HAIL 2 VICTORS

I once thought the same about dying in ones sleep until I saw Season 1 Episode 9 of The Twilight Zone

Perchance to Dream

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734612/

"They say a dream takes only a second or so, and yet in that second a man can live a lifetime. He can suffer and die, and who's to say which is the greater reality: the one we know or the one in the dreams, between heaven, the sky, the earth . . . in the Twilight Zone."

I remember some of those old epidsodes being so terrifying when I watched them as a child.  I was probably too young, but the parents were upstairs watching Walter Cronkite or one of the other 4 or 5 channels, and not aware of what I was watching downstairs.  The one where the crew of some spaceship got captured by aliens who subjected them to all kinds of scary stuff gave me nightmares for years.

He dies with the distinct honor of being the centerpiece of what is likely the best film scene ever shot, the entrance to the Copacabana in Goodfellas.

Really sad that he died way too early.

If you ever get the chance to drop in on the Field of Dreams in Iowa, I recommend it. My wife is from Iowa so we used to make many uninspiring trips there. Then we stopped by Dyersville on one trip. Magical. The kids and I all pretended to be like Ray's Shoeless Joe and the other ghost players and walk into the cornfield (go when the corn is high).

So many great roles and performances. Thanks for the memories Ray!

Damn....was just watching Goodfellas this past Sunday. He always had a way of playing characters who could be both extremely calm yet maniacal and sociopathic at the same time. Such a fantastic actor. That laugh of his had so much gleeful insanity in it.

RIP, Ray. You were one of the greats. When you see Tommy again, can you remind him for all of us how funny of a guy he was?

I think Billy Batts has been tormenting Tommy over that plenty on his own ever since Tommy showed up at the pearly gates.

I mean…..if a man and his buddies beat me within an inch of my life and then finished me off with his mother’s butcher knife in the trunk of his car before burying me upstate somewhere, I’d probably be itching to make his afterlife a living hell the minute he showed up there.

The poor thing, I hit him and his uh, we hit the deer and his paw-what do you call it?

The paw. His foot.

The hoof.

The hoof got caught in the grill and I gotta hack it off.

Deniro's delivery of "the hoof" always kills me.

Oh man, that sucks. Hadn't even heard about this. His Henry Hill character is one of the all-time classics (Hill actually lived in the town I grew up in). He was in a ton of stuff but one of my favorites was his small but great role in Cop Land

Narc was a solid movie.  And for whatever reason I will always remember the line from a good movie review - which is rare - from the San Diego Reader, our local "Metro" weekly free mag. that said "set in Detroit (played by Toronto)".

Possessed perhaps the most expressive eyes in the business, with a face and presence built for Hollywood.

He was ridiculously authentic in Cop Land, Unlawful Entry and Narc, in addition to his most famous roles, and believe it or not, he made Operation Dumbo Drop and Turbulence actually watchable.

RIP, Ray. Gone too soon.

Fuck!! A year younger than me. Fuck!! He leaves behind a HOF body of work.

I'm going to go paint a picture of one dog going that way and the other dog going the other way.

The first news I saw was the The Hollywood Reporter tweeting he died in his sleep in the Dominican Republic and I had to do a double take to see what the heck I had just read. RIP.
