OT - East Coast Snow Venting Thread
Live in NJ and just got finished shoveling 12"+ snow for at least the 6th time this winter and this stuff was by far the heaviest. Its also suppose to snow again tonight. I can honestly say this is the worst winter I've ever seen in Jersey and worse than anything I remember in Ann Arbor except maybe Winter 2005.
I encourage others to commiserate as the old saying goes "misery enjoys company."

Get a snow blower- or a tank

I was glad I shoveled early because after the rain started the snow got heavy. Hoping it's not too terrible tomorrow morning.

Yeah I love how everyone here decides to abandon their car on the side of the road and walk during a snow/ice storm. Pro tip: don't do that.

We didn't even have school yesterday. They cancelled it the night before. Most of RTP released around noon.

30 degrees and sunny feels amazing in AA right now.

in Ann Arbor.................but we may see the big thaw next week leading to the big flood.
Ann Arbor no longer has pot holes........they are really pot canals, some about 50 feet long.

happily staying home today outside of boston. town instituted a parking ban, though, so I did have to go outside to switch sides of the street. took the opportunity to go next door and get more beer, so all in all, it turned out ok.

Then again, this is my favorite winter in a long time. I have a few friends who agree with me. I understand utility costs, driving conditions, and added snow chores. But I readily accept those for the aesthetics. Slush is minimal. The white stays pearly, not brown-black. Every tree looks like it's been stolen from a poem. And it's so cold that each step makes the snow squeak, not smush. This is my favorite. I'll be ready for spring when it comes and will think just as positively of it as this, but I'm not going to forfeit my appreciation of my world and region in the interim.

on squeezing in a ski weekend in the next few weeks, I have to agree. Michigan ski conditions (sorry to say, I just don't have time to ski the Rockies this year) are better than they've been in years.
Once I get my fix, though, it can all melt away, the sooner the better.

Exactly. It hasn't been a depressing winter. It's been a beautiful one, if you can tolerate doing the driveway every other day.

I've been strangely satisfied by all the cold and snow. It feels "right" to me, I don't care for the wet/mild winters. This type of winter is what I remember growing up, much more than what we've had the last decade or so. Give me bitter, dry cold and snow, I get used to it fast and then it's all gravy. I love it. The only down sides, as you said, are the heating costs and having to contend with idiots on the roads. I don't think driving in it is bad on its own, it's just when you add the unwashed masses who just dont. know. how. to. drive. that it gets bad.

Commute in to work wasn't too bad. The subway was running normally, just that the icy snow and high winds made walking from the subway to my office feel like getting stabbed in the face by a million tiny knives.

No need to shovel in the city... Although you do have to watch out for crazed reckless snow plows

I'll be sure to tell all the school children here in the city that you two guys sure are tougher than they are.
February 13th, 2014 at 2:54 PM ^
and working out for two hours, lifting weights, running/rowing/biking, etc getting their heart rate way up, sweating buckets, and ending up pleasantly fatigued will then complain bitterly about shoveling snow.
February 13th, 2014 at 3:41 PM ^
I don't even need to look presentable to shovel snow.
February 13th, 2014 at 5:35 PM ^
The difference is that there are no women wearing sports bras in my driveway during snowstorms.
February 13th, 2014 at 8:31 PM ^
Well sounds like you need to work on that. You're the MAGNUS, fergodsakes.
February 13th, 2014 at 9:44 PM ^
Good point. Girls in sports bras should be lining up to stand in my driveway. During snowstorms. For free.
February 13th, 2014 at 9:58 PM ^
Make it happen.
February 13th, 2014 at 11:07 PM ^
At first glance, I thought this was a refernce to The Magus (LINK), which would have been strangely appropriate. Especially if Magnus's driveway is lined with dick sculptures wearing animal masks.

Upper 20s and sunny right now though...we'll take it here.

Wish there was football on to watch on days like this. Bored without it. Happy snow day to all on the east coast!
February 13th, 2014 at 3:05 PM ^
I like it better than raking and mowing. It's cold and the work warms me up so I'm feeling comfortable. After I am done it looks so cool, the driveway is wide and there is a nice path for the mailman/paperboy. Remember paperboy for sega. What an awesome game!!!

Fergodsakes, make sure your son doesn't even think about doing what a neighbor of mine did a couple of weeks ago. He was using his snow blower, and stuck his hand into it to clear some snow out—while the damn thing was still running.
He ended up in the hospital having emergency reconstructive surgery. Numerous broken bones, sliced tendons, ligaments, etc. Luckily he didn't lose any fingers... or his whole damn hand.
February 13th, 2014 at 5:25 PM ^
and your neighbor was lucky not to lose hand or digits.
We're OK - my son is pretty sure-headed, and since he does our neighbors walks and driveways, I suppose he keeps them from being injured in the bargain. Win-win.
February 13th, 2014 at 7:13 PM ^
Sounds like a candidate for the Darwin Award. What's next for the idiot, sharpening mower blades while they are running?
February 14th, 2014 at 10:52 AM ^
Another neighbor drove him to the hospital, and she said the guy was as distressed by his own carelessness as he was about the actual injury.

...for you guys stuck in North America. The scary thing is that these winter storms are all being engineered. Someone powerful obviously hates warm weather. White Walkers, perhaps they are real?
February 13th, 2014 at 4:20 PM ^
Sure they are... they're the elderly retirees you see cruising through the mall first thing in the morning, wearing their sparkling white walking shoes and Wilford Brimley moustaches.

Up here we wish we had more snow. Last time I checked we weren't even at a hundred inches for the year yet.

we're getting a ft in GF and no loss of school.
