GVSU New OC Suspended for Wanting to Dine with Hitler
KV: So you graduated from Drury with a degree in History, you’re a history guy. If you could have dinner with three historical figures, living or dead, who would they be? And I’m ruling out football figures.
MB: This is probably not going to get a good review, but I’m going to say Adolf Hitler. It was obviously very sad and he had bad motives, but the way he was able to lead was second-to-none. How he rallied a group and a following, I want to know how he did that. Bad intentions of course, but you can’t deny he wasn’t a great leader.

Jesus, Buddha and Moses are always the right answers to that question. Hitler is always the wrong answer.

Should've chosen Stalin.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:58 PM ^
At least the coach showed the good sense to pick International Holocaust Remembrance Day to pull this gem out of his brain.
January 27th, 2020 at 5:14 PM ^
Are you positive that's where this gem came from?
January 27th, 2020 at 5:32 PM ^
Maybe a different orifice.
January 27th, 2020 at 5:50 PM ^
Based on his comment, I am assuming that his brain is not exactly the biggest and best brain and is thus where the thought originated.

I did this exercise 20 years ago in college and I chose Marx. Wonder how that would go over today.
January 27th, 2020 at 5:32 PM ^
You would be feted for your moral relativism.
January 27th, 2020 at 5:47 PM ^
I think Marx would be a good answer. Mao, less so.

Dude should’ve taken up an English minor.
“Great” is uhh... not the proper adjective.
January 27th, 2020 at 6:11 PM ^
He chose his words correctly... Great does not always mean positive. The man was a deranged psychopath, but he damn near took over the world. You don't do that with average leadership skills. In this case, the adjective is describing the overall magnitude of Hitler's actions, not the relative morality of them. I certainly wouldn't want to have dinner with him though.

Godwin's Law has been rendered irrelevant.
January 27th, 2020 at 3:57 PM ^
This should end well!
January 27th, 2020 at 4:00 PM ^
How could he nazi this response coming a mile away?
January 27th, 2020 at 4:17 PM ^
Seems like someone could have warned him of the fuhry he would undoubtedly encounter.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:21 PM ^
Saying Hitler could lead like no one is like saying Jerry Sandusky was great around kids.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:30 PM ^
I pre-deleted several much worse Jerry Sandusky puns, but want credit for my ability to self-filter.

You're both reich
January 27th, 2020 at 4:46 PM ^
That's a third streich for you

This my favorite nazi song.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:01 PM ^
think about the players perspective? Our coach viewed Hitler as a great leader!? Yeah, can’t wait to play for him
January 27th, 2020 at 4:58 PM ^
He must be good at being an "Offensive" Coordinator. I'm not sure he understood his job title.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:03 PM ^
Charles Manson developed quite a following. I'd love to break bread with him.
January 27th, 2020 at 5:23 PM ^
here's what my dinner with hitler might look like...

This is like an outtake from Idiocracy. History major. Jesus.

Brady Hoke singed a Costco bib Deal?
January 27th, 2020 at 4:04 PM ^
I clicked through to see the full text of the interview. Other "interesting" tidbits from this:
- The interviewer essentially agreed with him on Hitler
- Dude's 2nd choice was JFK, and his 3rd was Christopher Columbus.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:09 PM ^
Dude's got a thing for genocidal maniacs.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:12 PM ^
Not a huge fan of JFK, but that's a little harsh.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:20 PM ^
I was gonna make a similar joke.
Something like "he's got a thing for genocidal maniacs .... and explorers."
January 27th, 2020 at 4:15 PM ^
The interviewer said, "The way he was able to get people to rally around him was crazy." That's not the same thing as agreeing with his choice.
January 27th, 2020 at 5:29 PM ^
It kinda is.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
Hey, at least he didn't say Jeffery Dahmer.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:19 PM ^
He was very persuasive and knew how to motivate young men.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:56 PM ^
His ability to prepare young men is unparalleled.
January 27th, 2020 at 5:29 PM ^
True, I was talking about the dining part though.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:07 PM ^
Buh bye
January 27th, 2020 at 4:07 PM ^
Americans no longer study history, half truths and rumors from social media have supplanted scholarly researched history.
Hitler was an incompetent clown who led his country to ruin while killing tens of millions. Hardly a guy you'd call a great leader.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:22 PM ^
Where is the strategic thinking in starting a war you have absolutely no chance of winning? If he had stopped at Poland, or Belgium, the international community probably would have allowed it. Maybe even take the Alsace region and politically annex a couple others.
He was a genocidal maniac bent on war and nothing else.
January 27th, 2020 at 5:15 PM ^
Lots of things--like invading Russia--seem like great ideas when you're all hopped up on meth. The guy wasn't a genius. He was a meglomaniac though. And a fucking monster. He merely exploited Germany's history of racism/anti-Semitism after a defeat in a catastrophic war and amid economic devastation. That isn't 3 dimensional chess. It's just race baiting. I'd rather have dinner with ANYONE ELSE IN HISTORY.

It isn’t that difficult to blame certain vulnerable populations for your issues when your country is Zimbabwe status.
Did he build a war machine and change the way modern war at the time was conducted with the blitzkrieg etc.
Sure, that’s where it ends. See nonsensical London bombings etc. But again, it isn’t difficult to drum up that type of support when your population is destroyed by the consequences of WW1 and you’re scapegoating one of your own for said troubles. You see leaders do this all throughout history.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:23 PM ^
Well history does speak for itself.

We are living in Don DeLillo's White Noise.
January 27th, 2020 at 4:08 PM ^
Even if you think Hitler was a good dancer or a great painter or an excellent public speaker, you're better off racking your brain for someone else with those same qualities to dine with. Also, you may be thinking about Hitler too much.

Say what you will about the tenets of national socialism but at least its an ethos.
