New Scoreboards: Not THAT Much Larger
Many of you may have already seen this as it was in a video sent out by the Alumni Association, but here is a visualization of how the new scoreboards will compare to the old:
I'm certainly not complaining, and I still can't wait to see these on Saturdays, but this definitely falls short of the size upgrade I think most of us had in mind. If you'll recall, this is the size difference Brian suggested we'd see:
Old:
New:
Edit - Christ, you guys can be frustrating. See the explicit note that I'm not upset nor disappointed about this -- I simply thought they were going to be larger.
I don't think the issue was with the actual scoreboard size, I think it had to do with the screen size. There was some other crap on the old scoreboards and only half of it was a screen. I think the new ones will be all screen.
Yup, I agree. And like I said, I'd never complain about upgrading to HD. I had just been visualizing a greater increase.
What is so difficult to understand? It is exactly like it was presented to everyone. The actual video screen is absolutely frickin huge. We just won't need all of the empty space around the screen for the scoreboard portion, as that will be below.
My head hurts.
Funny thing is Brian's example and the alumni pics are almost on the same scale. If they would've included the screen on the old scoreboard little Mike Hart would fit in there perfect
... you know, that being thinking about something so long that you convince yourself that it is bigger than it really is
That is a pretty big increase man. Wait until you're inside the big house to make your judgement.
That's what she said.
...the visual effect will be markedly better -- dramatically so.
The old scoreboard was definitely not so much wider than it was high in that depiction, and only the right side of it was the video screen whereas most of the new scoreboard is the video screen.
To those of us "elders" that grew up with the ancient, tiny one, these new bad-boys are going to be monstrous! BlueintheFace is right on - the actual screen size is going to be drastically different. I don't know about you guys, but I'm psyched. Lets go kill some birds!
I remember the tiny scoreboard very well...
At least on these small scoreboards, it was easier to read...the score...unlike the 1998-2010 scoreboards.
Apparently, we were the first ever college to have electronic scoreboards and these must have been it. Something I learned from NCAA Football 2003 for X-Box.
Good times. Ahhhh, the good old days. Thank the football gods for monster HD scoreboards!
I think I saw those scoreboards last year at the Notre Dame game; did they buy those from us?
scoreboards, consider me a wise elder as well! I will gladly go kill some birds with you, and let's call some young people whipper-snappers while we're at it, all while we wear suspenders designed to pull our pants up to our chests!
Edit: Whoops, WolverineHistorian has shown me to be in error. I thought the previous scoreboards were the ancient and tiny ones.
Critical factor:
Half of the old scoreboard was the game info (time, score, time outs, yardage)
All of that now is video board. While at any given moment, the game info will likely take up the left side, now ALL of the video board can be switched over to to make use of the HD video technology.
I really hope they keep the yardage counts, I loved the Bronx Cheer when Notre Dame finally cracked positive yardage in the 2007 game.
" but this definitely falls short of the size upgrade I think most of us had in mind."
Whaaaa?
The old scoreboard was maybe 1/2 screen, maybe. This is one giant screen... I've no idea what you were expecting. This is a tremendous improvement.
I was expecting what I explained I was expecting: the upgrade that Brian displayed. I obviously don't mean that I'm disappointed, simply that I thought the increase would be greater. Relax.
Brian's prediction looks right on because his prediction was based on old screen size (not the size of the entire scoreboard) to the new screen size (which is basically the entire scoreboard).
He was expecting the scoreboards to be up in the clouds
Ya, are you's saying that Pimp Hands complete domination on our beloved M football tradtion taking it into the 21st century is unacceptable. Is that what your saying?
As everyone said, the difference is that the screen is THAT much larger. The old scoreboard had a bunch of empty space and stats, the new one is a huge screen.

why the heck did you have to say it AGAIN? And twice no less??
The video used to be a very small portion. The whole thing can show video now.
Other than that difference they are pretty much the same. If I want a watch replays on a screen that size I will just use my IPhone. /s just in case
I would love if someone could superimpose the size of the old screen (just the screen, not the entire scoreboard) over the new screens for comparison. That would be a more accurate comparison.
Put your ear muffs on for a second people. Anyone who looks at that picture and can't tell the new score board isn't dramatically bigger is a fucking moran. I am not even certain our old one was a flat screen. I would rather slam my penis in a car door than go shopping for a TV with some of you.
Whoa, take it easy buddy, it's just a friendly discussion about screen size. I don't see why you'd get pissed unless you were insecure about your own screen size...
You managed to explain this without sounding condescending, not many could have pulled it off.
A bigger scoreboard would be cooler I guess. But on the North end, I think a bigger scoreboard would take away from the great views of Ann Arbor. Maybe on the South End a bigger scoreboard would have been more logical, but then THAT would take away from the symmetry. Just from completing this thought, I am seeing how any idea for the scoreboard would have pros and cons. That being said, I'm happy they are bigger and in HD and trust the people in charge make the decision with the most benefits. That is all.
Do a google image search for "old michigan scoreboard".
Case closed. The video wasn't even half of the old screen, more like a third or a quarter.
sad fact: I had to go to the fifth result to find a picture of the scoreboard in which we were winning.
Edit: beaten to the punch by chunkums, but I'm leaving it because Penn State.
In regards to your sad fact, go to umgoblue.com. Phil Callihan's got about 100 different shots of the scoreboard where we're winning from over the years...
No... The new screens are 47' x 85'. The entire assemblies are 108' x 62'. The new scoreboards are 40% larger than the old scoreboards. 108 x 62 * 60% = 64.8 x 37.2, so 65 x 38. Now, look at this photo:
You can plainly see that the scoreboards are 3x2 format, not modern widescreen, and less than half the total area. Say 3/8ths. So 3/8ths, or 37.5% of 65x38 = 25.5 x 14.25. Account for squareness and the old boards were 26x20 feet or so.
SO:
85x47 / 26x20. New boards are more than twice as long in one dimension and more than 3 in the other. This is over 6 times the viewing area. Not much bigger? Seriously?
not just ther part (all of it at some time, part at others) that is devoted to video replay. When you think about just the board size itself, while it is undoubtedly much larger than the old, I think the OP is right--I myself thought the total size of it would be larger and wider than this appears. After the upgrade and the new boxes at both ends of the stadium, the screens looked way too small, not just the video part, but the whole thing. This will be great and we'll all like it, but it doesn't appear to be as large as was discussed IMO.
He shouldn't be getting THIS hammered. Yes, the video will be way bigger, but the board size in filling and fitting in the open space between the two towers doesn't really make it look huge. But that's more room for more seats, I tell myself. But they could have gone a lot bigger.
Why does that scoreboard say "Shots on Goal?" Is this in preparation for the The Big Chill?
The Big chill was the last event at the big house before the old scoreboards were taken down.
At least that was a W...
Thank God for your picture, I now know that I will still see Tower Plaza from inside the stadium, the angle of the webcam made it look like the new scoreboard blocked it totally from view.
That's a picture of the old scoreboard during deconstruction. It probably does block it.
I actually have the opposite reaction when I look at that. To think that the screen of the new scoreboard is going to be bigger then the entire old score board, including everything that doesn't show video is an impressive improvement.
The post above my first, brought me to another thought. How will all the game information (Score, time, yard totals, etc.) that dominated the old scoreboard fit into the slim side panels of the new scoreboards? I understand the screen will be bigger, but it's nice having that information ALWAYS in display.
I would have to imagine they would switch back and forth between displaying game stats and video replays (or maybe switching between those two and a third option with both video and stats on the board), I think it's important to remember that THE ENTIRE screens will be available for whateva use is needed.
The box score will be a digital display on the video screen. The vast majority of the time it will be displayed but when they want to they will occasionally show a video/replay full-screen. I wonder if it will say "Press esc to exit full screen mode" when they switch over.
are where the big friggin speakers go.
That's right—at least for one of the scoreboards. Someone claimed on another thread that they wouldn't be putting speakers in both scoreboards.
Anyway, these renderings of a new scoreboard at Georgia's stadium give an idea of how the video screen might be used—in "stat" mode and "full replay" mode (minus the ads of course):
Whats with official mock-up of video boards using away game images? Our official mockup was an away game, and this one is actually of a game at georgia tech's stadium (they wear white at home sometimes, and notice the Russell brand poster in the background) You would think they'd use real home images.
To stop those who like to leave the Big House early there will be no in stadium game clock, only the coaches, quarterbacks, and zebras will get this information.
