Who Has the 2nd Best Football Helmet?
Mates,
Oldest son just got his brand new football helmet ahead of summer workouts and it is a dandy - a winged helmet, albeit with the wrong colors. Of course we all know the greatest helmet in the universe:
But the question became what is the second best helmet? For the college teams, some of the (2nd) favorites were the Navy's alternate helmet, Notre Dame's new gold-chrome one, USC's, and some of the older Northwestern helmets (emotional pick).
For the pros, the Lions are winners, but others included the Patriots, the Chargers (blue ones), the Bears, and Green Bay.
So the question is: Which helmet(s) is your 2nd favorite, college or pro, old or new, alternate or standard?

Princeton. The color scheme could be improved though.
Iowa actually asked the Steelers if they could copy (I think in '79) and were given permission.
In case you thought it looked kinda familiar, that's why.
- (Obviously)
- Florida State
- Oklahoma
- Texas
- USC
Clarkston Schools
Oakland Raiders...Pirates > YOU
took the inspiration of the silver from the lions uniforms. and as much as i detest most raider fans (read: parolees), the team does have good uni's.
Interesting fact!
They also had this beast....

Woo hoo Clarkston!
Ohio States helmet has pot leaves on it so it gets my vote. I am kidding they aren't #2. Though it was genius for them to copy Bo and the stickers. Second WAZZU, Clemson, Raiders.
Hebert to Carter....
I'm with ya there. Other than UM, the Michigan Panthers were my favorite helmet and uniform of all time.

I can see the logic if his theme was minimalist ... so Alabama and Penn State would kinda-sorta fit that. But then FSU and USC are not so minimalist. So I don't know.
I like Nebraska and Oklahoma ... they're traditional and they don't mess with it.
USC is nice; not a fan of UCLA. I do not like ASU at all.
And I hate, hate, hate, HATE Notre Dame in every way possible, so eff 'em.
FSU, ND, and UCLA. Honorable mention to Tennessee.
Yes, Delaware has some amazing helmets as does Princeton... and THIS Arena League Connecticut Coyotes '96-era tri-color awesomeness makes me wish UM played a July 4th game...

but the 2nd best helmet in all of football has to go to our rivals/not-rivals in in South Bend. 2nd best stadium, 2nd most wins, 2nd best fight song. Perennial runners-up, the Irish.
of the same thing. I loved the old LA Rams helmets they would be number two for me. Miami Dolphins # 3 I guess. This has nothing to do with my out and out hatred of OSU but I have got to say in my opinion that their helmet should be dead last right behind MSU.
2- Chicago Bears
3- Alabama
4- Oregon (when they wear the green helmet with the yellow O- all others =yuck )
5- Ohio State - hate to admit it but their helmets are pretty good
what's so special about this:
other than it slightly resembles USD, harbaugh's college team he coached right before stanford.

There is a pretty large pool to choose from, but some of the standouts when it comes to iconic helmets - after ours, of course -
- Texas
- USC
- Florida State
- Penn State
MGoBrewMom mentioned the matte black ASU helmet too, which I actually thought was pretty slick. If we're talking cool helmets rather than iconic per se, that's on there.
Fuck Penn State
There's something distinct about the way ND does their thing and it comes through their helmets too... As close as Navy's are to theirs, there's just some intangible that makes them unique. Makes them better. Watch them all bounce around in a hype scrum after coming through the tunnel... there's something there that GaTech, Alcorn, etc just don't have.
As far as PSU's go... I get why someone would have them on their top 5. (TSIO too) Classic, traditional, our logo is NO logo because we don't need no stinkin logo and if I slap numbers on the side, we'll all just look like redneck asshats from the 40s. I get it.
But I wore THAT helmet in those colors from 7th grade through HS and when we went on the road, we got our chops perpetually busted for wearing "practice unis." And then we'd get destroyed 31-6. Winning is the only thing that makes that scheme work. ND still looks badass even when trailing by 4 scores, PSU looks like an underfunded DII prog unless they're eating your lunch.
San Diego Chargers Powder Blue.

but I always thought Mater Dei (CA) had cool hemets and unis
