2014...you have failed us. No but seriously, things have been going so good lately. I was not ready to see this thread when I refreshed. This is tough to hear.
February 13th, 2014 at 9:58 AM ^
...that torn ACLs are so prevalent now? Is it the increased size/weight of these guys causing additional stress on joints, ligaments and tendons? Is it related to the types of workouts and conditioning they're doing? Has this always been a problem over the years or is it exponentially increasing?
I just don't get it.

MGoBlog Circle of Blame on ACL Tears
Step 1: Blame Al Borges
Result: Al Borges has been fired so is unlikely personally responsible for current ACL tears. Suspicion over past injuries remain.
Step 2: Blame Dave Brandon
Result: Dave Brandon unlikely to be wrecking ACL's personally due to corporate jet setting and influence peddling for University
Step 3: Blame S&C Program Coaches
Result: Wellman appears generally well regarded within his profession but still under suspicion
Step 4: Blame Adidas
Result: Adidas is probable culprit
Step 5: Engage in circular logic. Accordingly, because Dave Brandon retained S&C coaches and signed Adidas contract he is reasonably at fault for current ACL issues.

Yup, pretty much.
February 13th, 2014 at 11:04 AM ^
how desperate Nussmeier was for the job. Knowing all the above, he still left Alabama and the SEC to come to a cold, snowy, Ann Arbor, where the staff conspires to injure players. In addition, Michigan/A2 really needs some nearby medical infrastructure, so that people who understand medicine/surgery/human bodies can be consulted.
February 13th, 2014 at 10:00 AM ^
This ish cray. We have a crazy amount of ACL tears recently. What gives (other than ligaments)?

What the hell. I'm no trainer or S & C expert, but could this be freakish bad luck, or poor training techniques? Get well soon Jake.
February 13th, 2014 at 10:11 AM ^
The company and the NFL deny it, but there are studies showing an increase in lateral knee injuries on FieldTurf as compared to grass. Grass breaks, FieldTurf doesn't. It's tough to tell now, as many programs with grass fields have FieldTurf practice facilities. I will look for citations on the injury rates, I have some on my other laptop.

A lot of folks blaming/questioning conditioning...
I tore my ACL many years ago and, due to my active lifestyle, tend to have "flare-ups" whether it be soreness, weakness, etc. In dealing with doctors, therapists, and trainers, I've learned the best way to help prevent/condition/rehabilitate ACL and other significant knee-ligament injuries is basically strengthening the surrounding muscles, namely the quadricep.
That being said, I don't know of many conditioning and strength-based workout regimens that do not feature "squads" or "deadlifts," a combination of the two, and other such Olympic style power and strength based lifts as a staple. So unless Wellman teaches the worst lifting form ever, I don't know if that is the ideal tree you want to bark up.

is still available correct?
February 13th, 2014 at 10:18 AM ^
His regular redshirt is available and a medical redshirt is obviously an option. If his prognosis isn't until week 6 or beyond.. I would prefer we reshirt the kid and still have 3 remaining years on the table. Either way, the kid will work his "Butt" off to recover as quick as possible. Get well soon Jake!
February 13th, 2014 at 10:55 AM ^
the only way you can use a 'medical' redshirt is if you have already burned your regular redshirt. So injury or not, would still count as a redshirt (in the hypothetical situation that he sits the season).
February 13th, 2014 at 5:02 PM ^
sure Gardner got a medical redshirt without burning his regular redshirt
February 13th, 2014 at 9:18 PM ^
it was a little confusing with how I phrased that. What I meant is that for example even though Gardner's redshirt was medical, he would not have another redshirt year available to him. If the medical redshirt comes first, it becomes the de facto redshirt for the player.

Time for Nussmeier to go 5-wide or back to that Washington spread-to-run he ran. No need to force the TE on the field now.
Get well soon Jake!
Can we update the quote at the top of the page to

This was shaping up to be a real position of strength for this team; while we do have some depth at this position, this is a real blow.
He must have actually hurt it in 2013, and is just now reporting it, right?

I think Magnus may also be referring to the 2 dozen or so other people in this thread who have previously questioned our S&C staff and training methods. Another "WTF S&C?" question at this point seems, well, -1 redundant.
