Jim Harbaugh's goals for 2021
Be a part of the UM B1G and NC team.

Don't embarrass himself.
And don't embarrass us.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:41 PM ^
I honestly can't remember, but has he ever said anything like this in the past? Not that it really matters, when you consider the past results, but I always recall him saying things like "compete" and we should be considered a favorite, but never anything so bold. Maybe the old Jimmy is back.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
I kinda wonder if #6 alludes to what you're saying here.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
"This will be our finest hour" before losing to Penn State
January 15th, 2021 at 1:07 PM ^
But damn if they didn't put up some great offense in that second half
January 15th, 2021 at 1:08 PM ^
To his credit, that team came out and had an unbelievable second half. It just wasn’t quite enough to overcome the dismal 1st half.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:20 PM ^
I would give you 1000 upvotes if I could because this is funny as hell.
January 15th, 2021 at 3:45 PM ^
In his defense, they were one missed catch away from OT.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:04 PM ^
He has never, not once, promised or guaranteed anything other than that his team would play hard and compete to the best of its ability. He gets too much BS about all the 'championships' he was supposed to bring - he didn't promise that! The media and opponents made those statements in his name.
So yeah, I would love it if this means the 'old Jimmy' is back. But I'll remain skeptical until I see the team in a few games...
January 15th, 2021 at 1:24 PM ^
Maybe he never promised championships, but wouldn’t you think that was the goal when coming back to your alma mater for $8million a year? I think M originally hired Jim because they knew of his obsession with winning.
I don’t really care that he has specified goals this year or not. It’s the media and the fans that will ultimately decide if he reaches his goals. I’d actually prefer if he was more realistic. If he really thinks a NC and shot at the BIG is realistic in 2021 then he is either a different person or delusional.
January 15th, 2021 at 2:32 PM ^
Except for the last one (not being scared of being fired), it sounds rather rehashed to me. Just like EUMK.
I wish the program would talk less, execute more.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:39 PM ^
Too late for that Robbie. I live in Ohio and he signed an extension coming off a 2-4 season, riding the back of an 0-5 lifetime record against the school down here.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:47 PM ^
What does your living in Ohio have to do with anything?
January 15th, 2021 at 2:35 PM ^
Embarrassment?
January 15th, 2021 at 2:59 PM ^
I think that covers all 50 states
January 18th, 2021 at 10:25 AM ^
I think he's telling us jerseys aren't selling like hotcakes.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:32 PM ^
Get the garage organized and exercise 3 times a week for 20 minutes
January 15th, 2021 at 12:32 PM ^
Beat Sparty and the Suckeyes. This happens, I would be ecstatic. Then bring on the hoops season.
Starting to understand how Kansas fans feel...
January 15th, 2021 at 1:04 PM ^
How are you not ready for the basketball season? We are a basketball school and a hella good one at that.
January 15th, 2021 at 2:32 PM ^
You're right. Who can deny the 3000 comments on every hoops game open thread. bBaLl ScHoOl
January 15th, 2021 at 1:30 PM ^
Beat sparty, be competitive with EVERYONE else with only 2 losses and I’d be happy with that result for 2021. I have no confidence this will occur. Asking them to beat OSU after watching us in 2020 might be a little bit of a stretch in 2021.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:33 PM ^
Well if the plan was to not do those things the previous 6 years he has been wildly successful.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:35 PM ^
I don't get it. People are flaming him hard online, what is he supposed to do? Is he literally not to have any personal goals for the season? No coach is ever going to come out and say, I'd like to finish 2nd in the Division to Ohio State and finish the year 8-4. Sheesh. I get that his personal goals are unlikely to be met this season, but hammering a guy for having personal goals. The internet sucks.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:40 PM ^
that's correct.
the only valid response to a "what are your goals for the next season" is several-fold:
- "i will try to go 12-0."
- "when and if my team loses a game to a rival, or fails to dominate a lesser opponient, i will rend my garments,
- "gnash my teeth, and
- "set myself on fire."
thank you for attending my ted talk.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:04 PM ^
"the only valid response to a "what are your goals for the next season" is several-fold: "
In my opinion its not several fold. its singular .
The correct response is " To win "
Thats all he should be trying to do . How he does it , thats up to him .
January 15th, 2021 at 1:25 PM ^
...but he's not at a media day or press conference shelling out coach-speak. He is presenting to Michigan High School coaches on, presumably, how to win.
And even if he was at a press conference, then he'd just get trolled for only giving out shallow, uninspired answers.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:46 PM ^
Agreed...I don't understand all the flaming either. What is he supposed to say? This is about as transparent and soul baring as we have seen out of him.
Accomplish the first half of #4 and its a huge step in the right direction.

Why grown ass adults go online to anonymously mock a person who has achieved far more than they could ever dream of is one of the great mysteries of the universe, and likely a triggering factor in the impending downfall of western society.
I would assume that the context of this is something like expressing the importance of personal goal setting and then providing examples of his own goals.
It's a proven fact that goal driven people achieve more success than those who don't take time to set goals. I would think most college coaches have a similar set of personal goals.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:03 PM ^
Good post. Also, you gotta remember that this is American football where grown-ass men do incredibly stupid and often amazingly corny shit for crazy money in pursuit of glory in a highly dubious and violent. . . game.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:48 PM ^
So why are you commenting on it and watching it?
I have never understood this, if you think football is so awful then just don't feed the beast.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:31 PM ^

Idk if it really is a mystery. There's an old saying, "Hurting people, hurt people." There's a lot of people out there hurting in many different ways for a lot of different reasons unfortunately.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:20 PM ^
These are not SMART goals. If it were me I would be required to re-work them and, at the very least, provide a means to measure progress towards achieving each goal. I would require the same from my staff.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:22 PM ^
Smart goals are dumb.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:25 PM ^
Let's go down the checklist:
S: Specific (B1G and NCG)
M: Measurable (Win loss record and hardware)
A: Attainable (I mean...we don't have a bowl ban so it isn't unattainable)
R: Realistic (I'd say so. We have one of the highest budgets for football programs in the country and are only 3 years removed from being in the top 4 for a chunk of the season).
T: Time-sensitive (Next year)
If Warde wants to get on Jim, I think he has a legitimate way to say this is a SMART goal.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:38 PM ^
I don’t think people on their level are hung up on corporate platitudes. But what do I know.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:41 PM ^
not so much. you'll never achieve something you can't measure.

I wasn't excited about 2021 Michigan Football until we signed Mike Hart. It's not rational to expect his hiring will make a huge difference on team performance, but he is one of my favorite players ever, so him being back on the sidelines just feels right.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:49 PM ^
I’m not sure either. What is everyone’s thoughts on next season? The offense should be better but what about the defense? Does Harbaugh go with McCarthy and start building around him?
January 15th, 2021 at 1:01 PM ^
The best case scenario for Jim is that he can be his own Jim Harbaugh circa 2015 and come in this year the way he took over the team when he first arrived post-Hoke. In this case the moribund coach he’s taking over for will be himself rather than Hoke but that fiery, creative, look for any advantage to win, passionate Harbaugh making a ho-hum team into a winner is his best chance. I know he likes to “attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind” but it’d be great to see that version of Jim Harbaugh back at the helm and see if it makes any difference. The roster isn’t going to be fixed this year but there are talented players on the team and with some luck, transfer portal additions and good coaching there’s no reason he couldn’t have a good season that would feel like a momentum swing for the program. Now, recent events don’t seem to indicate that will occur but I’d reckon that’s the best case scenario for Harbaugh?

I was going to write the same thing in different words! I don't know if he can re-live who he was 7 years ago, but he's back on a long term deal - so we need to jump back on board and hope like hell it works out. It's okay for us to be dubious, to wait for actual results on the field, before buying back in fully. But support is what's needed - we can support without a full buy-in, for the time being. I'm not very happy he's back, but I'm sure as hell going to support his attempts at getting going again, like it was going in 2015-16.
As for the on-field stuff, I think the new coaches on defense (MacDonald & Minter, assuming they actually sign) will get it back to respectability immediately. It's not a deep defense, and there are holes, but a new attitude, scheme, and teaching approach can work wonders. Offense is where my big concerns live. After the last few years, I have no belief that offense has any idea about what it wants to do. I fully expect to continue watching an offense that lights it up one game, then barely rushes for 2 yds/c against a 10-man box the next game.
Take my money, coach. Make me buy!!!
January 15th, 2021 at 1:14 PM ^
You go with the best QB. Roll the balls out, let them compete, and go with the best guy. If it’s McCarthy, fine. If it’s McNamara, fine. If Milton has another offseason jump and he’s the best guy, fine.
Harbaugh is coaching for his job. He doesn’t have the luxury of NOT playing the best guy. He doesn’t have time to take a rebuilding year to let an unprepared guy learn on the job. Harbaugh goes that route and it just might cost him his job.
If we had hired a new coach, I’d absolutely advocate for just running with McCarthy and building around him from the get-go. But I don’t expect a coach that is on the hot seat to take that approach.
January 15th, 2021 at 2:46 PM ^
Most probable outcome is that the team finishes 8-4 with Ls to UW, Wisco, NW, and OSU.
January 15th, 2021 at 3:44 PM ^
Next season: Ceiling 9-3, floor 3-9, most likely 6-6.
I hope there is a fair QB competition and the player that plays better -- not the one that tries hardest -- starts.
January 15th, 2021 at 1:36 PM ^
I could have had higher hopes had we gotten joe Moorhead or someone of his caliber. Also, hopes have gone down knowing we can’t even hold on to worthy bc of our own ineptitude.
January 15th, 2021 at 3:04 PM ^
Wait, what? Did he asked to be let out of his LOI? Did I miss something?
January 15th, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
Win a lotta football gaemz plz
January 15th, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
My own speculation: It sounds like the politics of being a UM football coach got in the way, and hes not going to play that game any longer.
Im probably wrong, but I like to look at things from a positive standpoint
January 15th, 2021 at 12:43 PM ^
I'm a self proclaimed huge homer, but I smiled when I read his power point presentation.
