Since when can you call a timeout during a play?? (USC v Utah)

Submitted by MaizenBlue93 on October 16th, 2022 at 12:03 AM

Not sure if anyone else just saw the end of the Utah - USC game, but USC threw an interception with 12 seconds left that was called back because of pass interference. The clock should've had about four seconds left, but the refs said to put the game clock to 12 seconds because a time out was signalled during the play.

Since when can you call a timeout during a play in football? Why aren't more teams doing this?

You can’t. I think they claimed it was an inadvertent whistle. I was shocked when they added time when they should have reduced the time left.

I was thinking the clock should be set back to the time of the interference call, because the guy who intercepted it ran about 6 seconds off the clock after the foul was committed. It seems logical to me. I mean, what if the interceptor just ran around for 13 seconds? Would the game just be over even though a flag was thrown?

Happens all the time in the middle of the game.  What about when a QB heaves one 40 yards downfield after an offsides.  It’s known as a “free play”.  They don’t stop the clock on the offsides.  End of game would be no different except the game can’t end on a defensive penalty so it would be an untimed play.

My understanding is that one of the refs inadvertently blew the play dead when the pass interference occurred, which is a massive mistake considering the situation.  As if that wasn't enough, they decided to add another second to the clock after the next play (from 7 to 8 seconds).

I thought that they blew the whistle because they thought it was an incomplete pass and missed the interception happening. But then the refs came out with the "time-out called during the play" explanation.

I'm sure the NCAA will explain it clearly sometime this week(sarcasm).

It looked like Whittingham was going to go beserk. I think he said "you can't do that!" but they could, and did.

SMH. The ref announced the in play timeout with such confidence. Hopefully something else happened and he misspoke. If not that is egregious and he should not ref a high caliber game again.

Not to mention the blatant late hit out of bounds at the end of the interception.

Utes played terrifically, and their fans were awesome.  Great win for them!

It was bizarre. Then just before the last play, with seven seconds left, they inexplicably added a second, which might have been just enough to allow USC to throw a pass into field goal range and call time out. But the qb had to scramble on the next play and the pass was incomplete with no time left.

Missed the USC late hit out of bounds too.

Though it would've been sweet if the DB had had the presence of mind to just run around until the clock ran out. (Yeah, they would've gotten an untimed down, but still...)

That was one of the worst called games I've seen in a awhile. Even the announcers were debating the calls with each other. At one point, I thought the Utah fans were going to rush the field. Horrible.

I didn't know you could do a summersault into the endzone with no penalty after a lucky ass pick 6 either.

Esp. since you can't make a 'wiping my mouth' move after a sack without a 15 yard penalty.

But whatever man. PSU looked real cool and real mouthy while getting they asses 'barrassed like no B10 team since Rutgers.

That was one of the worst officiated games I’ve watched. SC had two roughing penalties called that affected the game greatly. One on a pick in the end zone and Utah scored next play after, and another one late that would have created 4th and very long. Brock Huard was coming unglued at both of them.

That was another example in a long line of them of asinine Pac 10 refereeing shenanigans.  The play obviously ended with 8 seconds on the clock, and there was no evidence of an early whistle shown in the broadcast.  Just the refs straight up handing USC an extra play.

Lucky for Utah, Williams is decidedly not equipped to Tom Brady his team down the field under extreme pressure.  It was 40 yard chunk or nothing for him like 6 plays in a row.
