and gloom around here exceeds what I saw during the RR and Hoke years.

To many, the glass isn't half-empty—it's lying shattered on the floor in a hundred pieces, impossible to ever reassemble.

That’s because now the AD just looks complacent. RR got 3 years, Hoke 4. We’re going on 7 with Harbaugh and I don’t think anyone can say he looks like he’s on track to winning the conference any time soon. Vegas has the O/U at 7.5. Unless they shock the world and greatly exceed that number, this is just pathetic in year 7.

Last year's defense was pretty bad but it was also, I believe, one of the least experienced units in the country in terms of starts and playing time, especially once Htuchinson and Paye were injured.   Plus, the safeties were being coached by a guy on Zoom and a grad assistant because apparently he pissed everyone off.  So it's not particularly surprising that they've bounced back a bit.

That certainly didn't help, but the defense also allowed every team to score on their first or second possession except Rutgers...in which they scored on their third drive.  So while the offense struggled the defense absolutely didn't help matters by failing to keep teams off the scoreboard early.
