Commence the binge drinking. Michigan loses, the Lions can't remedy the situation with a win because of a bye week, and my fantasy team will lose a must win matchup tomorrow. FML. I am off to get alchohol poisoning.

is right. I am married with children, but they are going to see some old school drinking tonight. Like I want a hangover, a bad one. I choose this path over cutting myself.

I honestly wasn't expecting to win this game. Had no idea what to think. Losing like that leaves a bad taste in the mouth, though.
November 5th, 2011 at 6:10 PM ^
Meh, after MSU I regrounded my expectations back to what I hoped for at the begining of the year. If we take 2 of the next 3 I'll be thrilled, if we take just OSU I'll be thrilled, if we drop the rest of the season, grumble grumble last three years grumble grumble.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:23 PM ^
The team blew it. Refs or no.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:26 PM ^
I know right how can our receivers not fight through a guy tackling his arms and make the catch. Probably a toughnes issue.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:47 PM ^
Yeah, Roundtree's a problem. That happened to him at least twice today.
/s
November 5th, 2011 at 10:15 PM ^
Roundtree is physical, ESPN showed a nice replay of him arm throwing his corner to the ground.... And then Denard over threw him with no defender within 10 yards of Roy...
Also, if the refs can look for an call "Illegal Snap" WTF can't they call "def holding" or "pass interference"
I don't accept "we can't let the refs beat us.
Sometimes games are close by design and it should never come down to the refs, even when teams are evenly matched.
November 6th, 2011 at 12:29 PM ^
/s = "end sarcasm" = Roundtree not a problem, there were at least 2 missed pass interference calls on him today where the defender had a hold of him and prevented him from stretching out his arms to make the catch.
November 5th, 2011 at 10:15 PM ^

2 of the 4 plays we didn't have a chance due to the refs. Denard's first throw was awful and the third play was doomed by the unblocked blitzer, but Junior caught that ball and Roundtree had no chance to make his catch due to the early contact.
Bottom line is the defense was rock solid for the most part and gave us a chance to come back, but sitting at the doorstep we were screwed by 2 calls (or lack thereof). Sure we could've done more early, but the offense was rolling and I would've liked our chances if we had been able to convert for 2 and force OT.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:26 PM ^
November 5th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
When you have to rely on the refs, you are in trouble. And yeah, we got screwed on calls but that shouldn't have mattered. We gave the frigging game away.
The turnover gremlins were back at it again as they always seem to be often with Denard under center. He didn't play a bad game but you can't make a couple of turnovers every week and expect to win close games.
Our O just didn't play well. This two QB thing is also a big piece of shit. It confuses people - yeah, us. Some of this play calling also sucks...you have one of the most exciting players in the country and don't take advantage of his skills. When Denard is gone, do what you want, but in the meantime, give him an opportunity to succeed, and it won't be through the middle.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:23 PM ^
WHY NO PASS INTERFERENCE EVER ON ANYTHING???
WHY IS AMAZING CATCH NOT A TOUCHDOWN??????
....
I am in the wrong thread because I am clearly not coping.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:24 PM ^
Borges has not made any good play calls in big situations for us this year. That is all
November 5th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
I guess it was Denard calling the plays against ND. BTW, he can't help it if out of the 4 opportunities to score we scored on one and were interfered with on another.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:31 PM ^
I didn't even hit the save button twice. Weird.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:32 PM ^
someone is dumb enough to want him as a HC because I don't want him as an OC. Four plays from the three with the most mobile QB in CFB and not one roll out. I hate the non calls on the PI, but play calling sucked.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
You win. I'm screaming "Go to wide side, run/pass option you stupide OC!"
"No, we must make Denard a pocket passer"
November 5th, 2011 at 3:52 PM ^
And if Denard had been tackled inbounds, causing the clock to run out, people would be bitching about Borges not recognizing the situation and having him get rid of the ball right away.
The playcalling there was not a problem. The second-down play got us a TD, but the officials blew the call. The third-down play should've gotten a TD, but Smith dropped the pass. Then on 4th down Roundtree was hit before the ball came.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
y u b rationalz in a rant thread?!?!!
November 5th, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
Aaaand, what would be irrational about getting DRob in space with instructions (just in case a D1 player didn't know their team had no timeouts and all) to throw the ball if you know A) nobody is open B) OMG, you're going to get tackled and we have no timeouts!
November 5th, 2011 at 5:43 PM ^
1) Sometimes you can get blindsided by a blitzer, as we saw against MSU.
2) He doesn't throw well on the move. I could see him drawing the defense to him and leaving a guy wide open in the endzone - only to airmail it.
Having him take the snap and immediately throw to the guy with single coverage is pretty simple. It got us a TD on second down, but officials saw otherwise.
November 5th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
If you're sure it's the right play it's worth it, of course, but I'm guessing it would have cost us one of the last four downs.
The plays called had the advantage of being very quick.
November 5th, 2011 at 5:59 PM ^
Roll your right handed QB to the right so there is no blind side blitzer. There is no excuse for not rolling out on 4th down period!
November 6th, 2011 at 12:39 PM ^
Denard doesn't throw well on the move.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
My thoughts exactly.
First thought: Roll him out.
Second thought: Hell no, don't do that, if he gets tackled not in the endzone we're out 1 more chance at the TD
November 5th, 2011 at 4:36 PM ^
I hated using the timeout before 1st down. I would have been happy spiking the ball on 1st down to preserve the threat of a run.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
I didn't think the playcalling was a problem. [edit: actually using the last time out on first down was a problem.] But would you ever be capable of admitting that this coaching staff made a mistake? Dude, you are constantly apologizing or making excuses for them. No one's perfect.
November 5th, 2011 at 5:03 PM ^
would be one on one w/ a LB or another on any speed option, pass option. Explicit in the play call would be "Hey, DRob, we have no timeouts so if you're under duress, throw the ball away". See, that's not so tough.
You assume the stretch to the outside would result instantly in a tackle and clock run out. We will differ, b/c I say the playcalling sucked down there and most of the game. The fades on the first two plays sucked b/c DRob apparently throws fades in practice to the outside but in games back to the inside, off his back foot and almost OOB.
I understand the ref blew the call on the last two plays, but the play calls themselves did not force Iowa to account for DRob. They just kept their lanes and said, "Beat us with your arm". He did not.
What was the most dangerous play of the four? When DRob got out of the pocket and Iowa commenced panicking. Ergo, DRob out of the pocket = danger for the other team.
DRob in pocket = Defense thank Borges for now making their job easier.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:59 PM ^
Eh. Iowa sent everyone not in man coverage on every single one of those plays, and that included edge pressure. That means someone is unblocked even if everyone does their assignment. A roll out could mean rolling into the outside blitz, and if a guy gets even a hand on Denard, game over. The way to beat that is quick throws and fades. One was a miscoummunication, one was a TD that was a blown call, then we had a dropped TD, then there was the PI (albeit not blatent) that was not called. Play-calling wasn't the issue.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:42 PM ^
This game and the MSU game are both on Borges. The playcalls have been absoultely atrocious. Stop the manball and 2 QB offense. It may work sometimes, so use it then. Don't use it every fucking play.
November 5th, 2011 at 5:56 PM ^
Hemingway was open on first and second down. On first down he broke to the corner (where the ball should have been thrown) without a guy within two yards off him. Denard missed the throws. On second down Denard made a poor pass again and Hemingway adjusted and made a great play. The only quesiton I have is on 4th down. I would have liked to see Denard on the move too. But at the same time, without PI Roundtree beats his man to the spot and that is a touchdown. So, the playcalling wasn't all that terrible.
I do agree I would have spiked the ball on first down though and kept a timeout.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:24 PM ^
Argh. Irritating when you play poorly and yet get a chance to win the game and have it taken out of your hands.
Not really complaining about refs because Iowa did outplay us and if not for some big defensive stops, we had no chance. But arrrrghhhh.....
November 5th, 2011 at 3:31 PM ^
But the D did make those stops. And twice we were inside the 5 and twice the refs allowed us to get mauled. I just don't care about who outplayed who we had the ball with a chance to tie and the refs fucked us out of it. I'm complaining.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:46 PM ^
Refs did miss calls, no argument there and they had an impact on the final score which blows.
Unfortunately, that happens sometimes and simple solution to avoid it is for the offence to not have anemia for the first 50 minutes of the game.
We put ourselves in a position where we had to scramble to come back and it hurt us. Yes, ultimately we get screwed on a few plays but if we manage anything resembling a functioning offence all game, then this thread might not exist.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:04 PM ^
I don't know that Iowa outplayed us. We gained 323 yards to their 302, 22 first downs to their 15 and went 7-12 on third downs to their 4-12. The two turnovers and the crappy officiating were killers.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:40 PM ^
We way out-statisticated them last year. Final score is the only thing that matters. I'm pretty sure that's what the haters said last year.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:13 PM ^
I feel the defense, for the most part, held together quite well. Still excited about the future, methinks.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:24 PM ^
No Fitz in the 2nd really hurt, he could have smashed through for the final TD.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:42 PM ^
No time outs left. Running the ball would have been insane
November 5th, 2011 at 3:42 PM ^
Shouldn't have watsed our last time out after first down catch. Would much rather have clocked the ball and then had the run option available.
But still, come on refs, do your jobs and at least try to call a fair game.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
You have to call TO there. 10 out of 10 coaches call TO there. You need all four shots at the end zone. Less shots=dumb math
