Drugs and sexual harassment? They were just working on their butterflies and breaststroke.

Seriously though, hazing is wrong.

Since it's a small sport at a small school, do they just drop the hammer on them?

Though I don't know the details... My guess is that a similar situation in football would lead to a forfeited season, one year postseason ban, and a head coach forced into retirement.

You're not supposed to tell us who you once were. The fun with repeat trolls is to guess who they were at one time and then watch the new account build to inevitable flameout. Of course, the typing in all caps and gratuitous use of the word "fuck" might have been a dead giveaway in this particular instance. Still, you should have left this up to the board - slight breach of etiquette on your part.

Some of the details can be found in this WKU report - LINK

Regarding the sexual assault aspect of the case, a description of some of the photos found in a raid of the home where the hazing supposedly happened:

Some of the photographs depicted intoxicated individuals that were nude or partially nude placing their buttocks on other individuals, according to the BGPD report. The photographs also showed individuals with a penis drawn on them, the words “insert dick here” with an arrow drawn to the mouth..."

There's more than that even - pretty sick indeed.

If there were female victims, I hope they are all charged with felony sexual assault and potentially rape.  There is no knowing what these women prevviously wnt through and with 1/2 of college women being sexual assault victims, this is no way to treat them.  I hope they are all expelled and reported to the police.

the appeal of fucking with someone while they're passed out.  If I woke up with a dick drawn on my face, the guy with sharpie stains on his fingers would be getting his ass kicked.

I was a Michigan hockey fan even then (Brad Tippett is still possibly my favorite Michigan hockey player ever), and I remember there were calls from the Detroit media to cancel the season.  I have always wanted to ask this, and obviously some things need to be kept quiet so I understand if you don't care to talk about it, but...it's about how Canham handled that.

I assume Canham forced Wilf Martin out as coach after this came out in the press (although it was always stated that he retired for health reasons).  How close was Canham to cancelling the season?  Did he care about finding out what happened, or did he only care about how it was playing in the media?

It always seemed to me that Canham hated hockey...note that Dan Farrell left Michigan because they were paying him essentially nothing, and the person they got to replace him was a rink manager in Denver who happened to have played for Michigan years before.  I know at the time college hockey wasn't the big deal that it became 15-20 years later, but it still seemed like Canham almost wanted to make it disappear.  I half think that was the reasoning behind leaving the WCHA to join the CCHA.

i never heard that the season was almost cancelled.  i do remember having gin and tonics with him a couple days before the rose bowl (out in cal, of course), i'd guess that'd be '82/83 and he sure didn't seem to have any animosity towards the hockey team.  wilf, well, lets just say that wilf had some issues that were tangentally related to hockey.

tipper was a good guy and a good hockey player.  just thinking of a time when he and i, along with spearsy and donnie k went to the ccha playoffs at the joe - unfortunately we were spectators that year.   a memorable evening.  the shame of all of that was that we had so much talent on that team, myself excepted, that it was a tragedy we didn't do a whole lot more.

You know, the people in the stands were convinced that Canham couldn't care less about hockey, or possibly hated it.  Always interesting to see how different the perceptions are between the fans and the players--I guess we saw that again with our most recent AD.  I do know that there were a couple of voices in the Detroit media who called for the season to be cancelled.  Glad to hear Canham wasn't paying any attention to them.

As far as Wilf was concerned, it always seemed that he was kind of put in a situation a little over his head.  I think the desire to get a "Michigan Man" as coach might have over-ridden common sense; he had never coached at anything approaching that level before.  I recall hearing that his only coaching experience was some club team in Colorado.

Drawing dicks on passed out friends was standard operating procedure at our parties in college. It was all in fun. The girls got into it as much as the dudes

Did you forget the /s???

I'm not that old and I'm reading the link and thinking, seriously, they wiped the program out for this?  That kinda shit was standard fare back in the day -- as long as nobody got hurt.

First hiring Petrino, now this. But it isn't suprising--the swim team has always been known as some of the wildest athletes (students) on campus; my buddy's wife, a former WKU soccer player, shared stories of their parties. And every night I biked past their houses, I could see some party happening. Interesting thing is that WKU had been promoting former Hilltopper swimmer  Clair Donahue for her Olympic gold medal in London. Just shaking my head--no one knows anything about WKU, except for the stupid things the school does and that douchebag Big Red (I have had bad encounters with "it").

There will never be another varsity swimming and diving team at WKU. Five years? No way the University brings it back. Note that the current coaches weren't just fired; their positions were eliminated. Div 1 schools have dropped swimming and diving programs for less than this. I'm guessing the "suspension" is about current scholarship athletes keeping the schollies long enough to graduate.

I'm not down with sexual harassment at all...

But if someone is emotionally scarred for life by getting a sharpie or an ass cheek on their face while they are passed out, then they got too many participation trophies as a kid and their helicopter parents failed.

Read this: http://wkuherald.com/news/article_fc76353c-de4c-11e4-b878-5bb6c0cc6f7c…

To downplay this into a non-issue spawned by our "participation culture" is a bit ridiculous. These young men and women acted like assholes; these aren't the first swimmers to complain about this happening at WKU. Is it okay to subject someone to this sort of humiliation and possible danger (drinking until you vomit) just to promote group cohesion? It's a shame that it took this long for my school's admin to do something about this, but this stupidity shouldn't be allowed to happen/continue.

Lighten the fuck up.  Nowhere in my post am I advocating sexual harassment.  We don't know all the facts yet.  But if this is just some possible binge drinking and taking a Sharpie or ass cheek to someone's head, well that was pretty standard fare when I was in college.  It got worse than that when I was in the CCT pipeline when I was in the Air Force.

As long as nobody gets hurt (that's where I draw the line with practical jokes and hazing) then this is only a problem to those who run around looking for problems.
