Internet chatter - reported here first!
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:22 PM ^
Some of this is personality fit - some longevity.
If Derek and JH clicked well at Stanford, maybe there is a chance.
If Derek think Ed O lasts longer at LSU than JH does at UM, it's all about the stability.
JH will need to recruit a high quality DC who can also recruit, which we didn't see from DB.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:26 PM ^
FormerSEC Head coaches seem to always take a coordinator job at another SEC school
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:43 PM ^
Ed O doesn’t last more than 12 months from now. We can cross lasting longer off the list....
December 24th, 2020 at 2:36 AM ^
Ed O won a national title last year. Sure they stink this year but did manage to beat Florida. I’m not sure you can guarantee Harbaugh is going to last longer. At least I hope you can’t.
December 24th, 2020 at 9:03 AM ^
Not to mention, they did end up 5-5, which all things considered (losing a ton of talent including the best performance by a QB in many years, losing their QB whisperer, not having any time for a young team to gel), wasn't that bad. They might not be national-championship caliber, without getting QB play like Burrow again, but they will always have plenty of talent to coach.
December 24th, 2020 at 9:38 AM ^
I think his confidence centers more on the combination of on-the-field stuff PLUS all the off-the-field issues LSU has been having with sexual assault stuff and cover up lately
December 24th, 2020 at 1:04 PM ^
Right, but all of the hot seat chatter for Coach O is due to off the field allegations..
December 24th, 2020 at 9:13 AM ^
LSU lost something like 20 starters from the 2019 team. It was a brand new team, and they finished at .500 with two straight wins to end the year.
December 24th, 2020 at 10:20 AM ^
so many unrealistic people out there...
December 24th, 2020 at 1:59 AM ^
He'll get a lot more defensive talent at LSU as well.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:24 PM ^
Well ...... this would be somewhat disappointing, but WM/JH may ultimately have a different plan in-place.
NOTE: Mods should change the title as it implies he ‘has’ when it’s just rumor and speculation.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:25 PM ^
I’m getting that same feeling like when a recruit that we do want chooses another school so we make up a reason why we didn’t want him in the first place.
Next DC up?!
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:31 PM ^
Don't have to make one up when you thought he was underwhelming at best in the first place.
December 23rd, 2020 at 11:12 PM ^
...and that’s usually what we say when it happens too!
December 24th, 2020 at 7:55 AM ^
You're right, that is usually what we say. That doesn't mean it's not true in this case, I don't know anything about him other than his time at Vande, but I was not impressed by his resume.
December 24th, 2020 at 8:42 AM ^
The fact that you only know about him from his head coaching job means you’re not informed enough to judge him as a DC. He’s a VERY highly thought of DC in the college football landscape.
“I only know about him as a head coach so I’m not impressed with him as a DC,” isn’t really a sound argument.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:28 PM ^
Next man up
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:29 PM ^
I think Jim cooled on him
December 24th, 2020 at 9:18 AM ^
I'm glad you know everything Jim is thinking? What are the Harbaughs having for Christmas dinner?
December 24th, 2020 at 9:52 AM ^
Duh steak and milk
December 24th, 2020 at 10:00 AM ^
I’m glad you have the ability to identify an obvious joke.
December 24th, 2020 at 12:10 PM ^
—————-> the joke
(‘-‘) you
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:30 PM ^
So I guess no one on the site will come up with a derekmasonshotwife avatar?
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:32 PM ^
No high profile DC is coming to this situation. No one even has any idea if Harbaugh will be here.
If Harbaugh stays the DC hired will be a defensive version of Josh Gattis.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:49 PM ^
High profile? Mason was a shitty coach who got fired from a shitty football school. In fact Mason reversed everything Franklin did for Vandy.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:52 PM ^
He's a high profile DC just like Will Muschamp. That's the reason both of them got the jobs they got. Neither of them are a high profile head coach.
December 23rd, 2020 at 11:10 PM ^
he forgot everything about coaching defense because he was a HC at Vandy? I’m not buying it.
Get over it. He’s a shitty coach
December 23rd, 2020 at 11:22 PM ^
They held Florida to 38 points. That’s better than what Bama did. Vandy’s problem is their offense and their talent level.
(They also held #5 TAMU to 17, but that was early in the year.)
December 23rd, 2020 at 11:25 PM ^
Definitely hire the guy for holding Florida to 38 points. He got fired from Vanderbilt. Move on.
December 23rd, 2020 at 11:40 PM ^
an anonymous SEC assistant coach said: “I’m not exaggerating when I say this: Derek Mason is as good of a defensive coach as there is in the world.
December 23rd, 2020 at 11:53 PM ^
An anonymous coach said the same thing about Don Brown.
December 24th, 2020 at 7:58 AM ^
I don't know why you're getting negged, you're on point here.
December 24th, 2020 at 10:31 AM ^
Judging a defensive coordinator’s ability on his job as a head coach at one of the toughest jobs in the country is many things. Ignorant. Dumb. Out of context. Out of touch... “on point” is not one of the things that it is.
December 24th, 2020 at 10:48 AM ^
He’s getting negged because he’s trolling.
December 24th, 2020 at 12:17 PM ^
Kyle Pitts didn’t play in the LSU game so you can put an asterisk next to that one.
December 24th, 2020 at 6:17 AM ^
I'm not sure why this is getting down voted. I agree. If people think James Franklin is bad, this guy was worse. Franklin took over a bottom feeder program and took it to a bowl game every year. Mason took over for Franklin and his best seasons were back to back 6 - 6 seasons. He didn't recruit as well as Franklin did, and we just lived through a DC that didn't recruit, and we see how that went.
December 24th, 2020 at 10:50 AM ^
It’s being downvoted because we aren’t talking about hiring this guy to be our head coach. So his success as a head coach (or lack of) is irrelevant.
Being a bad head coach is not indicative of your abilities as a coordinator. He’s a phenomenal defensive coordinator. So shitting on a guy for not succeeding as a head coach at Vanderbilt is dumb, and deserving of downvotes.
December 24th, 2020 at 12:58 PM ^
Also, if you think recruiting kids to Michigan is tough due to grades, try getting them to Vandy.
December 24th, 2020 at 2:43 PM ^
Franklin didn't do much at Vanderbilt. The team was generally ranked about 45th in most fancy stats. The record was window dressing. Beat everyone ranked 50 or lower, lose to everyone ranked 30 or higher. Toss in a victory over blue blood having a bad year.
I am not saying he is not a good coach but if you are going to convince me did something at Vandy you are going to have to be more specific.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:33 PM ^
Can we at least get some credible internets chatter?
December 24th, 2020 at 11:19 AM ^
48 hours until season 9. Best Christmas gift ever.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:35 PM ^
Leavitt is the one. Just wait.
December 23rd, 2020 at 11:00 PM ^
Lovie
December 24th, 2020 at 12:43 AM ^
I think it's Leavitt too. FAU just lost 25-10 to Memphis in the Montgomery Bowl tonight, so he may be available soon.
December 24th, 2020 at 8:31 AM ^
December 24th, 2020 at 8:47 AM ^
God no, not another retread. Not to mention he runs a 3-4 so there's going to be a high transition cost, plus we don't really have the DL for a 3-4 so it would be another square peg into a round hole situation.
December 24th, 2020 at 9:22 AM ^
You realize every coach is a retread unless you hire a Jr High Coach. You either get an experience coach that has been fired or you hire a very green coach with no experience. I know what I want.
December 24th, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
Or you hire a talented up and comer who has shown schematic innovation and proven recruiting chops. Leavitt would be a disappointment.
December 24th, 2020 at 12:52 PM ^
You generally take a significantly higher risk in going after a young up and comer. Is Harbaugh in a situation where he’s going to take a risk with his future in doubt?
If you’re just taking a job or have a solidified job status, then that’s the kind of guy you probably want. When you’re on the hot seat, you want a proven guy with the ability for a quick fix.
