Per Sam: Battle for Dax Hill may not be over

Submitted by ThatGuyCeci on December 11th, 2018 at 1:38 PM

Per Sam Webb last night on TMI and again today on the recruiting roundup, the race for Dax Hill MAY not be over. Sam cautions fans to stop with the accusations of extra benefits, one because it’s indecent, and two because of self-interest (so you’re saying there’s a chance?). So while we are all collectively upset about what went down, all hope is not lost. Sam also mentioned Aubrey Solomon as a precedent. It’s not necessarily the exact same situation, but there are definitely parallels. Take it FWIW.

His flip did come after Cris Carter's comments, which Harbaugh and Warde went to extra lengths to deny. It is crazy how much the rest of the country believe Harbaugh to the NFL rumors. I was talking last night to a guy here in upstate New York who had been living in San Francisco and the first thing he asked me was so Harbaugh is going to the NFL?  I think we as a fan base know the rumors have no basis but the rest of the country seems to believe it.

And it must be hard as hell to say no to Nick Saban in your living room.

It has been mentioned that Dax Hill is very close to some Michigan commits and those guys are still coming and if the NFL rumors are extinguished, it may not be over.

To us, it is baseless, but apparently the rest of the country believes an Harbaugh-NFL rumor. I just didn't realize how pervasive it is. I'm just thinking Dax may have heard it enough to create doubt coupled with Saban giving the full press when it looked like Michigan was losing Harbaugh. Maybe his buddies can instill a bit more confidence in Michigan.

It really is incredible. Even after Harbaugh and Warde explicitly renounced the NFL and all but made a blood pact to continue coaching at Michigan, I get a CBS Sports alert where Danny Kannel and some other shlub are basically saying "I've heard this so many times right before a coach leaves a program..."

It's a no-win situation. Very frustrating.

I am with you on this. I understand its importance to the program as a whole, but most of recruiting coverage are like tabloids or paparazzi. I think Sam Webb does a great job covering the program, but I don't expect him to know the inner workings of every prospective teenager and family Michigan is recruiting. Anyone expecting that is going to be disappointed.

And honest talk: one individual recruit is not going to make or break the program almost all of the time. And the exceptions are usually a QB. I remember when Michigan landed Rashan Gary, but does anyone believe the trajectory or results of the last 3 years are any different with or without him?

So Sam Webb contacts Dax Hills dad and asks what’s up with the flip?  Mr. Hill being polite says that it’s not over until it’s over ... this feels like a girl breaking up with a dude for another dude and the first dude asking her friends what’s going on and they just don’t want to crush the guy or deal with it so the explanation is left all ambiguous and open ended....I’ve seen this movie the girls already banging the other guy and it’s over

What?  No way it's same as Solomon.... Hill doesn't live in Alabama does he? Why on Earth would he have to hide a Michigan committment?  I don't buy this..at all.... I'll gladly eat a lemon if wrong. (I like lemons)

So did Sam specifically say it might not be over, or are you inferring that from "because of self-interest"?  Because...... There are lots of other ways that can be taken besides there's still a chance.  If he thought there was still a chance he'd come right out and say it.  Sounds like that's not what happened.

MAY not be over is incorrect grammar.

MIGHT not be over. MAY is used for permission purposes only, As in you MAY continue to believe Dax Hill MIGHT still come to Michigan if you also believe in fairies and magic dust and unicorns and that Michigan will one day beat Ohio State.

Funny because I listened and that's not the impression I got. I got the impression he was saying kids change their minds for lots if reasons, and that Dax and his family are good people, so don't assume the bag man got to them. He mentioned that Dax mentioned to his parent's distance started to become a factor. This recruitment is over, and he said as much this morning. Mentioned that we have other kids on the team that coaches would look to fill this spot.

You apparently didn't listen as much as I did, because he went into way more detail than that. And he didn't throw out Aubrey Solomon's name and discuss him extensively for no reason, which Sam even said as much.

If you listen to Sam Webb enough, you know to pay attention to his tone of voice as well. And he also very clearly stated in the 1st 6AM segment that he wouldn't be bringing this up if it wasn't for good reason and only to offer a glimmer of false hope. He was a bit too energetic and "happy-go-lucky" for this to be a generic "isn't over yet" statement.

Yeah, some of this is a bit overboard and over-analysis, but I am telling you with 100% confidence as someone who listens to The Michigan Insider on a daily basis that your assumptions are in fact incorrect. Dax may not sign with Michigan, but there is definitely real legit hope that it still might happen. You don't have to believe that, and that's fine, but your statements are most definitely false. They are, however, safer than allowing yourself a glimmer of hope if your main goal is to not feel defeated all over again. And there is nothing wrong with that.

To end this, Sam also said somewhere in today's podcasts that he would go back after this is all over and done with and explain to his listeners why he brought this up again. So there is a story.

Which is basically as extreme of an example as it was for Solomon to be committed to Michigan right after saying "F Michigan." Neither of those stories were easy to grasp at all as they were such extreme outliers. Isaiah Wilson was heavily rumored to have met the Bagman, to which no one could deny, and stunned everyone including the coaching staff.

And the dumb thing is that Sam Webb was one of the only people who had the Aubrey Solomon story down and very few would believe him. Which was fine, but if you're going to say he screwed up the Isaiah Wilson case, which everyone did including our own coaching staff, then you need to give him credit for being the one guy saying Aubrey Solomon is likely coming to Michigan.

Sam has more direct knowledge of the Michigan recruiting side of things than any "Insider" out there. Sometimes kids make decisions without even telling the coaching staffs of the teams they are choosing from. Heck, sometimes even the parents don't know. Everyone gets stumped from time to time.

Losing Dax was  a gut punch, but we'll see how it works out.

People I think get too wrapped up in recruiting (myself included) prior to signing day. Verbals in the end don't mean a thing. No kid is truly 'committed' until they sign.

And... while I would really love him back.... I can't fault a kid for wanting to play football at 'Bama or school at Stanford. I wish him well.

God I almost wish I wasn’t able to follow until the results were in. Imagine how much easier it would be to hear “Dax Hill, first round pick out of Alabama, actually originally was commited to play at Michigan” and just think “huh, didn’t know that. Oh well” instead of it being salt in the wounds.

Glad to hear it.  I thought the same thing as soon as it happened.  He liked us enough to commit before.  They've already put in the time and effort. Why not keep after it until signing day?

No time for being a butt-hurt cry baby in recruiting.  I agree with Sam.  I really hope the idiots shut up and don't bother the kid on social media.

Let the coaches do the recruiting ffs.

It's over.

We're like the dog that keeps falling for the fake-throw-and-hide-the-ball-trick.

Yes it's mean, but we're so fucking stupid it makes it kinda fun.

Thanks for the false hope, but if it isnt absolutely clear to you that Michigan doesnt get to have nice things anymore then I don't know what to tell you.  Sure we get close and we have more than some, but no one dances with high expectations only to be crushed in the very end like Michigan. "But basketball!" No sorry. I didn't have a good time watching MI lose in the Nat'l championship twice. It was fun getting there, but we always get crushed when we flirt with those high expectations.
