OT: Talking Cars Tuesday - July 4th Edition
Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some fuckin' muscle.
In the spirit of yesterday, what's your ONE, DEFINITIVE, AMERICAN car of choice? Do you follow Wooderson into a Chevelle SS? Do you have the Right Stuff for a Corvette? Are you a Mustang fan? Viper? New? Old? Give us a picture and a year, and let's see where the board falls when it comes to
Always been a Mustang man myself. First was a '70 Boss 302 that I eventually sold with 225,000 miles on it. The purchaser was restoring a similar Mustang and finally decided mine was in better shape than his. I never did get to see it fully restored, I'm sure it would have brought a tear to my eye though.
In all honesty, I have no clue what almost any of that is. 4:11 positrac outback, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop up Pistons? Wtf? And what the heck is a turbo-jet doing on a car?

4:11 Positrac is the gear ratio in the drive axle. Higher numbers typically = faster acceleration (and lower top speed). Positrac means it's a limited slip axle. Bored Over 30 means that the engine was "Bored Out" - it's actually got more displacement than listed (bigger = more power). 11-to-1 Pistons means he's running an 11:1 compression ratio (in general, higher = more power, to a point).
My 4-speed, dual-quad, positraction 409.
/I don't even like the Beach Boys
I mean, as an engineer not really, but from the marketing side I love it. I love that the new Boss 302 had "302" in the name. I love that the Challenger gets "392" badging.
I can quit any time.
But I'd love to drive any V8 with a stick. A 289 Cobra would be a bucket list drive.

How do you not like the Beach Boys? What kind of commie are you?
You don't know what positraction is?
Hot.
any CJ or Wrangler will do. Willy's would make it most Americanest.
6 or 8 cylinder
3-4" lift (if you go too high you may not make it under obstacles)
34" mud tires
sway bar disconnects and axle lockers
steel bumpers and slider bars
winch
no doors, no carpets, spiderwebshade top
somewhere in Colorado or Utah with camping gear, a collection of spare parts and two extra jerry cans of fuel.

It's OK as long as you don't watch movies while travelling in semi-autonomous mode.
I for one, welcome our new self-driving electric robotic overlords.

Is the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado.
I put this in the "one that got away" thread, but my dad's buddy had a low milleage 78 Eldorado, baby blue, that he was looking to sell when I was in my early teens. Damn, that car is something I have wanted since I was 14. I assume the turning radius sucks, but those were absolutely awesome vehicles.
for less than 5k.
Holy shit - 4,000 for that? I bet you could get it for 3 (I also imagine it has 350,000 miles, but I couldn't give a shit as long as it starts). Close to my parents house also...hmmm. Wife would be thrilled about this purchase!
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
If you can take a 5k hit to your savings, I say fuck it, buy your dream. Your wife will understand. And if she doesn't, chances are she won't want the car in the divorce.
tell me you're a marriage counsellor and life coach....
In fact, I'm going to look into what if any licensing requirements there are to become one.
Having communication problems in your marriage? Here's a bottle of champagne and a 1/16th of coke. You're not leaving this room until they're both gone.

Hahaha... turning radius and '78 Eldorado in the same sentence! Not to worry - SoDak has plenty of room to run around. Nice ride though and that baby blue is pretty sweet!
I drove one of those once.
It has the turning radius of the SS Nimitz.
Ha! Also, at just shy of 19 feet in length, it is about the same size as the Nimitz. Gotta go home and measure how long my garage is...
My Grandfather bought a Lincoln that was a freaking boat (not sure what year). It didn't fit in his garage, so his solution was to blow out the back of the garage from 4 feet down and extend it a couple feet. I thought that was brilliant, but then again, I was six or so at the time.

1954 Bel Air Convertible. Hinting toward the later excess of the model, but much classier IMO.

If we're counting bespoke manufacturers, I'd love to take a Drakan Spyder for a spin. I've always been a sucker for those kind of small, lightweight, road-legal cars (Lotus, Ariel, BAC, etc.).
I'm partial to the early '70s Vettes... Just a classic look.
Same here.
My personal favorite, and bucket list car, is an International Blue '68 Corvette:
The car of my boyhood dreams.
It's perfect, but my (and his) ideal is a 63 split window in red with a red interior, or a 65 with a 396, which is RARE.
Awesome. I would kill for that car in the pic.

2016 Ford GT (in blue)
One of the most beautiful cars ever, IMHO. Especially with the wimbledon white and two stripes.
I has a '55 for a few years, I think those TBirds are among the nicest looking cars made. I am also partial to the 1960's Corvettes.
The one I might actually be able to get one day: Viper
...but for me, the best car was the '65 GT-350.
Prior to that it was the Charger with the elephant engine; which is a close second.
Ones a knife, the other is a hammer.
