OT: Teams we Love to Hate

Submitted by M Ascending on

Okay.  yesterday we had a thread regarding teams besides Michigan that we root for.  Well, today let's put on our nasty boy pants and talk about what really matters -- the teams we love to hate.

I'm curious to know the 10 college football teams (in order) that you most despise (with the reason, if you care to give it).  I suspect that 90% of us will have the same top four teams in some order.  It's the next six that might prove the most interesting.

I'll save my response for a little later, but will just get things started with my obvious number 1:

tOSU -- Because ... Buck the Fuckeyes ... and also, Woody, Spielman, Galloway, Cris Carter, Clarett, Boston, Tressel, Urban, redneck Buckeye scum fans (including the one who broke my car window in 2004), and the list just goes on and on.  My t-shirt says it all.

[EDIT:  Okay, now that there are over 50 responses, here are my top 10:

1. OSU

2. MSU

3. PSU

4. ND

These are the four I expected to be at the top of almost everyone's list.  ND used to be No.2, but have dropped since we stopped playing them every year.  I actually used to like PSU, but since the Jerry/JoePa scandal and the way their fan base has reacted irrationally in support of Paterno, they have moved near the top of my list.

5. Tennessee --  Ever since Fullmer voted us No. 4 in 1997 to help give Nebraska half a NC, as revenge for Woodson beating Manning for the Heisman.

6.  Baylor -- Never used to care about them either way, but the recent scandals can't be ignored.  And how the hell could you hire Ken Starr as your president?

7.  Nebraska -- See No. 5.  That cheesy asshole Tom Osborne announced his retirement just to gain the sympathy vote from the coaches to give them half the NC.  They should never have even been in that position, but for that ridiculous kick-ball TD they scored to beat Missouri.

8.  Alabama -- Hated them when they had that racist Bear Bryant coaching.  Hate them now that they have that douche bag Saban.

9.  Ole Miss -- Hugh Freeze. Laquon Treadwell.  Confederate flags. Need I say more.

10. FSU --  Bowden was basically a slime bucket.  And why should they get free shoes when I don't?

10a. Pete Finebum -- If he were a college he would make my list.]

dude is a stud, seems like a very high character guy which i know you appreciate, not to mention he went through hades, losing his wife to cancer and with i think 4 young children at the time.  i love that guy.  he might be the only redeeming thing about that school.

as for teams i love to dislike, i'd put the deathstar (bama) and really most of the SEC teams since you just know they are snakes excepting probably vandy.

ohio state, because honestly can Michigan just beat them sometime

Alabama, because of the way they made me feel 5 years ago

USC, because I was primed growing up in Northern California that they were enemy number 1

Notre Dame because even though the alumni were some of the nicest people when we visited in college, the students were all prime grade dickwads.

Oregon because since 2003 we havent had a good game against them.

Toledo for ripping off the bandaid of 2009 and forcing me to face reality.

1-AA teams who beat us and whose name i cant spell correctly because their fans STILL APOLOGIZE when they talk about that game. I dont need your pity.

I'm really stretching wrt the word "Hate" on the last 6... I don't think I have three more.

1). msu. Their fans are the most delusional fans there are. At least osu is good for more than 5 minutes every year, so though their fans may be absolute trash and the school a bunch of cheaters, I can accept that they actually have something to talk about. Also, living in Michigan, you deal with spartys more often than buckeyes. Which leads me to...

2). osu. For reasons (some of which are stated above).

3). Penn State. They have recently jumped ND for obvious reasons as well

4). ND.

5). This is where it gets tough. This one is like a rotating tap....but right now maybe Baylor?

6) I have to do this again? SEC team du jour.....uhhh Georgia?

7) Florida?

8) Arizona because it's fun to root against Rich Rod

9) Alabama

10). Tennessee?? (Douche coach...and that awful fight song.

That was hard. I have a solid top 4 but beyond that, I just don't know. I bet it may even change within a season.

MSU fans over the weekend:

Lewerke is >>>>> than Speight. Not saying Speight is great or anything, but a fan base that cried about Gary getting preseason accolades (which I also won't defend) is propping up a guy who had 1 start and beat a terrible MAC school.

Florida's defense is ok, but it's not like it was 3-4 years ago. Florida is only >BGSU so it's not like Michigan really beat that better of competition.

MSU is young and already "good" so imagine what will happen next year.

No, seriously, those are discussion topics. Their Spetember Heisman delusion is already starting and their youth can grow, other team's youth is too young to compete.

For sure is up there for me.  I understand that most, if not all of the people responsible for what happened are gone, but that doesn't excuse the continuing fans to STILL claim JoePa knew nothing and did nothing wrong.  I don't want to hear shit from any analyst about how much PSU has overcome because they did it all to themselves.

Aside from PSU:
Any team coached by Urban Meyer, past or present, (Utah, Florida, OSU)
Ole Miss/Arkansas: Despise Bielema and Ole Miss is just plain fun to hate because they are so inept and whenever they get a sniff of success the NCAA and essentially every not Ole Miss fan knows they probably pulled some shady shit and eventually get busted for it.
Bama: Obvious reasons

Rutgers: They think they are relevant, they aren't.

I know not all of these are really big threats to Michigan, but I enjoy rooting against some pretty terrible teams.

Maryland is god-awful.  Never had an encounter with a Maryland fan that was even a little bit enjoyable.  You'd expect that from a UVA fan, but this was true even when dressed in Purdue gear.  Purdue!

Virginia Tech, for obvious reasons and for their school colors.  Alabama, just 'cause.  Rutgers, for being B1G pretenders.  I actually root for Sparty and Ohio over Maryland and Rutgers because real Big Ten teams should win Big Ten competitions.  Latent dislike for FSU, Miami, USC.  And finally, schools like South Florida, FAU, and the like.  Why?  Because they're like the China of college football: they bought their way into relevance on the strength of a large population.

I wasn't going to chime in because my hates are not many and mostly the usual suspects around here, but it never really dawned on me but it is very true. I really get annoyed with all those directional Florida schools. I couldn't tell you why, maybe because they all did seem to pop up out of nowhere. So thank you, I certainly feel better now that I know I'm not alone....

Penn State wins the gold medal.  Until their apologist fanbase  apologist trustees STFU, I want nothing but the worst for their program.  Oh, and children were raped with the knowledge of Joe Paterno.  Who did very little to right the situation, and allowed it to persist.  Children, FFS.

Baylor gets the silver medal.  Institutional cover-ups of sexual assault + a holier-than-thou general demeanor?  Lives ruined and the victims treated like they're the problem?  Here's your medal.

MSU gets the bronze.  While the institutional cover-up was on the gymnastics side of the equation, football in particular fostered a culture of entitlement pretty much as soon as Dantonio got on campus.

OSU - fuck em

MSU/Penn State (very close nowadays) - fuck em

UCLA/USC - Mora and UCLA take our recruits/players for no damn reason or for no results on the field and Rosen is an absolute douchebag. Fuck em. USC ruined many Rose Bowls for us. Los Angeles is a trash football city and neither of their home stadiums make any damn sense. Fuck the LA schools.

I don't despise Alabama and Oklahoma, but they do bore me. I root for UT in the Red River Rivalry. I root for Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Notre Dame is whatever, I've lost some hate since we haven't played.

Fuck all of Louisville's trash fans at their pizza school.

I guess UGA is in the same camp as Bama and Oklahoma too.

Those can be my 10.

... especially on the 'bama, OU "boring" thing.

Add Texas in there, too - but with the stench of 500 head of beef and an unjustified superior attitude.

Hard to watch any of these 3 even when rooting against them.

I'd say I don't "hate" ND when they're not playing us - but they do supply some of the best Schadenfreude when they almost win - then lose.  That's when you need to be standing next to an ND fan in like a NYC bar so it can be oh so fresh.

OSU - yeah; 15000 students and 85000 truckers in stadium (Thanks Ufer)  My apollogies to real truckers.

MSU - SO delusional!  SO whiney.  Smack them down and shut them up.

UCLA/USC - I appreciate these teams more than LA.

I want to be a USC fan, but when they're good, their hype machine's insufferable.
But those cheerleader sweaters. SHWING.  Very shitty campus.

UCLA never amounts to anything - waste of a great campus, etc. So fuck 'em.

1. OSU - mostly because I live in Columbus and have to endure the insane cult of buckeye

2. MSU

3. Notre Dame

4. Bama

5. USC

BONUS: Basically any SEC school because of the overhyped SEC love that is so prevalent. In general, any warm weather school. Must be tough recruiting to a school with a beach. Come play in the snow like a real man.

1. Ohio State

2. Notre Dame

3. Alabama

4. Penn State

5. Baylor

Oddly enough, Michigan State doesn't make the list. I'll root against them more often than not, but I'll root for them against a pretty wide variety of teams.

Are you a cutter as well? You're either not from Michigan or you don't know a single msu fan. Those insufferable bastards have ruined any chance of me not wishing metaphorical death on all of them and their shitbag, garbage program.

I grew up in Michigan, live there now, and know plenty of MSU fans. Sometimes I'd just rather have a team from Michigan winning, if I don't particularly care about their opponent.

For what it's worth, I think this is an era-based thing. I started following U of M sports in the late 80s and early 90s, and back then, MSU was hardly on even footing. Occasionally they'd spring an upset in football or basketball, but it really was a "little brother"-type of relationship. You wanted to beat them because they'd be annoying if they happened to beat you, but since they weren't a real threat overall, it was nice to see them do well sometimes. But from about 2007-2014, they had pretty good success against us in both football and basketball, so fans who started following college sports in that time frame never root for MSU.
