Zero Penalties and Fewest Penalty Yards in the Nation Appreciation Thread
Somewhat lost in the discussion of yesterday's sound defeat of Nebraska was the fact that we had zero - yes 0 - penalties all game long. This season only four other teams have had a game with zero penalties: Arkansas, Iowa, Georgia Tech, and Army. With this great performance Michigan now leads the nation(!) in fewest penalty yards per game at 18.60. I'm not sure when Michigan last had a game with zero penalties, but this is a strong testament to the discipline and coaching of this team.

Awesome, that is a good stat to have.

I don’t take it as much of a sign if anything. My issues are more that refs don’t call enough penalties in general, and when they do, it’s because they’re out to pick bones with the players, not because they’re cheating. So they’ll ignore holding and illegal formations all game but don’t you dare wipe your mouth or spin the ball.
A little more professionalism in the profession would be nice.

You expect alot from B1G officials.

It's not a profession. It's an avocation. Not even NFL officials are professionals.

On the flipside, holy shit Indiana!
October 1st, 2023 at 6:45 PM ^
Indiana is in the middle. You have to scroll to page 3 to see that Colorado State has the most penalty yards per game at 98.0.

Huh. That’s weird - the sort function isn’t sorting correctly
October 1st, 2023 at 9:17 PM ^
It cost them that Colorado game, too. Late hits, holds, PI. Just nonstop. They were lucky to not be penalized more. It makes sense their coach has MSU ties.

this is tagline material

Is it easier not to have penalties when the other team isn't really challenging you anywhere? Regardless, Ryan Day would say it was because we aren't TOUGH.

found this on day's private FB page....

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to point out that -
vs. Rutger I freeze framed the delay of game on the FG. The centers hands start the snap with 1 second on the clock. The ball leaves his hands at 0. This is never ever called. Unless its a home game and you're Michigan.
This is particularly fucked if you're also a Lions fan. When the Ravens got a whole 2 extra seconds to run a play before they kicked their world record field goal to win the game. When it should've been backed up 5.
The 5 men in the backfield was about as ticky tack as it gets. Outside WR was 1/2 yard off the line and inside WR full yard. Another one that doesn't get called ever...... unless...
The PI call was - ok whatever.
So I've got ONE marginal PI call over the last 2 games.

When these things occur I often contemplate whether it’s due to ignorance or conspiracy. In today’s times many quickly jump to conspiracy theories, which may occur in rare cases, but I tend to attribute it to ignorance. It’s just really hard to accept that any ref could actually be that dumb, but I think they are.

Never assume nefarious intent when mere incompetence will do
October 1st, 2023 at 8:08 PM ^
Maybe stupid. Maybe incompetent. Those are perfectly good possibilities.
At the same time, mistakes can't be ignored.
Also, a mistake (or stupidity or incompetence) we see—and get to see over and over again—is only one of many things going on, and it's human to lose focus.
I remember the time I volunteered to be ump in a Little League game, when the regular ump was a no-show. First batter, roller to short, close play at first base—and I paused in parent-mode, ready to talk to other parents about how close the play was, and what did they think about the call—when it hit I hadn't yet made the call. Then I called out, sure as I did it that the kid had actually been safe.
So though I yell at the TV like most of us, I have a smidge more sympathy for them than I had before.

Yeah. It speaka to the discipline.
I hope they don't try to even out during PSU and OSU games.

As a numbers guy, I'll try to ignore the law of averages. Just keep playing with poise and confidence.

You speaka da English real good!

The team might not even it out but can’t be sure of the 7 guys and gals in the game without helmets…

Also the #1 rushing TD and #1 receiving TD leaders (each tied with others)
October 1st, 2023 at 6:03 PM ^
we also lead the nation in completion percentage (JJ), rushing TDs (Corum), and receiving TDs (Wilson)

I think they said on Inside Michigan Football that the last time Michigan played a game with zero penalties was back in 1980.
October 1st, 2023 at 7:48 PM ^
I think they said it was the last road game where it happened? Not positive though.
October 1st, 2023 at 8:01 PM ^
I don't think there is any Michigan team more disciplined than the 1980 team was by the end of the season. The team got off to a slow start.
October 1st, 2023 at 8:09 PM ^
O'Neill must have started in '81.
October 1st, 2023 at 6:18 PM ^
See! This is why it's good not to let the ones who have only done Intro to Lit at Stanford in!!! High standards!!! :)
October 1st, 2023 at 6:20 PM ^
Back in the BPONE days of Don Brown I wouldn't even celebrate a third down stop for a few seconds, waiting to see if there was a flag. I'm slowing coming around to celebrating third down stops in real time. The Harbaugh healing is real.
October 1st, 2023 at 6:48 PM ^
The sign of a legit good team.
October 1st, 2023 at 6:55 PM ^
Discipline with Focus!! Most excellent!!
October 1st, 2023 at 7:36 PM ^
I see some people saying that this stat doesn't mean anything. I highly disagree. This stat speaks to how disciplined and well coached Michigan is.
October 1st, 2023 at 7:46 PM ^
Kind of ironic because that there were a few seasons in the 2014-2019 where Ohio State were near the top of this stat, and the conversation here were more “ref favoritism and bribing” and less so “strong discipline and coaching.”
October 1st, 2023 at 8:47 PM ^
True Ohio State went 4 years without a OL holding penalty in conference play. I believe it covered the years from 2014 thru 2017.
Just a fact ... look it up. This is also factually impossible to do.
Go Blue!
October 1st, 2023 at 7:59 PM ^
Does Harbaugh not being at Games 1 through 3 have anything to do with this? No "Intent to Deceive" penalties needed.
October 1st, 2023 at 8:35 PM ^
I think it is more impressive that a very good portion of the second half was played further down the depth chart but still no penalties.
October 1st, 2023 at 8:45 PM ^
We did look good and well disciplined, but this is more likely the refs wanting to get the hell off a 100+ degree field during a blowout. As it was they happily ignored our DE's getting held all day.
October 1st, 2023 at 9:38 PM ^
Always a sign of good coaching and smart disciplined players.
October 1st, 2023 at 10:21 PM ^
As we all know penalties can add up and can cost you points or the game e.g. hello The Game 2006 and Crable’s late hit penalty (too soon?) Hope this is a trend that continues.
October 2nd, 2023 at 12:30 PM ^
This is something that I noticed anecdotally a couple of years ago as the shift in the program went from being good to great.
We are no longer the team killing ourselves with mental mistakes & dumb, little penalties anymore. When it comes to The Game we are no longer the undisciplined wannabe getting 15 yd penalties trying to look tough, now it's Ohio doing those things the past couple of seasons.
I have no clue what Harbaugh did to change things but I love not having to worry about a ton of plays wiped out by penalties or the team being way behind the sticks because of a dumb 15 yd unsportsmanlike any longer
