OT: What Phone Do You Have / Want?

Submitted by Darker Blue on July 4th, 2023 at 11:30 AM

So I think the wife and I are going to finally upgrade our phones. Currently I have a Motorola G Stylus 5G and she has a Note 9. As you can see state of the art isn't necessary.

I'm looking at a Pixel 7 pro. She wants an S23. I actually really would like to get the Samsung fold 4 but I'm clumsy as fuck and would break it.

What phones are you guys rocking? What phone would you get if you were upgrading ?

We just upgraded to the S23.  I got the top of the line one.  My wife got the mid tier one.  They both do what they advertise.

I actually do have the phone mentioned and do want the one with a dial for my landline that I almost never use but like the aesthetics and story. My kids voices are on the answering machine attached to the other landlines and they were 6 and 7 when they made the message.

I and the telemarketers and con artists that call on this line only enjoy their little voices and as a bonus it embarrasses my kids which is awesome. They are 27 and 28 now.

Yes, I have an iPhone that is a tool and not an appendage.

I've used strictly Pixels the past 6-7 years and couldn't be happier. You get all the Google extras before they are released to other phones and the camera is top notch. I have a 6 Pro but will wait until the 8 comes out later this year before upgrading.

I have been on the Pixel train since the Pixel XL. I got that and Google Fi at the same time - 2016/2017ish. I still find Google Fi to be the best price and service over any provider I've ever had and all of our Pixel phones worked great through their lifecycles. Upgrading mine and my wife's phone this fall, and giving my daughter one of our Pixel 6s when we upgrade. And honestly, there is a part of me that doesn't even want to upgrade. With the adaptive charging push a while ago, my phone battery can last two days on heavy use - which is mind blowing to me. Still get "first in line" updates/upgrades. And the only issue, which is a knock Google has had on their android phones for eternity now is sometimes Bluetooth is just a PITA to connect. To this day, sometimes it just won't connect in my car when I start up. I have to shutdown the bluetooth service and restart it. Same with other BT devices. That is the only knock I have ever been able to have on any Pixel phones, especially with the insane battery usage I get now with proper usage of adaptive charging.

I can't stand apple products so iPhone is out for me. Samsung interfaces and bloatware make me shy away. #Pixel4Life

Google Fi is the most underrated service out there. I'm surprised it never got more traction. The only issue I had was that actual phone service wasn't great and I have a job that requires a lot of phone calls so I moved to something else. The Pixel phones are class also.

I will echo everything you've said outside of using Google Fi as a carrier (Verizon).  I will also add that the 'a' line of phones is extremely solid and additionally, Google can be quite competitive with their trade in program.  For reference, as I am tech support for my family, I upgraded everyone's Pixel 3a/4as to the then new 6a @ $129 apiece.  Same story when I upgraded myself to the Pixel 7 Pro as they juiced the offers for Pixel 4XLs and I couldn't be any more happier with the camera and its zoom capabilities.

I go Pixels as well, as I used to be a Nexus guy.  Pixel 2XL, 4XL, 6Pro and 7Pro.   The 7Pro is great, and pretty cheap at this point.  If OP wants to really go budget, scoop one up after the 8Pro comes out around October.  Or just wait for that.

I've been going with the Pixels.  Very happy with them.  The software side of things makes for a very smooth, trouble-free experience and I like the camera software a lot.

My son just had to get a new phone and opted not to get a new Samsung as he normally does.  He instead got a refurbished Samsung S20 Ultra for under $300.  He felt like it was the best phone they made and better than a newer one.  He seems pretty happy with it.

The powerful people use these though...

My first mobile phone was that model with the skinnier battery and the short stubby antenna.  Did not fit in my skinny and fashionable hard side leather briefcase.  Must have been 1991 or 1992 when I got it.  I was working at Bell Labs in the Wireless Telecom business which was a very quiet backwater infrastructure business for AT&T.  We were on the cusp of nationwide roaming and 3G which threw the whole business into overdrive.

Family has kind of standardized on the Galaxy S series of phones, either the S or the larger S Plus versions. Nice thing about standardizing is that we can share common tips and tricks when using our phones (read this as "Dad, how did you .... " level of information sharing).

Edit/add: I have also liked phones from OnePlus. They make a great piece of hardware with a simple UI and minimal bloatware. They also seem to be reluctant to add wireless charging in order to hold down costs. Do your homework.

I also suggest that you look into launching software such as Nova Launcher. Gives you a very nice ability to customize the phone's UI.

I have a Galaxy s22 that I upgraded from an s8+ and it does everything I need it to. Wife has a Z-Fold and is a clumsy person - she buys hard cases for it and has never had any problems. The screen has held up as well.

Highly recommend getting a new phone once every few years instead of yearly - getting to see leaps instead of skips of tech improvements makes it more fun.

Yeah I like the instant gratification of going from a POS that's barely support anymore and doesn't hold a charge to something top of the line.

It's not as noticable if you're constantly upgrading and phones never hold value so buying every year is extremely wasteful.

My last one was running out of memory and I was at the point where I was deleting apps to make space on it.

I was glad when I dropped it...  and the screen cracked. Yes, I'm cheap.

But it was really nice to suddenly have twice the memory, nicer photos, ridiculous battery length, fast charging, and quick connections.

Being cheap, I got a OnePlus Nord N10 for @ $150.

I'll probably go for a Pixel next. Once I break the Nord.

This makes me think of one time I was dining at the restaurant in the basement of East Quad (what was that damn name lol, loved the fried chicken sandwhich and fries option) and this guy walked up and proudly ordered freedom fries. The girl behind the counter said, nope, just have French fries." And when he refused to capitulate, she didn't serve him fries lol. This was like around 2002, well before this highly politicized environment.

Of course, French is just the cut anyway lol.

Haven't thought about that in 20 years. Nothing more to add other than Happy 4th!

I've got an iPhone Xs Max.  I work in a Windows environment but all my personal stuff is Apple and I like the way Apple products integrate with other Apple products.

I've never owned a phone this long but I've been waiting for USB-C in an iPhone and that will happen this September.
