"Metellus Reveals How His 73-Yard Pick-Six Almost Never Happened"
An Mgoblue bit that I didn't see discussed. (Metellus asked to be taken out of the game because of cramping, but Partridge said no.) https://mgoblue.com/news/2018/9/15/football-kornacki-metellus-reveals-how-his-73-yard-pick-six-almost-never-happened.aspx

The cramping issue is getting out of control.
September 20th, 2018 at 10:10 AM ^
I think it's due to the uncommon humidity in September. I mean, it's 75 degrees outside, but 85% humidity. That's not common for mid-September.
September 20th, 2018 at 10:14 AM ^
Agree. Saturday is supposed to be in the Mid-60s with dew points in the low 50's. If they have a cramping issue in that, then it is a problem.
September 20th, 2018 at 12:12 PM ^
Seriously, thank you for referencing dew points and not humidity.
A little pet peeve of mine since I work in an industry that deals with dew points.
September 20th, 2018 at 4:08 PM ^
Humidity isn't a term that should bother you...it's just a generic term for describing how humid it is. There are several ways to measure it, and at least imo there is no implication that humidity means "relative humidity" specifically. Dew point and relative humidity are both measures of humidity. As are lesser-known quantities specific humidity and absolute humidity. Dew point is definitely most appropriate for this situation though.
September 20th, 2018 at 10:18 AM ^
Exactly. I have been saying this exact thing. It's been hot, humid and miserable outside. It will be a lot cooler this weekend. Should see a difference.

Jackass much?

I've lived in Michigan almost my entire life and it being hot and humid in September is nothing new.
September 20th, 2018 at 10:25 AM ^
I don't think it being hot is new as we've had plenty of Septembers where the temps are still in the high 70s. However, the humidity is not something I recall too often. It's been sticky and gross.
September 20th, 2018 at 10:34 AM ^
According to weatherspark this is pretty normal for September.

Are you really going to die on this hill? What would you suggest? I mean, I am pretty sure the players are well-hydrated and eat a decent diet, which are two of the absolute best things you can do to prevent cramping. Would you, oh, have them lather up in Icy Hot?
September 20th, 2018 at 12:16 PM ^
Are you always this snarky or is it just that time of the month?
There is no hill to die on, people keep saying how hot and humid it is and I've presented evidence that it's nothing out of the ordinary. Do I think we need to make a big deal out of all the cramping, no, but I think it's something that needs to be explored because it's happening more frequently than I can ever remember.
September 20th, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
There is some irony in a guy complaining about cramping trotting the tired, retrograde insult of "time of the month."
I get it. You don't like players having cramps. But you seem profoundly unhappy with the current state of the program generally, and you really are spending a ton of time arguing about the weather.

You're too much of a joke to dignify with a serious response, so I'll just say watching you cry is giving me great enjoyment.

September 20th, 2018 at 4:13 PM ^
Yeah, no that article doesn't say anything about dew points in the 70s and above. Their humidity chart isn't exactly very informative about where the 1st and 3rd weeks' gameday dew points lie in terms of "normal" for Michigan.
September 20th, 2018 at 1:07 PM ^
August is usually hot with higher dew points. The team must have been suffering cramps throughout fall camp!
September 20th, 2018 at 12:41 PM ^
My birthday is in mid September and it's not uncommon for it to be humid at this time. Humidity makes me Cranky :)

75 degrees and 85% humidity is miserable? I live in the South and that is called Spring. 95 degrees with 99% humidity is miserable.
September 20th, 2018 at 11:41 AM ^
With you on that on brother... Charlotte is still 90 freaggn degrees and it is Sept 20th... Would not call it miserable though... Extended sun dress season...
September 20th, 2018 at 1:13 PM ^
+1 for sun dress season. The cowboy boots addition (in NC, anyway) is a nice touch. Whoever invented that look must be thanked.
September 20th, 2018 at 6:36 PM ^
95 degrees with 99% humidity is not realistically possible anywhere in the US....
September 23rd, 2018 at 11:28 PM ^
Ok. 95% dumbass
September 20th, 2018 at 11:40 AM ^
Maybe? But that's not uncommon for many parts of the country where football is being played. Perhaps the players just aren't used to it?
September 20th, 2018 at 12:18 PM ^
Yea, it's supposed to be 88 degrees in NW Ohio today, very unusual for it almost being October..
September 20th, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
I don't want to be a back in the day guy, but...
When I was an underclassman living in pre-air conditioned South Quad, we always had about 10 days of brutally hot and humid weather in September. There is something odd going on throughout football. Living in the far southwest now and watching the pac coast games, there is a rash of cramping going on more3 then I recall. Interesting if there is some "new" trend in preparation for games that leads to a lower hydration level creating the environment for cramping. Group thoughts?
September 20th, 2018 at 2:56 PM ^
My freshman September in 1971 was spent in the un-air conditioned confines of Markley, and for the first week or so it was fucking miserable.

September 20th, 2018 at 10:20 AM ^
Can we start another thread on why the players are cramping so much? This issue has captivated me.
September 20th, 2018 at 10:45 AM ^
I wonder if there is some new supplement that teams are using that causes it. I remember creatine causing cramping if you weren't hydrated enough.
It's not the weather because teams in the south have been dealing with that every year.
September 20th, 2018 at 11:42 AM ^
Interesting! In general, I would have expected Creatine to reduce cramping. Although if you don't give yourself enough water for it to soak up, it does make sense.
September 20th, 2018 at 12:56 PM ^
The team needs some deer antler spray. I hear that helps.
September 20th, 2018 at 10:29 AM ^
If he hadn't made that pick and in particular if he hadn't scored, the second half would have had a lot more of a "oh no here we go again" feel to it.
September 20th, 2018 at 10:30 AM ^
First time poster here so be gentle:
DAE think this cramping phenomenon is just ludicrous!?
September 20th, 2018 at 10:37 AM ^
As my college rowing coach used to say, "You're not hydrated unless you pee clear from the day before the race through the day after."
September 20th, 2018 at 11:10 AM ^
guys served with in the Army had the same theory....regarding piss tests.
September 20th, 2018 at 11:39 AM ^
If I drank enough water to piss clear for 24 hours before and after an intense physical competition, I'd have to get a catheter; otherwise I'd have to take a leak every five minutes.
