2014 BCS National Championship Open Thread
Last one, heald in the Grand Daddy of them all!
Florida State is favored by 13 on a neutral field, by some ESPN bottom line metric. Will Jameis Winston with the Heisman and MNC and end the SEC's run of 6 straight?
Auburn is the self-proclaimed team of destiny. Will they have one more miracle tonight?
Line: FSU - 10.5
Over/Under: 67.5

SLIGHT MOD EDIT - Not really OT for our purposes. We'll make this the open thread. - LSA

are playing soccer, including my daughter. Happy you can declare your hostility on the internets, though. Didn't know this required a Michigan degree nowadays.

Easy big fella.

If you are fan of football strategy, watch this game on ESPNEWS megacast. They have Briles, Sumlin, Spielman, etc watching and commenting. This is pretty awesome stuff. The insights there are pretty fascinating.

Much better than listening to Brent and Herbie.

Don't let Auburn set up and disguise the coverages. Just go fast, don't sub and keep them off balance.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:32 PM ^
That was one hell of a fast LB blitz.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:33 PM ^
Press and Blitz
Heisman Trophy winner or not, press and blitz will rattle college QBs almost every time. Now watch Auburn seize the game with a score here!

FSU comes out and looks terrible to start. This could get ugly.

Auburn's defense is the story of this game.

How the heck did Georgia nearly beat Auburn?

January 6th, 2014 at 10:37 PM ^
That's not a penalty.
Edit: The middle is so wide open. Auburn just has to stop committing stupid penalties.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:37 PM ^
FSU not getting any pressure on QB. Kiss of Death on 3rd downs.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:39 PM ^
...even if we had SEC type size and ability on defense, we have no one on our staff to generate that excitement.
I hate the word "swag," I mean I DESPISE it...but that's what they have. It's a confidence and an intimidation.
We've got a bunch of nice guys as coaches.
I'm not saying you need a dickhead. But you needs someone who's firey, who's going to get your guys hype and flying around the ball.
SEC defenses have that, we have guys that you'd let your daughter date.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:39 PM ^
Roy Manning? Not saying one coach makes a huge difference, but he definitely gets players hyped. It's just hard when he is the only one. A young guy coming in to replace Fred Jackson would help a lot.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:44 PM ^
But he's still a Michigan grad and a gentleman. He's definitely the closest.
And I think you've seen him show the most emtion and have the biggest influence.
But at the same time, you can only do some much, it's the culture. It's almost frowned upon.
We don't have very many guys on the team that even play like that. Like I said, it's guys you'd let your daughter date.
You don't need thugs, you don't need dummies, but you need ENERGY. There's a difference, I don't want to get what I'm saying to come off as we need a bunch of southern kids.
We don't have any ENERGY. We have no one who's raises the level of the team emotionally.
We're ho hum, THIS IS MICHIGAN.

Have you actually attended a practice and interacted with our coaches, or are you pulling this all out of your ass?

Watch MSU and watch our defense. Over the last 3 years, 2 of which we had solid defenses.
It's a completely different atmosphere.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:43 PM ^
All those coaches had strong personalities. The nice guy approach doesn't get you fired up to go to war.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:52 PM ^
And that's a perfect example, because it proves that you don't need "thugs" or "southern kids" or anything like that.
You just need some emotion and passion and FIRE.
Those guys all have it.
It doesn't even have to come from the head coach. So I'm not saying Hoke has to have it. Malzahn doesn't do it much.
But you have to promote a culture of fire and energy even if you don't have it as a coach. Look at Dantonio. He's not jumping all over the place, but he gets his rocks off to guys flying around. And his defenses play like it.

That is a good question. If I had to guess I would say he returns to Auburn. But I have not heard much about his draft stock or anything like that.

Looks like he is not even projected as one of the top 15 QBs right now. Obviously that can change with a National Champuonship and so on. He also reportedly runs a legit 4.4 and he played DB at Georgia before. So he would quickly become one of the fastest QBs in the NFL. Plus, he's a pretty decent passer.
I still think based on his projections right now that he will return. But, he could be very good next year. Alabama will have to replace their QB of the last 50 years and more offensive lineman already again. So it is very possible he goes 2-0 against 'Bama.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:50 PM ^
He wasn't even a QB at UGA.
He doesn't look at the WR half the time he throws.
He plays in an offense that is suitable to his skillset and limits his reads (i.e. Denard under Rich Rod).

Megacast. The picture-in-picture is definitely a user-experience kink they need to iron out for next time they do this -- which I hope is more often next season.

a smaller thumbnail. The two views are virtually the same when the play is running, so having two view that are almost the same size thereby making each view half-size is silly.
