Do we root for Illinois or Ohio State today?
Can make an argument for either one:
- If Illinois defeats OSU today, it locks Ill into a #1 seed in the NCAA, thus Michigan couldnt face Ill until at least the final four.
- If OSU defeats Ill today, Ill could fall to a #2 in the NCAA. If Ill is a #2 in a bracket on the opposite side of UM's bracket, then UM could only face Ill in the national championship game.
Lord knows I hate OSU with the burning rage of a thousand super-novas, but I want what's best for Michigan's chances in the NCAA tourney. So, who do we root for today: Illinois or Ohio State, and why?
I can't ever bring myself to root for Ohio State.
Michigan is all but locked into the 2nd or 3rd 1 Seed. Thus, if Illinois is the last #1, we wouldn't see them until the final game, if at all. Similarly, if Illinois is a 2 Seed, they'll likely be the top 2 Seed and would play the worst 1 Seed. Again, we wouldn't see them until the title game, if at all.
My dream scenario is we beat Sparty, IU beats Purdue. MSU drops to 10-7 seed game which they win and advance to eventually face a rematch against Illinois. Wouldn’t that be fun?
normally, i would say to hell with osu and root for illinois all day in this game. but too many illinois fans have become whiny bitches since we are not making up those missed covid games; thinking they are missing out on a shot at the BIG title. so to hell with them today.
we had a bad night. dont irrationally fear illinois...even the best team in college bball can have an off night. the only thing illinois whipping us the other night showed is that they are probably at least as good as minnesota, and clearly minnesota is not a better ball team than michigan

OSU is in a nose dive. Would be very surprised to see them win.
Hopes a freak snowstorm happens just prior to the game and some fool left a hole open in the roof or something so that all the snows blow in so they cancel the game, forcing the selection committee to pick the teams names out of the hat and they are stuck facing the #1 on the opposite side fo the bracket and get bounced by them.
Never root for OSU. Under any circumstances. Now, you can root AGAINST OSU, or AGAINST Illinois, but never FOR either.
In this particular case, however, I believe it is always best for OSU to lose. Always.

Do not really care who wins, but I would like to see OSU have success offensively, if only to give some ideas about how to attack Illinois' D if we play again
I only worry we peaked a bit early this year. We have the talent, coaching and depth to win it all, but it's also about luck and being hot at the right time.
At our peak, I think Michigan is the best team in the country. Right now however, teams like Illinois and West Virginia would scare me the most as they have the players to expose us on an off day and have been pretty hot the past month.
One good thing is it's hard to beat a good team twice in a relatively short time span, so if we faced Illinois again, I'd at least expect a much more competitive game.
Gonazaga and Baylor are elite, but I think they are a better matchup for us and we can survive them even on a day where we play B to B+ ball.
I'd rather avoid all these teams on our path to a national title. :)
