Ah, Coach Hoke. Good. Get that NC ring in the press photo. Good move. This article basically sums up my reason for calling this week "Ugh Week."

Also, the narrative that we're the smug, arrogant ones is really stupid.  It should be reconsidered after the past few years, but I'm sure it won't.

MSU fans are talking way more shit these days than Michigan fans ever did.  We talk a lot of shit, but about 95% of it is directed at our own program.  Plus, there's nothing more arrogant to me in college sports than MSU's whole "you can't root for a college team unless you went to college at that school" / "Walmart Wolverine" thing.

Despite all the claims that we will be beaten Saturday, I feel it will be different. I think we put up a ton of points and they can't keep up with their broke ass offense. JMFR and Clark will usher in backups as they destroy starters. This is pay back for the "great personal foul fest" two years ago, and Karma is a bitch.

and whether you are up to the challenge. I think the article intrinsically captures the attitude of both fan bases and their feelings about this game and rivalry in general.

Can we be honest in noting that rarely has Michigan spanked little brother except after clockgate, to me one of the most stinging losses to MSU. But there have been others like the late comeback wins in the 90's and the famous end zone trip of Desmond that was not called on the fourth down.

In recent years, I felt that MSU after beating Michigan under Dantonio at Michigan Stadium for the first time felt they arrived, and that the late game collapses that had marked their play during the Carr era had given them new life and the confidence to claim that the tide has turned.

In fact, there are still two annoying contentions by MSU fans, one, that having carved out a 4-game winning streak, now made their program dominant in the series, and two, that if you didn't attend Michigan you aren't really permitted to be a UM fan.

I assume that thousands of Sparty faithful  will be appropriately donned at their erector set stadium tomorrow who aren't MSU grads and bought their green and white gear from Dick's sporting goods or Meijer supermarket, and I could care less. You can root for whomever you choose. The fact is most of MSU's student fan base and alumni probably couldn't cite much history of their program outside the recent winning streak, because beating Michigan was their season's principal goal for so long, and this is such a rare feat it usually has only occurred in the past during Rose Bowl seasons, and Sparty hasn't been there since the first Bush administration.

I do think Dantonio has brought an Ohio mindeset to the program about this game, and the fan base obviously feeds off this. I know this is true, because my Sparty wife keeps saying so.

I know that losing to MSU is harder to accept than losing to Ohio because Michigan is a more complete team.

Michigan fans inherently know this because we know that MSU cannot recruit the same level of talent, which means their team has to be constituted to reflect this. And it is. Dantonio just brought Tressel ball to EL, and whether the style is boring or not, as long as the team wins, who cares.

There will be no real tipping point in this series until MSU asserts itself as a national player in the postseason, and Dantonio hasn't done that. He's got some great senior leaders on his defense this year, but making the leap from the shadow of Michigan by beating the Wolverines on your home field, in a game that you are favored, won't change any longterm perceptions.

Michigan measures the rivalry by the annual challenge, but it doesn't sweat image perception based on the outcome of one or two games played in EL. The media can frame it any way it wants. But the players decide it on the field every year, just as intended.

Beating Sparty is more significant than say, beating illinois, but I would rather lose to Sparty than lose to OSU (obviously), ND or even Wisconsin.

But I moved from MI during Carr's last two years. I moved back right after RR was fired. Leaving MI when Sparty was little brother and coming back to MSU's superiority complex, I have to say I would rather beat sparty before Ohio. I never thought I would say that ever, but after the success Sparty has had, their chest thumping egos are obnoxious! I want them to shut up more than anything!

This. Once again, all we get is the sense of inferiority the writer feels; the article isn't about the Spartans, it is about Michigan.

Writers like this one are barking up the wrong tree.  MSU will never get where its fans want it to go by beating Michigan, even if they do it twenty times in a row.  No one outside the state of Michigan gives a shit about the record of MSU versus Michigan.   MSU needs to get to, and win in, some national-venue games before anyone, even in the state, give them the credit they want so desperately to believe that they have earned.

The way for them to shake the "li'l bro" image isn't to focus on how they are doing against big bro, but rather to forget about family rivalries and compete against the larger world.  Frankly, even having grown up in Michigan, I don't much care about the UM-MSU game, except as it affects the Big Ten championship.

"The Wolverines hate that. Because, for so long, their words about respecting MSU were empty."

I have to say that this column had "yet another aggrieved Spartan" written all over it.

That, and even I had to wince at the commas at some points. He did try to make it sound rather dramatic at points, however, so some recognition should be given to the effort....actually, not really.

Have been shaky at times. M owns the 27 for 27, staee had a D out scoring their O. M was giving the ball away to uconn right and left. staee could barely claw ahead of illinois save for a telegraphed interception for TD. Each team was really close to winning their single loss, staee put in an ice cold QB for the final series against ND, M makes a field goal or makes an INT or PBU... For most of my life, M sort of looked past this game, and got surprised a few times along the way. I like the fact that this game commands full attention. The winner of this game has a controllable path to Indy, the loser has to take some of their goals down from the dry erase board. I think that's better to have a lot of focus. I've been saying for a couple weeks that we can run with anybody...and that we don't get mentally beaten even after the results of bad play. I can't predict what's going to happen Saturday. It could go blowout either way, it could be a 60 minute grinder...keys in my mind are not turning the ball over on O, and being able to slow down the run on early downs, and get pressure on passing downs. Time will tell. Back to staee possibly going 6 for 7...im going to look to subsequent years, their D is loaded with seniors, M is a young team on the rise. After Cousins and the other Denard, it's up to staee to develop another unsung recruit onto an NFL talent.

it's disrespectful.

Obviously, the article touches a nerve. Herd response here, so far. Maybe someone thoughtful will yet chime in. Sometimes I don't think there's a lot of thoughtful left in this place.

One interestingly ambiguous item toward the bottom of the piece:

"What’s happened over the last few years has made this rivalry interesting, its given a voice to the voiceless Spartan fan. It’s forced the Wolverines to realize past dominance has an expiration date.

But this is still the makings of one terrific coaching hire by MSU and one mistake by Michigan."

A suggestion that we may have erred in hiring Hoke? I'd say the jury remains out. The demonizing of Borges, in some ways, has been about everyone looking for a way to express their fear while remaining in lockstep with Hoke and program. The human herd sometimes works that way.

MSU has become our equal* on the gridiron and basketball court, and calling them little brother. . . rings increasingly hollow. It may not stay that way--we've certainly got more resources for the long haul. But you have to admire their achievement.

*We'll know they believe it themselves when they stop burning down EL after every big loss.

I'm accusing M fans of feeling superior when they no longer really have that right. That's just a little too easy, and kinda primes you for a fall.

I get that most people just want to come on here, go hurhur, tell you what brand of beer they're drinking, and proclaim their allegiance to Meeshigan. But the OP actually asked for some thinking; you used to get a lot of that around here.

Enjoy the game, btw. I know we all want Michigan to kick their asses. Four generations of my family UM grads and some cousins who all went to MSU. Tomorrow is for all the family marbles.

Since the dynamic of the rivalry and every damned thing else changed with the hiring of Rodriguez, I think that is the mistake he is referring to. He is pretty dense as a journalist; hell the op ed section of the paper publishes letters from State fans complaining about him. One even accused him of being an undercover Michigan fan.
