Summer Workouts

Submitted by umbig11 on
As many of you know, only S&C coaches can observe summer workouts, but S&C coach Kevin Tolbert is raving about four Frosh that could see the field early in 2017. Luiji Vilain, O’Mary Samuels, Nico Collins, and Jordan Anthony have been singled out. In addition, those that showed up in the spring that drew high praise are Ben Mason, Ruiz, DPJ, Black, and St. Juste. Notables left off the list were Solomon and Thomas. Both need to make some personal gains to compete early. Other than Ruiz, all the other lineman need to get bigger, stronger, and quicker. It’s hard to crack the two deep as a lineman in your first year. The coaches need to see them with the pads on in order to evaluate them further. You can probably add Robbins to the list of Fr. That will play right away. This Freshman class is very deep! Other notes: The fastest RB times still belong to Karan Higdon. The 4 WR sets are real. A lot of preparation taking place in the 7-on-7's. The addition of Scott Turner and Pep Hamilton have created some buzz regarding new route trees and schemes.

Also his clip of him bringing the ball up on a fast break in hoops was off the charts for a kid his size. It reminded me of Warren Sapp dunking a basketball at 6'1" 310 lbs. Dwumfour is an athlete in a big boys body. If he is also a football player...which I am guessing he is, watch out QBs.

are always ahead this time of year. Not many high school kid are ready to compete in Tolbert's workouts. Give Solomon another month doing gasers and tell me he can't compete for rotation time. I would be shocked. September is still nearly 2 months away ... plenty of time to turn boys into men. Damn, I love football and the process of summer workouts to that first tilt.

Anybody that has seen video or pics of O’Mary Samuels knows why the S&C coach loves that dude!

He looked like a 5th year Senior when he walked in the door!!!

This last thing mentioned is actually one of the things I am most interested in - I was pretty excited about the Pep Hamilton hire just because of what it seems it might do to the overall use of WRs in this offense.

Ben Mason is in the FB rotation from game 1. He can bench 450, wipe out any LB in the B1G as a frosh and has the athletic skills to contribute in the passing / running game as needed. Dude has the chops of a junior. Just wait.

Maybe this isn't the perfect thread for this question, but does anyone know if Evans is going to be taking snaps at Slot this year? I don't remember reading any concrete evidence of this in any reports this off season (I easily could have missed something though), and he played sparingly in the Spring Game. Brian alluded to it in HTTV, but he really only cited Evans playing Slot back in high school

Between Perry, Nate Johnson, McDoom and Oliver Martin, not to mention a guy like Schoenle (not a slot guy but possession type WR) I don't think we'd need to use Evans in the slot much. But if he is comfortable catching balls out of the slot, maybe we'll get creative. I wonder what O'Maury Samuels hands are like.

Faux Mo, who was rumored to be departing?  UMBig11, didn't you say there was another player a few weeks ago who was off the team that had not yet been announced?

Saw the thread title and thought 'I would love this to be from umbig11' but was sure it would be about yoga or pull-ups. I am very not disappointed. Thanks umbig!

redshirt. He needs more bulk to compete in the B1G. We won't make the same mistake RR did with McGuffie and put Oliver in harms way before he has matured. That guy is gold for 2019-2021. Grant Perry is back and will dominate in 2017-18. Grant will be hungry, humbled by the off-field experience and dedicated to Michigan football. His route running skills are outstanding and Wilton will find him as a go-to.

...Samuels' can effectively find the creases and make the cuts, he may be difficult to redshirt. It will be fun to see what the final RB rotation looks like. We have a stable of very talented RBs.

I'm also anxious to see how Kurt Taylor develops. He's flying under the radar now, but I have a hunch he's going to be good.

Of course, lest we forget K. Walker... Higdon... etc...

the thing is the RB rotation will change over the course of the season.  maybe you meant what the rotation looks like heading into those final few games or simply the order in which they break camp and enter florida prep.

its no secret this staff likes certain backs for certain plays and / or situations and theyve been clear about desire to spead out workload / hits so we should see a healthy rotation.  if we see a "final rotation" at all though itd likely be down the stretch.  but youre right, itll be fun to watch.

if the OL (and O in general) can crack open creases, they have enough RB talent to punish most Ds

This is why I don't know why people are excited to see his name on this list... He was already a workout warrior...his film and measureables are INSANE.

For me, the skill position players don't even need to be mentioned. This is about lineman and big bodies. Which of THOSE freshman have come in physically ready to play.

We're not going to learn much from skill position guys. We already knew this kid was an OMG SHIRTLESS and everything else. We knew Thomas was effing tiny. For those guys is more about being good at football. For lineman, you can be talented, but yes...you're going to need the measureables as well.

Can we get 1-2 freshman OL who are ready to push for time like Bredeson and Cole did? Sounds like Ruiz is 1...can we get an OT? On the DL, great news on Luiji...not so much on Aubrey. I'd love to know if Kwity Paye can get some snaps as a rush end.

We already knew Ben Mason was going to be a freak in summer workouts...but guys like Hudson and DIB? Can Paea get some snaps this year?

I'm far more interested in the big guys. Everyone else is just going to have to prove it on the field. You can be a 5'9 170 RB or a 6'4 240 RB and be successful. I don't know many 6'5 215 or 5'9 400lb lineman that are great...at some point you need some ideal height, weight, speed, strength to play those positions. Those are the guys who really have to build themselves up even if they want a shot at earning a shot.

badass pic...it may be one of the more generic edits (at least from what ive seen posted here - theyve produced some crazy detailed material) but still dope.

that department does a damn fine job with the edits and marketing, etc (assuming thats the origin).  im sure recruits dig it
