That's sad.  He was so good on SCTV and basically played everything straight which was a big part of his humor.

Count Floyd was so funny......

The dad from Freaks and Geeks. One thing of note, for anyone who watched that show. On the final episode, Lindsay had gotten a spot in some summer program at Michigan, which was a big deal, but in the end, she decided to follow the Grateful Dead around with her friends. Bad life decision.

Slowly (not slowly) time marches onward.  All the great ones from my college years are going away. I loved to watch SCTV along with Saturday Night Live back in the day. Loved laughing my ass off.  I knew who John Candy was before the rest of the world ever heard of him. Joe, Rick, Eugene, Andrea, Harold, Martin, Brian, Catherine. All famous today.  Brilliant Brilliant writing. We watched them at Chicago House West Quad when we weren't out at Dooleys or Ricks. So much fun. RIP Joe. *sigh*

He had bit roles in what seems like a third of the films made in the 1980s and into the early 1990s too. He was the doorman in "Who's Harry Crumb?", the border guard in "Stripes", a patient in "Innerspace" and General Raymond in "One Crazy Summer", just to name a couple roles.

He was also really, really funny. RIP.

I always put SCTV right alongside Monty Python. Flaherty was a key writer on the show too. Count Floyd's (Floyd Robertson) Monster Chiller Horror Theatre was an all timer. His Robertson character was also the co anchor, with Levy of the nightly news. I still laugh when I remember the time he showed up for the news stinking drunk and still with the Count Floyd hair. ALL his characters where fantastic.

I am forever thankful for the Ontario tv stations we picked up in the late 70s. I got to see Monty Python, SCTV, Benny Hill etc instead of the junk on local stations, except for The Ghoul of course. Still recall SCTV spoofing Fantasy Island, Ben Hur and many more. Great stuff, miss you Joe!

He played a Soviet border guard in Stripes with a cast that starred Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Warren Oates, John Candy and Sean Young. He was a kick to watch.

My best friend introduced me to SCTV when I was in the 7th grade.  Great show and Flaherty as Guy Caballero was one of my favorite characters particularly during the Towering Inferno episodes. RIP.
