SC players comment on our offense

Submitted by BeatOSU52 on

When asked if there was a moment where the Gamecocks’ defense felt they had solved the Wolverines, cornerback JaMarcus King gave an affirmative answer. He felt that way after Michigan’s first two drives.

“They gave us everything,” King said. “After that, we knew we could stop everything.”

Why? King felt the Wolverines were playing to their tendencies — running a lot of the same routes over and over again.

“The choice route where the receiver runs a mesh and the tight end runs a dig,” King said. “So they ran that probably 85 percent of the time, and they ran a lot of stop routes on the back side.

Similar answers were provided by linebacker TJ Brunson and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, as well.

Brunson knew from certain formations whether Michigan was going to run the ball and where the Wolverines would run it. He could also tell what to expect from personnel groupings. That allowed the defense to simply read their keys and “make plays, execute.”

“We got in the right calls in the right positions,” Brunson said, “and everyone executed for the most part.”

Well if this is true and it seems it is, really hope that an offensive coordinator is brought in to freshen some things up. This just isn't right. I hate watching the games on tv because they never give the entire view of the field. Even after the play is over would be something and make it more interesting. Anyway, there are so many route combinations but a part of me feels it's personel that cant execute whats asked so things are kept vanilla. Hopefully a guy like Shea Patterson can come in and run free when he needs so this stuff is covered up. The secret is out on this offense though. Need a brilliant offensive mind to come in and save the day. Jim just worry about being the head coach. Just get it done! Go Blue!

These quotes happen after every game.  It's always from the winning defense, a unit that also let Michigan build a 19-3 lead and got a bit lucky with 2 redzone TOs.

Michigan didn't play well offensively.  I'm not sure how much of that can be attributed to SC doing anything different.

Michigan had one drive all game long. They built their lead off of SC practically trying to give the game away with mistakes and turnovers. Yet Michigan could only get field goals out of amazing field position. Sure seems like SC was able to hold Michigan regardless of the great field position Michigan was gifted.

USC had something like 14 TOs and had given up 13 points off them; they've done that to everyone this year, apparently.  And they didn't have "amazing" field position.  They had one at the 46 and another at the 31.  They scored 6 points off that.  Michigan had 5 TOs and SC only scored 10 off those, and that included multiple balls inside the 20.

Both teams were bad offensively; Sc just got a bit more success out of the field position Michigan gave them.

So we had a redshirt freshman who did not get the majority of the snaps throwing to two freshman receivers, one who was hurt the entire season until this bowl game.  This is what happens when you have young players.  We are all upset because the QB did not know the entire playbook.   So here are your choices with Speight transfering.  You have O'Korn who knows the offense but can't make the plays and Peters who does not know the offense and maybe makes the play half the time.   Unless a young QB is completely surrounded by a another ten that dominate for them, they are going to look bad unless you get really lucky.

McSorely, Fromm, Eason, Lewerke, etc, etc, were all prepared to play when their number was first called and they had just as little (or less) experience than Peters. Good staffs get their players ready regardless of the circumstances! If their players can't grasp the system, they cater the system around the players! That's why Michigan is THE ONLY team among their like-minded peers who is complaining about youth! Michigan State just rode their Sophomore QB and True Freshman receivers to a 10-win season and a bowl win against a top-25 WSU squad!

We lost to South Carolina. They're a terrible football team. And people think we're going to be better next year... Funny joke.

Don't need a player to tell us that UM is predictable. Harbaugh is stubborn and his offense scheme is very high school. The scheme is very 1970's and 1980's Bo style bu tthat is not really the issue folks. The  play calling though is atrocious and there is no rhyme of reason for when the plays are called. On 1st down its a run for 8 yards then its a short TE crosser either dropped or thrown on the dirt. 3rd down its the Pep Hamilton fly pattern overthrown or not thrown far enough. Jim Harbaugh's biggest problem is the hiring of FRIENDS and FAMILY as coaches. I though tit was really weird for Wheatley to leave when his kid was still on the team. He could have gone to the NFL at any time to coach but he left his boy in Ann Arbor. Something is not right about that. Top coaches approach theri programs with all business. Look at what Saban did prior to the NC last year with Kiffin. Ran his ass out and it probaby cost him but he was in control of HIS program. Michigan brought in Harbaugh into AA and has treated him like a GOD giving him a free hand and 7 million dollars. His first season was his best coaching job. The team that Michigan had last year should have NEVER lost to Iowa or Ohio State (The hell with the call-shouldn't have been in that place to begin with) and not FSU either. They should have been in the playoffs eben though Bama or Clemson would have beat them.

Coaching across the board has been very poor and recruiting, especially at OL, has been way below expectations. I don't see how you can retain that same collection of coaches on offense. This past season may have been one of the worst offensive teams I have witnessed in 50 years of watching UM football. Defense is elite and offense is pathetic which is a weird combination for Michigan. Coach Harbaugh needs to evaluate the go-forward strategy.

But I have no points so oh well. I think harbaugh needs to clean house on the offensive coaching side. He needs to back a truck of cash to Lane Kiffin’s driveway and bring him in to handle the offense. I know people give him a lot of crap, and he is a TERRIBLE head coach. But the dude runs a great offense and I think that’s what we need.

A comment I kept hearing over and over during the RichRod years was "fuck this fancy shit, I want an offense where everyone in the building knows we're gonna run it, and they can't stop it." Reality is that everyone knowing what you're gonna do isn't so nice.

Has any one ever heard a defensive player say, "No, they had us baffled all game.  We couldn't figure out what they were doing"?  Especially after winning.

I suspect the offense was plain vanilla but comments made by the opposing team don't carry a lot of weight with me.

No Kulgler, no Bredeson, No JBB

I think the last 14 months would feel better if Grant Newsome wasn't taken out by an unsportsmanlike block in PSU game 2016.

Short running backs and QBs.

The irregular mix of injured receivers and QBs doesn't make running the offense easier.

MSU played a team that relied on defense but lost their defensive coordinator, their QB, and their two best receivers before the game.  The refs gave them the Indiana game, a monsoon, 7 turnovers, a thunderstorm helped them along the way.

OSU won a national championship over a team that lost 7 of 8 of it receivers in the last three games of the season.

Hell, we lost the last game to South Carolina because we lost three DBs in the course of the game.

In 2006, the Wolverine national championship run came to an end when 3 DBs were lost in the last two games of the regular season.

Injuries are a bitch and they end more dreams than the best laid plans of mice and men.

Regardless,it is great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

The biggest part of this I agree with is the lack of continuity in WRs. Game to game it was different guys in there and never the same ones. We know Black was injured and Collins and Perry? were dinged but it was such a revolving door there. I can’t imagine anyone being able to get into a rhythm with such inconsistent playing time.

That game, like many others this season, was just hard to watch.

I still have faith in JH though.  Football AIN'T EASY!  I have always thought it wouldn't be until his 4rth or 5th year before Michigan started playing real football again.

I still like Michigan football, but I don't think I will not go surfing in the future so i can watch a game.  Guess I will just be a DVR fan.

Anywho, Go Blue!
