Record after 8 games

Submitted by Flying Dutchman on

I would like to take a few seconds to name 4 (of many overall) teams that have worse records after 8 games than that of the Michigan Wolverines.

1.  Ohio State

2.  Michigan State

3.  Notre Dame

4.  Wisconsin

That is all.  Sleep well.

I actually disagree with the sentiment that Sparty "kicked our ass for 60 minutes."

There were two very key plays in the game that basically swung the game in MSU's favor and neither of them had anything to do with MSU making a good play:

First, Devin not throwing the ball to a wide open Stephen Hopkins (that was a terrible play by MSU's defense but UM didn't make them pay for it becaus of Devin's incompetence) which cost UM 7 points and a half time lead.

Second, the botched call by the official when he blew the play dead on the backwards pass/muff that should have resulted in a turnover deep in MSU territory. MSU scored a TD on that drive (which should not have continued) and UM missed the opportunity for points as they would have had that ball, at worst, at the MSU 30-yard line. That was at least a 7 point swing and potentially a 14 point swing.

If those two plays go UM's way, UM probably has a 17-7 or 21-7 lead in the 3rd quarter. Totally different ballgame.

drunk, when I posted this and all my OSU buddies were calling, texting and telling me that "by the time we play you Braxton will be the best QB in the B1G." After sleeping on it I realized that Wisconsin isn't as good as I thought they were two weeks ago and we should be better by that last game as well. I am anxious to see if the light has finally clicked on for Touissant and if it has Borges needs to ride the Touissant express. No more overthinking AL, please!

Wilson looked like a deer in the headlights tonight, they couldn't stop the running attack of a team that the KNEW was going to run, and they couldn't stop a back-foot 50-yard pass across a guy's body.  They also started their season with 6 straight home games, five against absolute garbage.  They then lost their first two road games.  There is not yet evidence that they are a good team.  The conclusion to be drawn from today is that Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State, Nebraska, and Michigan are all at about the same level.  I think in any matchup between those teams, the home team is most likely to win, and, so far, has.

Take solace in the fact that Wisconsin apparently can't win on the road (see: @MSU) and OSU is only good at home. Michigan gets OSU at home this year. Feel better? If not go drink a whiskey and realize that playing and beating a crappy OSU isn't really that fulfilling.

I'd rather they come into Ann Arbor playing well and leave with their asses handed to them.

we played and lost to a crappy team since MSU only seems to be good at home unless they are playing against a team with a bunch of suspended players.  Ohio will get better as the year goes on unless Miller goes down.  They should also have Posey back for The Game.  Their D is good and in close games last year at SDSU Borges threw way more than ran ie MSU despite playing in a wind storm.  If he predetermines we can't run the ball again like he did against MSU then I suspect we lose again.

Unfortunately there is no reason to believe we can run against the bucknuts.  We don't have the speed to outflank them nor the power to run over them.  Their front seven should be able to control our run.  I believe we need to run multiple receiver sets and look to throw a ton of short passes and screens.

That may loosen up their defense and allow some semblance of a running game.  It would have been nice to try that strategy against sparty too.

Well I don't think Mattison's defense would let that OSU receiver get that far behind the DBs on the last touchdown. No big plays.  And yes I am ignoring the rest of the game and the fact that I would kill to have an Oline and running game like Wisconsin has.

Even if we split the remaining games (worst case scenario IMO) we wind up 9-3. I'm not disappointed and maybe borderline happy with that. Probably puts us in the Capital One Bowl.

A team we haven't played yet, a team we lost to, a team we beat on a last second TD, and a team we will only play if both teams win out and get some help.

Why can't people just enjoy 7-1? Why. Why, Why?

These guys are chicken littles. The schedule is not that tough, Iowa just lost to the worst team in a major conference and Illinois squeaked out a wins over WMU, NW and have now lost 3 straight including a loss to Purdue. Nebraska is tough but is at home, OSU is severely limited offensively and its at home also. I like Mattison to gameplan OSU and pretty much shut them down.

Bottomline is this conference sucks and talking about how tough UM schedule is laughable as none of these teams are balanced and tougher ones are at home.

Yes they are, but everyone in the Big plays better at home and we have always had a tough time at Kinnick.  How many games has Iowa lost at home? Zero.  Illinois has lost one to Ohio.  We're 1-1 on the road and Northwestern was almost like a home game as we had nearly as many fans in the stands.  Is any conference really that good?

Being a U of M fan, I am not familiar with the whole division scenarios. How do you make it to the title game? By that I mean, what matters to have you ranked at the top of your division? Does overall record come in to play? Or only Big10 record? I have noticed that Michigan is listed at the top of legends division on espn b/c they are 7-1...Does this matter, say Michigan and MSU win out...Would we go to the title game, or would msu?...

MSU beat a depleted OSU and OSU's defense looked dominant today vs Wiscy for most of the game.  OSU also got their run game going....  That doesn't bode well.

We have the home field, and they have a freshman QB, but we'll be on the tail end of a bruising 4 game stretch.  I expect a game where we get manhandled and don't crack the 18 point mark, kind of like the MSU game, with Hoke talking after the game about being more physical.

Gorgeous was a huge disappointment with the packages he prepared vs State, let's see if he can surprise and come up with a plan, otherwise this game will end up like 20-10 OSU.

End of day, I prepared myself this year to be happy with 8-4 and I'll stick with that.  Split Iowa/Illinois, and then expect losses to Neb and Ohio.  Anything else will be a great surprise and I'll be jumping for joy.

Quite a few posters on here have forgotten what it's like to have a team improve and play better as the season progresses.  It is happening right now. These last 4 games are all very winnable the way the team is coming together. In the meantime, I love the optimistic viewpoint of Flying Dutchman.
