OT - Vacation Spots November
I am looking for a good vacation spot to go during the week of Thanksgiving with my gf. We both work a lot, and want to go somewhere warm that has nice beaches where we can lay around and relax. Last year we went to a resort in Riviera Maya and it was great. Any recommendations? I am looking for somewhere not on the other side of the world, since we only have about 4-5 days.
Prince Edward Island is beautiful in November. And it's got lots of beaches (obviously)
Har har har
I'm glad we have the same sense of humor ?
Leave me kinfolk alone, arsewipe
Honestly, if you gave me a choice between the Caribbean and a nice backpacking/hiking trip in rural Canada, I'd take the maple syrup every day.
If you don't care about doing things other than laying around on a beach, then Roatan.
All I think of is Rotel when you say that and I only ever heard of that from the young days of BTN. Now I think of Delany. Thanks.
Never heard of this, but it looks beautiful. Thanks.
Concur with Roatan. Absolutely beautiful and the perfect place to just lay around on the beach.
Finding somewhere to bury your head in the sand when UM plays OSU, huh?
We're all thinking happy thoughts of getting to the beach in warm weather while home is freezing and you drop that bomb?
Oh the pain!
Vegas. Lots of alcohol, drugs and gambling.
That’s not a bad idea. You can go to Egypt, France, and Italy in the same day. Take care of the world part in one stop.
How about a cruise?
Cruising is actually one of the most economical vacations you can take. I've been on Carnival cruises where I've paid $70 per night, per person, and that includes:
- Your cabin (i.e. "hotel")
- Unlimited food
- Travel to various ports
- Included cruise ammenities (pool, hot tubs, etc)
- Included onboard entertainment
You're not going to find that for $70 on any other vacation. Even if you pay $100 per night, per person, it's still a great deal.
There are plenty of 4-5 day cruises available that leave out of various U.S. ports. (Including Galveston since it appears you're from Texas.)
Hurricane season cruises up the adventure level for sure.
And for some wacky reason, the cruises are more expensive in the summer. I love going in the winter when the prices are cheap. It means the kids miss a week of school, but they don't complain. The wife, an educator, hates it.
Honestly, the best part of a cruise is the complete lack of connectivity. No Cell phones, no internet-- it's pure bliss. That, childcare, and a few gallons of Long Island Iced Tea make even a cruise on an old Carnival Ship with 90% spring breakers an enjoyable experience.
Unless, of course, you are one of those people that do cruises WRONG, paying out the wazoo for crappy ship internet and international calling.
Agree. I just got back from my first cruise and I never want to have internet on vacation again.
Turks and caicos. Stay in providenciales at a hotel called Sibonne. It’s on the beach and you can get anywhere you need to go on foot or by bike.
Curious when the last time you have been there? Went there 3 years ago and was amazing -- couldn't go in 2018, but the group that went said it was still badly destroyed from Hurricane Irma and Maria. Was planning on going there this year, but went to Eleuthera, Bahamas instead -- which was super low key and chill and recommend as well.
T&C x's 1,000,000. except, we stay in Provo at Aman Yara. it's secluded in the NW corner. nothing like it on earth. we've been spending 3-4 weeks there, every year, for the last 7 years
$2k/night? Does it include continental breakfast?
I know it’s expensive but I honestly had no idea it was that much per night. We’ve been going two times a year for a while now and my wife always books it thru AMEX concierge. I have a shit ton of points and am able to offset some of the pain.
Definitely agree with Turks and Caicos. I would stay at the beaches resort gear beach and resteraunts. You can lay around and do nothing or keep busy
Costa Rica. Rent a car and explore everything from the coast to the volcanoes.
I second that.
I've been to Costa Rica maybe like 6 times, and unless you fly into Liberia and take a bus straight to Tamarindo, it's not really that relaxing of an experience. If you fly into to San Jose, it's not relaxing at all.
Although I've been a bunch of times, I've kinda decided that Costa Rica is an overrated place. Not particularly cheap, not easy. It's the "extremely exotic" destination for gringos who are used to getting ripped off at Disney World or other Florida locations every year.
I used Thanksgiving to take an extended vacation without using many days. 4-5 days isn't enough in my opinion especially when you have to fly.
4-5 days is fine if you don't lose an entire day to travel because of time changes and connections. If you can swing a morning, direct flight to a location and a later flight home on the last day 4-5 days is plenty for a beach recharge.
I own a small hotel in Costa Rica and always tell family and friends visiting from the US to go down in November. The rainy season is ending and the weather is cooler. There are also less tourists at the beaches and on the excursions/activities. Lots of fresh tropical fruit too.
UMCal where is your hotel? The wife and I are thinking of heading down in the near future with her parents.
The property is located a few minutes north of the Tarcoles/Crocodile River Bridge (20-25 minutes from Jaco). There are seven 1 and 2 bedroom homes (1450-2250 sq ft) on the 20 acre converted mango plantation, so you could share a home or have your own.
I was just there a couple of weeks ago. Are those homes up on a hill to the right of the highway driving northbound on 34 from the crocodile bridge?
If anyone goes, that's a good spot to bed down. You can easily get to Los Suenos for sportfishing or Jaco. Also not too far from Quepos (more sportfishing) and Manuel Antonio National Park.
Share a home? It’s is one of those swinger resorts?
There are 7 homes on the property and he is traveling with his in-laws. He might want to have his own 1 bedroom home and stick his in-laws in another.
Thanks for all the info UMCal!
I second this-- send a link, man. (Assuming you aren't just planning on robbing me of my cash/organs/life)

If you like to fish I can set something up with the locals who go out at night and come back with ridiculous amounts of seafood. They only ask you pay for gas ($10) and bring your own life jacket.
Don't accept any local moonshine though :)
This is awesome. Do you live there year round? My wife keeps trying to convince me to do something similar in a few years, but I’m terrified of taking on such an endeavor. Other than building a website, I would have no idea where to start.
Lived there for 11 years while we went through the entire process of getting permits, building, and opening the business. Living in Costa Rica I had to accept almost everything takes a lot longer. People move at a different pace, but that is what also makes it nice.
My first few years I had to make friends with the local internet cafe owner because that was the only way I could watch the UM games.
I would highly recommend Turks and Caicos - easy flight, nice places to stay without being crazy expensive. Lovely weather, assuming no hurricanes:)
Margaritaville in Hollywood Florida was good to my wife and I last year the week of Thanksgiving. Best vacation we've had with perfect weather
Beaver Island.
Not in November!
I’ve been there many, many times as my wife’s family is from there. No, don’t go in November. Or for that matter, Dec - Oct either.
Before kids, 6 years ago now, we would go to Costa Rica in November for a few years in a row. Still some risk of being rainy, but the beaches, surfing (especially for novices), and wildlife are incredible. It’s still very affordable and without the risk of some other cheaper Central American options. My wife just came back from a week there at a surf and yoga camp. She said it’s still amazing.
Dominican Republic or Costa Rica
Costa Rica is great, but the DR is where people are dying to go.

They're dying to go to Costa Rica too
The Costa Rica one was mostly homeless people drinking tainted moonshine. I don’t think it is similar to the mysterious deaths of tourists in DR, which I’ve also been to and would not recommend even before the deaths.
