Updates from Women's Football Academy

Submitted by mvp on

A couple items from my wife who is at the Women's Football Academy today:

  1. Will Hagerup is practicing/working out and is in the building today.
  2. Jake Ryan is "looking good" and still on schedule to return mid-October.

Nothing really revealatory, but I figured it was worth posting first-hand confirmation of two positive facts.

With the gf. She fell in love with Jake Ryan and Taylor lewan. Dymonte looked like he was having a blast and Houmas hair is nothing short of bad ass! I've seen roughly six or seven pic sixes so far.

That's the other thing - no one has the heart to tell Mary that, at 5'1, she should really pursue a different position. The prototypical DE in the women's game towers over her at 5'8 - 5'10. Don't get me wrong, Mary has her fair share of Tacopants moments but it's not a consistent winning strategy...she'd be a solid slot though.

Hey, for as much as Kiffin is terrible at the rest of life... he won in that department.

Sidenote: how did he become the coach at USC???  I swear I blinked and this 26 year old kid is coaching USC AFTER decimating Tennessee.  It's like he wrecked the BMW but gets a loaner Ferrari.

Supposedly Russell Bellomy is moving around pretty well too. I know we haven't talked about him much, but if he's on a similar timeline to Jake, he may be a viable option this year as backup QB

I was curious about Hagerup. Last week, I asked Laura Hoke about him, and she said he wasn't able to practice with the team, or take part in team activities, for the next year. Apparently, he can still use the facilities, however, which makes the most difference to a kicker.

So here are some of my quick notes/thoughts:

Hagerup was there and meeting with the ladies, but he wasn't teaching.  Also, his gear was not the same as the gear of the active team members.

Jake Ryan is on schedule to return in 6 months. He is doing workouts daily and 3.5 hours of PT every day. He got advice/emotional support from Countess and Wormley who went through injuries last year.

Taylor Lewan said he wants to return because he wants a Big Ten championship.  He also said he sometimes is amped too much for games so he listens to John Mayer to bring himself down. Dr. Hamlet III was "too aggressive" and they thought he might have been abused by a previous owner, so it wasn't working out at their place.  They sent him to an actual farm.  He assured me that they did not eat him.

Dennis Norfleet is a music major, he sings.  I asked what he is thinking of onfield when he is drumming and he likes R+B, nothing specific.  He doesn't like pump up songs.

Taco Charlton is very tall. He was a patient teacher at the tackling dummies.

Devin Gardner had to work very hard to resume role of QB. Mattison was praising him effusively about the self sacrifice he made in becoming WR.  Devin said, "It's a good thing I had good grades before that happened, because I had to miss a lot of class to learn all the running formations." Also, he and Borges have a good back and forth going.

I asked Borges about his relationship with Heiko.  He said he likes Heiko because he likes to argue with him.  Also, I asked if he knew that Heiko is a Med Student and he said, "Yeah, a damn stubborn one!" Also, my friend's son goes to school with his daughter so they talked about school, Kindergarten play, etc...

Taylor Lewan benches 420. In pounds per pound comparison, Jeremy Gallon is the strongest (wt lifted/athlete wt).

The trainers recommend 1 g protein/pound of body wt.

One lady commented at the Q&A session that us meeting the players is like a 5 year old girl meeting Justin Bieber.

Brendan Gibbons is growing a handlebar mustache.

Frank Clark is a good dancer and he drank 1/2 gal of OJ for breakfast.

That's all I can remember now.

I will brag that I was able to make all my catches in the "dong forest".

With complete sincerity, I must say I enjoyed reading that more than any post here in the last month or two easily.  What a fascinating look at the team from a perspective different from the usual X's and O's perspective.

Very nicely done ... very nicely done.

I know you boys wouldn't believe it, but some of these women are animals. I got tossed around like a rag doll in years past. I am sorry I didn't make it this year. My brother went to the Men's Football Experience on Thursday and Friday but I still haven't gotten the full debriefing. If there's anything worth passing on, I will do so.

I wanted to add a few more things that were funny/interesting.

Dennis Norfleet has "D" and "N" tatooed on his calves.  D is on the left and N is on the right, each has flames coming up off them.

Borges was asked about life as a football coach during the Q&A.  He said for the first 43 years of his life he lived and breathed football and then he met his wife and this changed his perspective greatly.  8 years ago they had their first child and his perspective changed again. Now his joke is that when his kids are teenagers and they ask for the car if he tells them "No" they will turn off the ventilator.

Desmond Morgan has been moved from WILL to MIKE (and they actually told us what tose things mean). I spoke with him briefly to thank him and his teammates for taking time to do this with us and how it makes us enjoy the game much more than we did before. Last year I had lunch with Desmond, Joe Bolden and Ondre Pipkins and it really made me want those guys to do better/succeed because now I know how nice these boys are.

We spent a lot of time on technique and form in each position and we learned some Xs and Os.  They actually had some plays developed for us to use in scrimmage. I played corner and now I appreciate that running backward, fast, is very hard.

Jeremy Jackson was very friendly and a good receivers coach. He is premed.  At the receivers station, everybody catches a touchdown and has to dance.  Their rule is if you don't dance, we will all dance around you until you do dance!

Brendan Gibbons has graduated and is studying social work.

Jeremy Gallon is hilarious.  When we were "breaking it down" I asked if we could get a back flip and he did one for us.

It was a lot of fun and I am sore as all get out today.  I can't wait for next year!  Maybe I can get an mgoblog press pass and do even more in depth reporting!

since I broke a rib last year and really held back during the scrimmage.  The ladies are vicious.  Certain ones are trying to show off, and they will tackle you and get mad at you.   Also, the cougars were all over Jake Ryan.  Granted, he's a babe, but it was too much.  One lady asked to "touch his ass".  He laughed it off.  I was mortified for him.  I talked to Logan Tuley-Tillman.  He says he loves Ann Arbor and doesn't miss home at all.  Good kid.  and big.  Roy Manning is beyond excited to be back and was super nice.  The coaches were trying to get him a date, saying he was "most eligible bachelor" and has never been married.  Wish I knew someone his age and single...

I was really grossed out by how many women who are old enough to be their moms (or grandmothers) were going on and on about how they would love to get it on with these guys.  I am definitely old enough to be mom to them, and all I could think of is "OMG, I am old enough to be their mom!"
