MSU paying Tucker $5.5 million per year, 6 year deal
$33 million over 6 years for a guy with 5 career head coaching victories. Puts him at 12th highest paid coach in the country.

What happened to Fickell?
February 12th, 2020 at 10:22 PM ^
He was too fickle for the job...
February 13th, 2020 at 7:35 AM ^
MSU decided to drop the money on a guy who could get them a win against Arizona State.

Too many waffles for breakfast.

Paraphrasing Fernando from 80's SNL: "Better to try to look good, than actually be good."

You look marvelous, darling.

It's sad when an "institute for higher learning" is so desperate to be good at football. your tax dollars at work, i suppose...
February 12th, 2020 at 11:02 PM ^
Definitely not my tax dollars
February 12th, 2020 at 11:24 PM ^
Their program covers the cost and more. If you want to complain about something there’s always the money being taken out for social security that you’ll never see
February 13th, 2020 at 9:08 AM ^
Socialism!
February 13th, 2020 at 5:20 AM ^
Tax dollars doesn't pay for his salary. If it irks you that a coach makes $5.5 mil, then the main thing to complain about it is why he makes that much while players just get room and board
February 13th, 2020 at 7:16 AM ^
Players get a little more than room and board, but I get where you are going with this.
February 13th, 2020 at 9:16 AM ^
They get a lot more then just room and board

Sorry as usual for the "6.7.0" shit. No idea why it gets auto-posted with every one of my posts/comments. I complained to the mods in the sticky thread, but was ignored. Heckuva job coding this site, Brownie.

Well, it didn’t do up on this post so .... wave tiny flag?
February 12th, 2020 at 10:37 PM ^
Hooray! Yea, for some reason it only does it on like 80% of my posts.
February 13th, 2020 at 8:48 AM ^
I was googling "6.7.0" trying to find the significance and couldn't. I chalked it up to me being out of the loop of another hilarious internet joke that I'll finally get when its over.
February 12th, 2020 at 11:04 PM ^
I remember the old days of 6.5.0. I was sure it was some internet meme that I didn’t understand.
When you get to 6.8.0 I’d start getting worried.
February 12th, 2020 at 11:18 PM ^
I agree. I do not like my 6 and 9 interrupted by a period. Given the trend 6.7 to 6.8 and so on.

Correction Mel "Mother" Tucker
February 12th, 2020 at 10:29 PM ^
So he is getting over $6M per career win?
Someone call the police, MSU got robbed!
February 12th, 2020 at 10:36 PM ^
Not if you ask them. Apparently they are "back" and Michigan is scared. That is why we are talking about them, and not the fact that they have been the laughing stock of the country for a while now.
February 12th, 2020 at 11:20 PM ^
They are doing some heavy rationalizing right now. They are our rival. Our #2 rival but certainly a rival. We would be talking about their coaching hire no matter who it was. They need to tell themselves we’re are nervous because if they accept that they are back to being an inferior team for 10+ years they won’t be able to deal with that.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:15 AM ^
We would be talking about their coaching hire no matter who it was.
Only because there was no way they were not going to royally screw the pooch. Which is fun to talk about.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:31 PM ^
Apparently they are "back" and Michigan is scared.
If by "back" they mean they just overpaid for a guy who's got 5 career wins for a mid-tier college program in the weakest of the Power 5 conferences, then yes, I guess Michigan State is back.
I'll assume that suggesting Michigan is "scared" is actually code for "not the least bit worried". Harbaugh's struggles against OSU is frustrating, but not having to worry about Sparty crowing about winning streaks and the like is a more than welcome change from recent history.
I can't wait for October 10th...

Local Lansing cops would probably just write a ticket for littering
February 12th, 2020 at 10:32 PM ^
Good for them. His recruiting class at Colorado this year would be good for 9th in the B1G. He won 5 games in his first season as a HC, with a lot more talent than he will inherit at MSU, and in a much easier conference.
Nobody was running or crawling to take the job at that dumpster fire, so they had to drop the big bag just to get someone halfway competent to show up.
February 12th, 2020 at 11:16 PM ^
I never thought Montez was a good P5 QB. Either way, MSU is dumb by caving to public perception. Just wait until this time next year when people start saying, "Just wait until he gets 'his guys' on campus." It will eventually morph into, "Just wait until his first recruiting class are all seniors."
February 12th, 2020 at 11:22 PM ^
If he doesn’t have some success in year 2 he probably never will. Michigan has to just keep punishing them head to head and he won’t overcome it. MSU can only be good if uofm falters. Harbaugh will keep the pressure on them and they won’t be able to take it.
February 13th, 2020 at 6:14 PM ^
So much truth Gucci. Don’t give them any footing or room to breath now that you have them back down.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:06 AM ^
Not sure they caved to perception... he seems qualified.... Saban pushed him too. This was a bigger hire than I thought they'd do... Dantonio did get overruled... this is Carr/DeBord all over again.
Its the good recruiting they are banking on, especially in Ohio... lets just hope he doesn't land Morrow from K.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:20 AM ^
How did dantonio get overruled? Dantonio had a glowing review of Tucker and has past coaching experience with him.
February 13th, 2020 at 8:50 AM ^
I'm pretty sure MD's choice was Tressel. As mentioned above, and I mentioned in another thread, this could turn into a Carr/DeBord/RR situation with MD still being in their AD.
February 13th, 2020 at 10:16 AM ^
He seems qualified based on what? The man has 1 year of college head coaching experience and only managed to win 5 games. Other than that he has bounced around the NCAA and NFL mostly as a position coach. This was a mediocre hire at best.
February 13th, 2020 at 7:44 AM ^
"Just wait until he gets 'his guys' on campus." It will eventually morph into, "Just wait until his first recruiting class are all seniors."
I feel like I have read this before, probably on this website.
February 12th, 2020 at 10:38 PM ^
Good for him. Overpaid for him but he got all the assurances you could want in a job that’s currently a tire fire
February 12th, 2020 at 10:43 PM ^
The only worry we should have is who he hires for his staff. MSU is giving him more money for his assistant pool than Harbaugh has. Only OSU is paying more in the B1G than what he's getting to spend.
February 12th, 2020 at 11:17 PM ^
That should be good for us if we're not interested in falling behind MSU. After losing Partridge and Bush Sr., maybe putting more $$$ in the assistant pool might help with retention.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:02 AM ^
You need a large budget for good deck chairs you can rearrange each year.
February 13th, 2020 at 6:09 AM ^
This is the key part of the hire. Tucker is a young coach who has proven to be a good positional coach and DC. His head coaching abilities are a work in progress due to the small sample size. What staae did to position the program for success is provide all of the money for creating his staff. If he brings Vince Marrow from Kentucky and other assistants known for recruiting they will be someone to watch closely. Beating them and beating them soundly over the next 2 years is important.
