Today's Schedule of Games

Submitted by M-Dog on December 5th, 2020 at 11:21 AM

We started this wacky COVID season without a dog in the hunt, and we might finish it that way.  We certainly don't have a dog in the hunt today, as Michigan - Maryland is cancelled for COVID.

But college football mercifully moves on without us, and there are a few games of interest today.

At noon, not much.  Texas A&M at Auburn, I guess, but I don't think it will be close.  There are some morbid-curiosity games, to see who winds up the most miserable if 1-5 Penn State loses to Rutgers, or 1-4 Nebraska loses to Purdue, or Ohio State looks bad against MSU after all the fuss about getting all their games in.

In the afternoon, Iowa State/Matt Campbell can play their way into an unprecedented Big 12 Championship game with a win over WVU.  Indiana at Wisconsin should be interesting, but Indiana losing QB Penix will be tough to overcome.

In the evening, an impromptu meeting of undefeated teams caused by a Liberty COVID cancellation - BYU at Costal Carolina.  Costal Carolina is a great story (admit it, you didn't know they were D1 either), and I hope they win.  In this week's edition of "How Great Players Can Make Ordinary Coaches Look Like Great Coaches", a Joe Burrow-less Coach O and LSU will get crushed by Alabama.  Cajun Brady Hoke indeed.

This week's Pac 12 After Dark Special(s) - meaningless and wacky games played just for the fun of it - UCLA at Arizona State and Oregon St. at Utah.

The Big Ten's about to give MSU the death penalty for daring hurt Justin Fields and the conference's crown jewel. Didn't you guys get the memo that goal #1 for this league is just to get OSU in the playoffs???

Penn State is beating Rutgers 17-0 at halftime, literally the opposite of our game! If Cade doesn't have a perfect game, we would've lost. There's nothing about harbaugh and this staff that suggests they deserve another season.

Yup. We did. And the sad part about our game with MSU was that it was not as close as the score indicated. Michigan got out-coached, out-muscled, and out-classed by a mediocre MSU team.

That tells us exactly what we’re in store for next week. And all of OSU’s starters who are out this week will undoubtedly be healthy for the game next week.

72-3 OSU. Next week’s game will set Michigan Football back 5-10 years just by itself.

Like Salvatore says above - OSU clearly prepped for Lombardi - stop the deep ball and the power run game.  Once Thorne came in it took a bit for them to figure he can’t throw deep with any consistency and now they have basically shut down MSU sans the occasional Thorne scramble.

MSU fans have been screaming for Thorne most of the year but MSU coaches see the QBs all week and clearly feel Lombardi gives them the better chance to win.  Essentially both of them are marginal but MSU feels there is a better chance for the occasional bomb by Lombardi than any consistent dink and dunk drives with Thorne.

I haven't been watching.  I just wanted to check the score.

The luxury of being up 45-10 early in the 4th quarter despite missing 23 players.  It truly never ends for OSU unless they're playing Clemson or an SEC team.

agreed, if Wisconsin loses today there is literally 2 fucking teams in the west with winning records...

The east is equally as fucking trash.  only 2 teams with winning records in the east.

So the big ten this year has 4 teams with winning records

Ohio State was up 35-7 in the third quarter against Indiana.  Justin Fields, who has thrown 3 interceptions in his 18 other games combined, threw 3 against IU alone.

So it's possible that the final score is a true reflection of the teams' strength.  I think it's equally likely that OSU lost focus with a large lead in the second half, and that IU benefited from a very uncharacteristic, unlikely to be repeated performance from OSU's QB.

Unless you think OSU is poorly coached, it's difficult to imagine how they could not be one of the top 4 teams in the country, given the recruiting ratings of their players, and the presumed #2 pick in the NFL draft playing QB.

Next year they'll be in a much different spot, with a new QB with virtually no game experience as the starter, another one as the backup, and a true Freshman at 3rd string.

Did IU benefit from some luck?  Absolutely, but IU isn't a team of superstars either.  If they could come back and nearly tie the game on the road, think what a team full of NFL draft players (Bama, etc.) would do.

OSU strikes me as a medium-large fish in a small pond this season - they put up gaudy numbers against bad teams but probably couldn't keep up with the "big" fish.

It also highlights the poor athleticism on this MSU roster. Every time a play was in space, the OSU guys just ran around or away from the MSU defenders. MSU will actually get worse athletically after this senior class.
Unfortunately, it also shows the coaching malpractice by the UM O staff in the 2nd game. The inside runs were a waste because they didn’t set up enough plays on the edge or downfield to exploit MSU’s lack of talent. The D coaching was a travesty as well.

Iowa State, with a chance to lock-in a regular season Big XII title and a title game appearance look polished and motivated, despite one of the lowest ranked rosters by "stars".  Yet they still have a running back in the Heisman race, a QB with nearly every record in school history, and big wins over the top teams in the conference.

If we haven't already had a talk with Matt Campbell or his agent, we're fucking buffoons.  He's gonna do damage at whatever school he ends up with next year

Campbell and ISU come out to play in 1st. Nice to see a squad kick you in the teeth from opening kickoff. Anyone who thinks Harbaugh is better coach now than Campbell is clueless! If we don’t get Campbell this year, we will regret it in a few years.

Wisconsin with another attempt to knock out a QB.  Vicious hit to the head.  I have no idea how they don't call that targeting.  Yes it wasn't helmet to helmet but it was a shot to the head on a player that was down.  Wisconsin is rising up to near-MSU level dirty play.  Funny how when things aren't looking great, they suddenly knock out the opponent's QB.

Coastal Carolina with the upset. Their center is 5'9".  Chadwell has these guys coached up and believing.  He'll be coaching in the SEC next year. Fun close game to the very last second!
