Wednesday Night College Hoops Open Thread
MSU on a point a minute pace v. Minnesota (13 points in 13 minutes). Unfortunately Minnesota is tracking at 0.46 points per minute (6 points in 13 minute).
Shot clocks must be malfunctioning.

13 at the half. The halftime guy just called it the worst 20 minutes Kansas has played since Bill Self arrived.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:56 PM ^
Wowzer. TCU is garbage, to say the least.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:53 PM ^
Setting back the game of basketball 60 years and making people remember fondly the "four corners" offense and curse the shot clock.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:58 PM ^
Over half of their 13 first half points came off free throws. Yikes.
They are shooting 13%. Derp.
February 6th, 2013 at 10:07 PM ^
That's what the pundits were saying last week, using KU as an example.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:50 PM ^
I've got a sinking feeling about that MSU game. They're a perfect 14-0 at home and can grind out games. They played Indiana better than we did at Assembly Hall, I think we lose, unfortunately.
February 6th, 2013 at 10:02 PM ^
Oh ye of little faith.
We've ground out games against Pitt, tOSU (home and a missed three-pointer away)
February 6th, 2013 at 10:16 PM ^
Minnesota also easily beat them at home and we won comfortably there. See it goes both ways. It's probably not worth trying to extrapolate results from one game to another in college basketball.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:26 PM ^
Uhh they played Indiana three points better. Btw, what are we at home?
February 6th, 2013 at 9:53 PM ^
Iowa clawed back into the game. Down 2 at the half. This game would be huge for their tournament profile.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:59 PM ^
Yes it would. Unfortunately I don't think they've got enough possible wins the rest of the season to get in the "Last Four In" or above. I could be wrong, but they even showed a bit ago three of their losses (two very recent) were each 3 point losses that they were up with ~1 minute to go i.e should have been wins. Add at least two of those to their win column and they're totall a Tourney team still but at this point I'm not sure they can muster enough wins to get in.
February 6th, 2013 at 10:13 PM ^
Actually, the only game that is probably out of the question for them is @ Indiana. Here's their remaining schedule
02/06/13 | at Wisconsin * | Madison, Wis. | 8:06 PM |
02/09/13 | vs. Northwestern * | Iowa City, Iowa | 3:36 PM |
02/14/13 | at Penn State * | University Park, Pa. | 8:00 PM |
02/17/13 | vs. Minnesota * | Iowa City, Iowa | 1:06 PM |
02/21/13 | at Nebraska * | Lincoln, Neb. | 8:00 PM |
02/27/13 | vs. Purdue * | Iowa City, Iowa | 7:36 PM |
03/02/13 | at Indiana * | Bloomington, Ind. | 6:30 PM |
03/05/13 | vs. Illinois * | Iowa City, Iowa | 6:06 PM |
03/09/13 | vs. Nebraska * | Iowa City, Iowa | 1:21 PM |
Other than Indiana, there's no game where they should be outmatched. There's the potential, if they win this, to win 8 of their last 9. Their main issue is a lack of quality wins.
February 6th, 2013 at 10:56 PM ^
Iowa up 3 with :30 left.
Wisconsin ties it up on a 3 that bounced in off front rim.
Iowa gets last shot.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:16 PM ^
Now double overtime. Win or lose, Iowa's doing us a nice little favor by tiring Wisconsin out.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:28 PM ^
They may run out of numbers on the Kohl Center scoreboard. Who knows if they ever bothered to install anything above 60.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:29 PM ^
Wisconsin into the night. Can we make it 3, Hawkeyes??
February 7th, 2013 at 12:21 AM ^
Agree about their remaining schedule, they've definitely gone through their rough part already. Tonight actually would have been huge for them. They pretty much need to win, say, 6 of eight and take a BTT game. I would say that that is very feasible and they almost should be able to do that but I've watched enough of them to probably think it won't happen. They'll lose one or two they should win e.g. tonight @ Wiscy, home against Sparty, @ Purdue, @ Minnesota.
February 6th, 2013 at 10:01 PM ^
In addition to the Kansas/TCU "game", Stanford is on the road against a top 10 team, is shooting less than 30% from the floor, and is up at halftime.
Creighton got blown out. Cincinnati lost to Providence. Not the most glamorous night for college hoops.
February 6th, 2013 at 10:05 PM ^
Last couple weeks have been interesting. The Dog Days of Late-January/February!?
February 6th, 2013 at 10:19 PM ^
More KU horror:
21.4% from the field.
0 of 6 from three.
58.3% from the stripe.
This game needs a mercy killing.

That's about as crazy as Florida being down 27 late in 2nd half as a 11 point road fave.
Don't wanna react too much to one result but Kansas has been dodging bullets for a while now, alternatively Florida was blowing teams out before their red flag game. Methinks Kansas is more like 2/3 seed material while Floriday will recover and is still a likely #1

Florida's main problem is that they now have a bad loss (not nearly as bad as this KU loss would be, mind you) and they have very limited ability to improve their profile because the SEC's so bad. They only have 3 games left against RPI top 50 teams (and two of those are against UK who's 47). They also have two games against RPI 200+ teams. They pretty much have to win out and win the SEC tourney to have a chance at a 1 seed. They'll end the season with 1 win against a RPI top 25 team. I just don't think that's going to get them a 1 seed, when you're going to have multiple big 10 teams with multiple top 25 wins, Duke, Miami, and Arizona (who beat Florida head to head).

Tonight's action has been a helpful reminder, after our last couple of somewhat shaky outings, that the level of play in college basketball is not always as high as we think.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:17 PM ^
Gonna have to shoot some free throws in practice

LOL Kansas. Also LOL Florida (actually not really, they just had a weirdly bad game).
I just hope, come March, that Michigan, IU, Ohio, and MSU are all in different brackets, and play for the all-B1G Final Four. I can dream.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:28 PM ^
TCU now 1-8 in the Big 12
February 6th, 2013 at 11:41 PM ^
It's their first in-conference Big 12 win. Ever.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:29 PM ^
Going to be a battle for the last 2 one seeds. 2 Big Ten teams looks like a lock. After that you have the ACC winner, Big East winner, Arizona, Florida, and maybe even Gonzaga.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:38 PM ^
If Michigan, IU, OSU, and MSU continue to hold serve at home, I think we could see the Big 10 get 2 1-seeds and 2 2-seeds.
Kansas has good wins but now an atrocious loss. Florida doesn't have any good wins (their best is Marquette). Duke and/or Miami will almost certainly get a 1 or 2. Arizona will likely get one. Beyond that: Gonzaga? The Big East champ?
Poor Iowa.
February 7th, 2013 at 9:30 AM ^
I don't see Miami getting a one unless they win the regular season and tournament titles. Their best wins were over Duke and NC St. and both came with those teams missing top players. Other than that there best win is over MSU and they also have a loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Arizona I think can, but they will likely need to either win out or win the Pac12 tournament to do so. UCLA, Oregon, Colorado, and ASU are all very capable of beating them.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:35 PM ^
Damn, Iowa had this game in regulation and just let it slip out of their grasp
February 7th, 2013 at 9:16 AM ^
Well, Minnesota teased me, aftering being down by 10-11 they would consistently pull to within 4, but never quite overcome that [sounds a lot like what happend to us @IU].
And now, sadly, we are tied with MSU for 2nd place.
